Comedy signwriting
As I made my way down Leith Walk to the Bethany Bookshop on 12th July, 2022, this billboard advertising forthcoming events at the Playhouse Theatre caught my eye. Does anything about it strike you as being not-quite-right?
I had to check a couple of on-line dictionaries to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me, but, sure enough, the plural of 'comedy' is 'comedies', not 'comedys'. Sign-writers have a quite remarkable aptitude for getting basic spelling wrong, as well as almost always omitting apostrophes or placing them where they shouldn't be. If you can't spell or use punctuation correctly, why on earth would you think signwriting was just the job for you?
