This year was good. My voice proved an issue again which kind of sucked but it freed me up to help the organisers on the desk for rounds 1, 4, and 5, which I think was actually helped out as the Con grows larger and larger.
Tears of Vykyris went very well. I was unsure of the group to start but was glad to see that a combination of the players being awesome and my scenario design being supportive, things went very well. Every player had moments of shine and having a teenaged girl playing Wren was very cool. Hats off to Lucy.
Thieves in the Ninth House proved more difficult. My voice was fading and my concern rising. Eight players proved a bad combination too. We ended up wrapping the game at the two hour mark. I hope the players had an OK time but apologise that it didn't really work out.
The LARP was a better experience, though it sunk any chance of voice recovery. If this ever happens again, I would look to just run once each day and not LARP as that might be sustainable. Its just a shame that this happens on the years I put in the most effort :(
The LARP was odd having not done one for 5 years. It reminded me of all the good and not so good elements of such a large scale LARP. I enjoyed my PC and thank Sam, Scott, Ian and Sam Burke for a fun night. I particularly enjoyed the inventive solution I came up to placate my wife, Medea.
I think the LARP was well put together and flavourful. It was also well cast. However, I did feel blocked from a few plots that I expected to be involved in due to what could have been an ambitious structure. Though it seemed like an effort was made to murky up factional lines to promote multiple plots, this enouraged people to gravitate toward those they were tightest with making quite an insular experience. As a king, I had nothing to do with the Trojan War. As an Argonaut, I had nothing to offer Team Argonaut and I think every Argonaut outside of the core five was the same. Not that I blame them. They reacted as expected given a cool plan and a tight group. I also had no real way to interact with Hades. In the end I focussed on family and achieved three out of my four goals with some ingenuity and did still have a lot of fun.
The next day I won the SDC. I love my scenario, so I was pleased to bits and appreciated Sophie's comments. I do think it will by last entry for a while.
So what about 2013? Given the voice issues, I want to run Vykyris again. This fits with an idea I have to run my last 4-6 scenarios again, so that may be likely. With my plans this year to write games again for home, this may work well assuming something awesome doesn't land in my lap.
I will also focus on helping Sam get a game together for her to run, and plans are already in progress in that regard.
