I Need to Be Committeed!
My advisor tossed off a query today about some paperwork regarding my Admission to Candidacy (ATC) examination (essentially, my thesis project proposal). I checked it, and discovered that the deadline for submission was yesterday. Yipes! I had been putting this off because I had wanted to have some data to present at the examination, and that has been slow in coming (and I have been distracted by illness, coursework, the conference, and TA duties, making it even slower in coming). As it happens, the data is not essential to have ready, and I should have data within a month or less anyway, so I have no legitimate excuse for not pressing ahead and scheduling things.
The other thing that will be sorted out by this paper is the membership of my committee. I require only my advisor (who, obviously, need not be signed up) and two others. I got one today: I went to his office and reminded him that my advisor had earlier explored the possibility of his being on my committee, and said that I would love to have him. He said that he would love to serve. It was a touching and strange experience, formal and comforting at the same time. I am happy for it. Unfortunately, the other person that I wanted on my committee was on the telephone before I had an afternoon appointment, and had left by the time that the appointment was over, so I will need to try him again tomorrow. Then I will be committeed!
