Demons, episode four

Whisper it, children, but I actually quite enjoyed this week's Demons.

Now I don't want to put the dampeners on this positive start, but I should point out I'd taken the precaution of supping a glass of wine before hand, and another during. I'm not saying an alcoholic haze made all the difference, but it may have helped.

Yes, there were still plot holes a-plenty (why must heroes always pose and say 'witty' things before shooting someone, thus giving the Bad Guys time to bop them on the head and get away?); still that frustrating flatness permeating the whole thing; and Luke is as wooden as a two foot stake.

But the vampires were quite stylish; Ruby wasn't nearly so annoying; the dynamic between the four main protagonists is actually quite interesting (honestly, the fanfics wouldn't be really so mad to pair up Luke and Mina or Rupert and Ruby) and has bags of potential; and there were some things that actually made me laugh when they were supposed to.

I know! I couldn't quite believe it either. Not mocking laughter at all. Rupert singing along to Johnny Cash and Luke's teenage disgust was very believable; Zippy, the Bad Guy's stupid henchman, with his removable head was (to me at least) rather an original idea and funny instead of gruesome.

Mina's character motivation was all over the shop, but she made quite a scary transition into full vampire-iness. Could have done with a little more of Rupert's suspicions and determination to smite her too if necessary; that was rather too underplayed for my money. But yeah, there were some good things - and not just Rupert's three piece suit, for a change.

Alas, it's still haemorrhaging viewers and has dropped below 4m in the overnights now, so I think it's all too late...
