Personality: Irisviel prizes life tremendously. Unlike her family, who has pined after the Grail for so long that they don’t even have a WISH to be granted anymore, since their wish IS to obtain the Grail and nothing more, Irisviel has her own desires despite being a homunculus in canon. She claims to hold the same wish as her husband Kiritsugu: she wish for what he wishes, to save people. That, however, is one thing that she may be deluding herself with; she does not fully understand Kiritsugu’s wish, but appropriated his wishes as her own out of her absolute love and trust for him. This does still manage to reflect her true wish, however, which is the safety and well-being of the husband and daughter she loves so dearly. She takes a huge amount of pride in being able to feel, to make her own decisions, and to being a mother, which gave her depth and personality that a doll would indeed never possess. She may appear innocent, easygoing and carefree, but she also has a very deep understanding of others - you almost have to, if Kiritsugu and Saber are the kind of people that you deal with daily. She may feel upset sometimes that Kiritsugu isn’t telling her things, but she is still fully aware that he has led an extremely difficult life, made decisions so selfless but hurt so much, and would seem so inhuman to an onlooker when his cause is far nobler that she eventually realized, with Hisui Maiya’s help, that what he hides does not matter. As long as she kept on loving him and supporting him with all that she can, these smaller insecurities are things that she does not need to concern herself with.
…And in that regard, despite how utterly different Saber and Kiritsugu both act, the underlying cause for their actions is one and the same, which is also the reason why she manages to get along with both so marvelously. She can respect people’s boundaries, but also offer them ease in such subtle manners that even the stereotypical silent, brooding types won’t be able to turn her away for long. When Saber berated herself on how she may be inadequate as a Servant because Kiritsugu never spoke to her, it was Irisviel who quietened her worries by pointing out the factual reasons, and reassured the King of Knights that Kiritsugu held his tongue for other reasons. When Kiritsugu doubted himself and declared himself unworthy when he held Ilyasviel, their daughter, for the first time, Irisviel was the one that soothed him, telling him that it was okay, the small girl will understand the choices that her father made, and that Kiritsugu should stick out his chest with pride like a normal father would.
Irisviel, aside from being able to understand others and help them re-strengthen their resolve, is also capable of doing that to herself. She grew confused and even jealous at Hisau Maiya’s presence, the gunwoman who is Kiritsugu’s personal assistant on the fields. She was the one that her husband has personally trained to be colder than steel, and while she understands that Maiya can help Kiritsugu, she still cannot help but feel uncomfortable around the other woman, for she knows that while she is familiar with the warm, fatherly side of her husband, she is not acquainted with the Magus Killer side of him. Maiya, however, would know that side very well. Ultimately, she finally realizes, as both women put forward their lives and gave their all to fight Kotomine Kirei, the most dangerous individual already labeled by Kiritsugu, when he showed up from nowhere and intruded on Einzbern territory, that there was no need to worry, be concerned, or even feel jealousy. Their purposes were the same: they were just two women who cared deeply for the man named Kiritsugu Emiya. Which side they saw of him did not matter, regardless of how nice it would be to know - they trust him in his decisions and will abide by his requests. Kiritsugu would reason and act with their best interests and the highest odds of survival in mind, so they will do their best to protect him too. After that encounter, despite the fact that both women barely made it out alive, Irisviel now had Maiya as a trusted ally and fellow friend. After all, it’s only natural that one who can help others is capable of helping oneself.
The cause for her strong resolved in life may be somewhat tied to the fact that despite everything that’s happening now, once the war ends and the Grail fully forms, her consciousness would merge with it, and Irisviel von Einzbern, as an individual, would cease to exist. This unification may as well be death, but this is something that she has accepted long ago. She was born for this, after all, and even if she has acquired a life of her own and desires of her own, this fact is still one that she will never turn her back to. Which is why to her, every conscious moment is that much more important, every little thing of life can be that much more enjoyable, every embrace to her husband and daughter that much more loving, and every instance beside Saber to aid Kiritsugu in assisting them to attaining the Grail, that much more crucial. With her life timed from the moment she was created, insecurities and fear should be dealt with accordingly so she can move on and enjoy what she has with the ones she care about - it may be a notable source of her strength, the reason why her will is so strong.
Still, setting aside her solid resolve and mature understanding, Irisviel also possesses a penchant for jokes and mischief. It’s most notable when she is in the company of her lord knight Saber: she respects the Servant’s boundaries as King and Knight, but as a woman and Saber’s partner, she will joke about how handsome Saber is while hinting that she would like very much to take Saber onto a clothing shopping spree. She also canonly cracks about how great Saber’s driving skills are, and were they to buy a tank from the black market, maybe Saber will be able to win just by driving that thing around. She is also prone to making small but insightful comments to cheer her husband up before the start of the war, though as deeper and more involved the Grail War became, the lesser there was of chances for her to show her more innocent and carefree side, which shines through most when she has an idle moment to enjoy with Saber. She had them with Kiritsugu, but these moments with her husband were gone altogether once they arrived in Fuyuki. He would become too busy scheming to kill all the other Masters, which she cannot fault him for.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strength
Mild-mannered and reasonable, Iri is a good mediating force for conflicts between people that she cares about. Firm and resolute, she’s a woman who knows what she wants and will take the steps necessary to get it, and kind and patient, she’s a soft and trust-inspiring presence that will be able to soothe those around her.
Weakness
She fears tremendously for her family. She does fully trust Kiritsugu to make decisions that can protect them, but her attachment to her husband and daughter can definitely be an easy way to get to her. Harming them can destabilize her, and she will feel envious if others get too close to Kiri and Ilya. She’s also somewhat codependent; she would blindly follow whatever that Kiri decides on with little to no second thought.
