Ground lines here cost so much in taxes and they are littered - positively littered - with sales calls, at all hours, constantly ringing. It's horrible. At least with my cell phone I know it's only my friends calling. :)

I like football well enough...the Rose Bowl is a college championship game. This year it was USC (University of Southern California) vs. Texas...the game is played in Southern California. My sister goes to law school there...plus, living here, we were all rooting for California by default. There's a little bit of politcal animosity for Texas from much of California along the conservative vs. liberal lines, in a general sense.

It IS a waste of money. Things like heifer.org are such much more worthwhile gifts. I usually end up giving it away to the Goodwill (charity) or a Veteran's association (since the US tends to not take the greatest care of its veterans after they've served their military purpose). Occasionally I'll sell stuff on ebay but then I usually feel guilty and don't want to hassle with the post office anyway. It DOES weigh one down...
