After talking to my Dad on the phone two things seemed to stand out in my mind:

1. There is a major transfer of wealth going on in the US as houses are foreclosed upon and resold, or not resold, by the banks to anyone other than their original owners, at a large discount. A price that perhaps some of their original owners could even afford to pay were they given the option. If I had the cash I'd buy up some houses in the US, once the big guys are done snapping them up the price should start going up pretty quick.
It seems like a definate move away from Entreprenuerial capitalism, which (I think) is reliant on a broad section of the population having access to capital. I wonder if the Bush administration saw this coming when they were talking about encouraging everyone to buy a home, even when it was obvious that many people couldn't really afford it. Perhaps in some ways the Chinese and American systems are not so different. Let the little guys build wealth and value, than steal it from them and call the irrisponsible, or criminals, or just insult their mothers.

2. My Dad said that urban farming is a growing trend in Detroit. People are tearing down whole blocks and turning them into farms. It's like a contemporary Trantor, I don't think they had a Hari Seldon though, so there may not be any pyschohistorians controlling people's emotions.
