-Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann *****
------------------------------------------------
I chose Let the Great World Spin primarily based on the cover art and reviews, and I was not disappointed. The book revolves around a handful of different characters whose lives are intertwined, centered on the events of August 7, 1974 when Philippe Petit walked on a high-wire between the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. All of the characters are interesting and I love the way that they look at the city, and life in general, from completely different angles. It's one of my favorite books that I've read in a long time.
While reading, I marked pages that had my favorite quotes. Here are a few of them:
"It struck me that distant cities are designed precisely so you can know where you came from. We bring home with us when we leave. Sometimes it becomes more acute for the fact of having left."
"People are good or half good or a quarter good, and it changes all the time - but even on the best day nobody's perfect."
"Some people think love is the end of the road, and if you're lucky enough to find it, you stay there. Other people say it just becomes a cliff you drive off, but most people who've been around awhile know it's just a thing that changes day by day, and depending on how much you fight for it, you get it, or you hold on to it, or you lose it, but sometimes it's never even there in the first place."
"She looked at me blankly and then an understanding traveled across her eyes. People think they know the mystery of living in your skin. They don't. There's no one knows except the person who carts it around in her own self."
"We stumble on... bring a little noise into the silence, find in others the ongoing of ourselves. It is almost enough... The world spins. We stumble on. It is enough."
