I had a laser safety training session today for our Class IV laser. It's surprising to discover that different wavelengths of light are absorbed, and damage, different parts of they eye. We operate in the infrared, telecommunications wavelengths, so any eye exposure would cause damage to the retna within microseconds. With a femto-second pulse titanium-sapphire laser with a CO2 pump, even exposure to 5% reflection of this light can cause severe, permanent, and ultimately irreparable injury. Basically, if you see the light from the Ti-Sapph laser reflected off a sheet of white paper it is probably enough to blind you.

I have to start the 4-1 program application soon. Yes, even more suprises there. I need to visit the director of the relevant departments for written confirmation that I can indeed complete my intended major. There's change in the wind again. I'm trying to put a halt to a current project that's consumed a lot of my time. It's too cyclical, too uncertain, too iterative and not enough interactive. I'm interested in trends not so much specific details.

Will try to restrict my posting in the future and focus my writing powers on my ongoing projects. Posts will now be less insightful, most likely shorter, and more routine. I have to conserve the music inside me to write that great opera instead of many ballads.

'Step outside yourself,' I said. He did but couldn't get back in.
