carolina: 86
duke: 72
despite a nearly broken nose in the last few seconds of the game (gerald henderson, i hate you), tyler hansbrough managed to score more points (26) and take more rebounds (17) than any other player of tonight's glorious and B-E-A-utiful game.
and then he asked to go out and finish.
i love and adore this season's team.
i decided to do a little research on the history of the rivalry (there's a whole wikipedia page devoted to it) and found these interesting tidbits:
-Carolina leads the all-time head-to-head series with Duke:
Carolina: 127 Duke: 96.
-Sports Illustrated named the Carolina v. Duke rivalry the number 1 hottest rivalry in college sports and the number 2 hottest rivalry overall.
-Carolina has won 4 NCAA Championships. Duke has won 3. Carolina was also named national champions in 1924 for their undefeated season.
-Carolina has played in an NCAA-record 16 final fours. Duke? 14.
-The March 4th, 2006 game (carolina v Duke at Cameron Indoor Statdium)was the most watched college basketball game in history. (Carolina: 83. Duke: 76.)
Need I remind you of the glory of that game?
it's a good time to be a carolina fan.
edit (4/5) 5:00pm:
as it turns out, tyler's nose is broken.
dear gerald henderson: go to hell
and what's with coach k saying tyler shouldn't have even been in the game that late? he said that because it was basically over in terms of points that roy should've taken tyler out. why? so he wouldn't keep getting beat up on? and oh wait... coach k: didn't YOU still have almost all of your starters still in? if it was over, why were they there? and you know the only reason paulus was gone is because he fouled out. AND... if you had been paying attention, coach k, you would've seen that mike copeland was ready to come in for tyler. it's not tyler's fault that you guys couldn't rebound of bobby's free throw.
henderson followed through with his shoulder. if his arm was just falling, that kind of follow through wouldn't have happened. the force of his arm just "falling" wouldn't have caused tyler's nose to break.
here's a hint: when you're coming down from an attempted rebound, keep your arms up so the refs know you're not fouling anybody. fouling tyler hansbrough with 14 seconds left when you're down by 12? bad idea.
after all this, gerald henderson called tyler "kid." wait wait wait... did you get rookie of the year last year? hm. no. are you a sophomore? NO. don't be so disrespectful. if you want people to honestly believeyou didn't mean it, take the high road and apologize. freshman punk.
seriously duke, you shouldn't resort to cheap shots on our best player. it's not classy and it makes you look like a desperate team and horrible losers.
i fucking love carolina.
