On shaving

Awhile back I needed a new razor so I bought one of those Gillette Fusion razors. It's a great shave. Much better than any previous razor I had used. I had tried their three blade version and it was crap so I had been using the two blade. The Fusion was much better than that. So, I was happy with it.

And then I went to buy more cartridges and they promptly put my wallet in a headlock and started giving it noogies.

Now, I only shave with a razor about three times a week. The other days I use an electric shaver. (Because I'm lazy and I have a thin beard so I can get away with it.) If you figure on getting about eight good shaves out of a cartridge then I need 20 cartridges per year.

For a Fusion, the razor costs $9.99 and the cartridges are $13.29 for 4.
Total cost for one year of Gillette Fusion shaving: $76.44.

So I did some research, changed course and bought a safety razor. New manufacture but an exact copy of 1930ish design. The shave is not quite as good as the Fusion, but better than either of Gillette's earlier two or three blade models. And, of course, there's a learning curve. You WILL cut yourself when you're just starting out with one of these.

It's made out of hefty pieces of stainless steel so the cost came to $29.99. The blades, however, are $5.99 for 10. And those are the stainless steel, platinum coated blades. You can get cheaper.

Total cost for a year of old-school 'safety' shaving: $41.97

And the savings just get more dramatic next year because this razor will last me forever.
Next purchase- a badger hair shaving brush!
