2. More of the same
Subject: Truth and Beauty... (and RussianFinance) - Betrayal
T&B has just been upstaged by Vladimir Putin - we are, of course, deeply
honoured.
As we were finalizing the current desk-note - after weeks of denial,
finally conceding what some of our correspondents had been insisting, i.e.
that the Georgian imbroglio was indeed a US electoral ploy, Vladimir
Vladimirovich comes on CNN
http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2008/08/28/chance.russia.putin.intv.preview.cnnto say something quite similar . And he says it far better than we could
have.
That said, our interpretation of events is slightly different - while we
agree that this was clearly engineered to support the McCain campaign, we
see little evidence that it represented official US policy - rather, we
believe that rogue factions in Washington were responsible. Perhaps we are
both wrong - but then one must suggest some other coherent explanation for
a series of events which would otherwise suggest madness.
We are impressed by the fairness and balance of the Western Media; CNN
gave a chance to explain their positions to both Saakashvili (for a full
45 minutes) and to Putin (for a bit less than 3 minutes). The FT wrote it
up this morning, with a paper which hardly allowed a single affirmation by
the Russian President without throwing in a gaggle of “experts” to refute
his statements. Funny thing - they never seem to do that for Saakashvili…
In fact, those same wonderful folk who brought you the WMD dossier,
Operation Enduring Freedom, and all the horrors of Guantanamo - are now
deftly chaperoning Georgia onto the World Stage - typically, the blushing
bride will be left to eek out a living as a charwoman, just as soon as she
exhausts her usefulness.
On a more personal note, we have recently been inundated with mail, and
must apologize for have been physically unable to reply to everyone kind
enough to share their views with us - we will continue to work through the
backload, and are sincerely grateful for your interests and encouragement.
Most amazingly, having fully expected to be pilloried, we find our mail
(including that coming from the US) running 95% in support of our
positions. People are apparently tired of being spun, and of being lied
to, by that same Establishment which sold the Iraqi invasion, NATO
expansion, and the Orwellian corruption of the political lexicon: The
Economist, the BBC, the WSJ, the “Free and Fair” Fox Network.
We are glad
to provide an alternative.
These are fascinating times in which we live - history is being made.
Alas, future generations may look back and wonder - as we do when we
remember the events of August 1914 - how could they have been so insane,
so irresponsible, so utterly self-destructive?
Or, perhaps the analogy is a bridge too far. There is a lot of angry
rhetoric, but quite fortunately, far more bread than meat. There has been
the utterly amateurish attempts at diplomacy by the irrepressible French
Minister Bernard Kouchner, an outsider untrained in diplomacy (note that,
after talking about “European sanctions” in the very next breath, he noted
that France was not asking for sanctions) but this is empty chatter.
Europe is heading into recession, and Russia is the only substantial
growth market on the continent. Beyond that, we hardly need to remind our
readers that Europe depends upon Russia for some 40% of its energy. Russia
has made it clear that they intended to remain a reliable energy supplier,
but implicitly, if the Europeans were to try to impose sanctions, they can
only expect sanctions in return. Not a happy outcome for either side.
As far as the US goes, while the American consumer has been valiantly
supporting the global economy, Russia has been saving. As a result, their
government now holds nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in US mortgage
agency bonds - bonds which, presumably, the US would not like to see back
in the market at the present time. Russia has announced sharp cutbacks in
its imports of US poultry and pork - products where she is increasingly
self-sufficient. All of this is going to prove painful in some key US
agricultural states. Perhaps it is now time to cool the rhetoric and find
some common ground. It is late - but not quite too late.
As always, our readers are welcome to forward our notes to any interested
parties.
Happy trading - and, as Bernie always says, “Be Lucky”…

4. а переключившись на CNN, обнаружил вице-президентессу Маккейна. Кто это? Что это? Кто-нибудь знает? “I am just like you, a housewife from Alaska” Она правда housewife from Alaska? Первое впечатление: акцент, улыбка, прическа и бессодержательный скрипт epitomizes almost everything one detests about America
