CHICKENS!!!!! I am so excited!! When we first moved to the farm 24 years ago I started raising fowl of all kinds. Ducks, chickens, guinea hens, pheasant and turkeys, you name it, we raised it and yes, ate it as well. A few years ago, 4 or 5, I just stopped. No one wanted to take on the work and I was busy building my practice. I bought an ( Read more... )

let me warn you about roosters. When they first find their voice, they'll go from 4am to midnight. And it's not cute and rustic :) my neighbors are raising chickens, and I haven't slept in days! that being said, they're fun to have around.

Don't I know it but I think I am in luck... gracehatter October 9 2007, 00:36:06 UTC
There is one full grown rooster and two very young ones, less than 12 weeks...they will be on my table in short order I have no doubt. One rooster can handle 13 hens with no problem at all come springtime.

respond...I was on hiatus from my computer for quite a while but I'm back now. The chickens are doing fine! I actually bought 30 baby chicks 2 weeks ago (1/2 layers, 1/2 meat chickens) and have 24 eggs in my hatcher...chickens are at their prettiest when they are young and are also fun then...once they get older...not so much.

That's so cool that you can raise your own. I imagine the baby chicks are cute but they peep a lot, don't they? we had one in our house once as a pet (I don't remember how or why we ended up with one) but dad made us give it back since he didn't like the noise.

Oh they are little chirpers but what is interesting is that if you have a group the peeping is like a quiet hum but one alone will peep loudly and non-stop, they do not like to be alone! On another note I was wondering if you have any news on Patty from Ontario (curious anyone)? I lost her other contacts ..I think it was myspace or facebook...do you know how to contact her or do you know how she is doing? I have an email but got no response a month or so ago and don't want to be pesky but I have been thinking of her.
