College Life

Hooray for Oberlin! I'm so glad I made it to the reunion. I think I'd mostly let my Oberlin days and friends and education fade into distant memory, so it's great to have that part of my life brought to the fore again. Especially now that time and distance let me appreciate my Obie days even more. I don't know how long it will last (these things are usually embarrassingly fleeting) but I think I came home with a renewed drive to do good in the world, to know and keep in touch with good, intelligent, curious people - people with interests beyond their own selves and their own lives.

Campus is just the same as I remember, and it's nice of them to hold reunions at the most gorgeous time of year. Makes it easier for memories of the biting Ohio winters to fade into the background.

None of the buildings have changed much. I think I even recognized some bathroom graffiti. They've built some new 'village housing' student apartments, which I like but Colin thinks they look too much like pre-fab suburban development houses. And the first level of the library has been renovated, but the essential character of the building hasn't changed a bit.

One theme of the weekend was 'this building smells exactly the same!' I hadn't realized how much each building on campus has its own particular smell (especially the dorms), but every one smells familiar the minute you walk in. Colin and I tried to visit all our old haunts, to say hello to our dorm rooms and classrooms and lounges. It was especially cool to go back to College Lanes and bowl with some old teammates. Needless to say, College Lanes smells the same as ever. It was definitely a weekend of intense nostalgia. It's always great to see old friends and familiar faces.

Looking forward to my 10-year reunion. Hope it gets here soon!
