Where does the thing where a rock band has an "old recording" style thing play over part of their song come from? Cake does it with Thrills, Rancid does it with Crane Fist, Death Cab for Cutie does it in a song that I don't remember the title. When did this thing start out? Is there some sort of original source they're all referencing? If anybody has any idea (or more songs in this line), I'd be glad to repay you with kind thoughts and smiles.
