Adobe PS - Loading gradient files (*.grd) into PS

Oct 25, 2005 23:43

Quick'n'dirty tutorial:

Loading a gradient ( *.grd ) file to Adobe is easy. Depending on what you downloaded, your new gradient set will either come as ‘name’.grd or as a zip file containing ‘name.grd’. If the latter is the case, you’ll obviously need to unzip the gradient set before you can use it.

You have two options on where to store gradients other people have made. Most of us will want to store them in the default Adobe PS directory, which is located at:

English OS: C:\Program Files\Adobe Photoshop\Presets\Gradients

Note: if you downloaded a lot of gradients from the same maker, you might want to create a folder for them in Presets/Gradients/makernamehere and put all the gradients from that maker in there. It keeps things tidy.

You can also create a folder somewhere in My Documents and store all your downloaded gradients there. I’ve never had a problem with the program not loading files that weren’t stored in the default directory, but if
this last location gives you trouble, use the default directory.

Grab your new gradient file and either copy and paste, or drag it to the location of your choice.

Here’s where you’ll load the gradient:

1. Select the gradient tool on your toolbar thinger.

2. Next to the dropdown menu, there is a little arrow. Click that.

3. Another arrow, this time on the dropdown menu itself.

4. ‘Load Gradients...’. Usually, this will open the default directory. If it doesn’t, just point your ‘Open’
window to where you stored your gradients.

That’s it!
