I’ve had a good few critiques come back to me, and I’ve made notes of the general issues with the story. I should be able to make alterations and then ship the boy out into the choppy sea of the short fiction markets.
One odd thing that I noticed this time around, was that in the first few days of the critiquing cycle, the crit’s were generally positive and seemed to understand the story. Now, as the last day of having the story available for critique comes about, the critiques generally seem to be negative and totally seem to hate the story for reasons that other people have praised it. In many ways, I find that a relief. I’d hate to think that I wrote things that everybody likes. Still, many critiques have pointed to several areas that could be clarified, so I’ll be sorting that out.
In many ways, I’m glad I resisted using the critiquing process for so long. I think that as a younger writer, I might have taken criticism too much to heart and thrown away a lot of good stuff.
Tim Pratt’s Little Gods arrived in the post today. So I’ll be reading through that as soon as I’ve finished Non-Stop by Brian Aldiss. I have a real soft spot for a good generation ship tale, and Aldiss knows how to write.
Now I need to go and think up a story to write next in my little jotter.
Take it easy
