Part quatre - Why Lucifer doesn't like crowds.

Feb 07, 2011 15:23

Adam tried to force himself to go on, but everything just seemed to stay the same. He realized that he could walk forever, but Lucifer could just keep him in this exact same spot if thats where he wanted Adam to stay. Adam shut his eyes against the confusion, pressing his palm up against his forehead as he tried to think. Someone messing with his mind this was was just about the last thing that he needed right now. Angels didn't play fair, that was for sure. But then again, he supposed that Lucifer wouldn't. After all, if the other Angels got a hold of Adam, and somehow convinced him, it was Lucifer who would probably end up dead.

It was no wonder that Lucifer had been the first one there to greet him after he came back. As long as Adams brothers kept saying no, and Adam was kept out of the picture altogether, Lucifer was pretty much free to do whatever it was that he wanted. "Make it stop" he moans in agony, his mind being pushed to its very limits. "Please stop"

Reality returned to normal, he was standing on the side walk half a block from his old home. Lucifer stood on the front porch, leaning against the wall, arms crossed and watching Adam idly, curious as to what he'd do after that little display. He didn't know whether he needed to show Adam further lessons or not, but like it or not, Lucifer's plans for Adam were much less, end of the world. Which was saying something considering what he wanted to -do- with the species of humanity. He spoke again, still sounding like he was right next to Adam but he wasn't..."You had to understand what 'protecting' yourself from Angels means. It's suicide."

Adam stood still for a long time, looking around as everything came back as what it should have been. He looked around the street, his childhood home, suddenly not sure if any of it was even real. He wasn't sure that he wanted to stick around Lucifer, but he wasn't sure anymore that going out on his own was such a good idea anymore either.

Turning around, Adam makes his way back to his house, or at any rate, the house that had once been his. He stops in the yard, looking up at Lucifer as he stood on the porch. "What the hell do you care if its suicide or not?" Adam demands, his eyes hidden below a mask of distrust.

"Because you have Heaven under your skin, and I can't go there anymore." He stated simply, like a knee jerk reaction, reflex. Lucifer saw the world through selfish lenses and frankly it was easier that way. He didn't have to justify anything to anyone beyond 'I wanted to'...it didn't make him a good being, but it worked out alright far as he was concerned.

The Devil pushed off the wall of the house and pulled the front door open, gesturing inside. "Before the woman next door decides to peek out her windows and call the police." He didn't push her away from her duties, mainly because the more power he used the more attention he drew himself, and fighting when he already had to keep his power shunted off into healing his own vessel so it didn't fall apart around him wouldn't be too difficult, unless they showed up with...one of his Brothers.

Adam looked up at the house with dread. It was the last place in the world that he wanted to be right now. All it was now was everything that he couldn't have. "I'm not going back in there. I don't care if they call the police." He didn't care if it was where Lucifer wanted him to go right now either. He felt like he might lose his mind if he had to stay in that house for another minute. He shakes his head, taking a step back, away from the door, rather than moving towards it. If he was going back inside that house, it was not going to be by choice, that was for damn sure.

"I don't want to be here anymore." Not that he had any idea where else he could go, but a million miles away from here didn't seem like far enough anymore.

Lucifer sighed and moved from the wall, catching Adam by the arm easily and took them further south, somewhere slightly warmer. Even if the warmth didn't take much of the edge off of the chill that Lucifer lived in, it was a far cry better for Adam...who was human and had no coat. "Not quite a million miles, but will it due?"

He didn't offer what might give him some closure just yet, wanting him slightly calmer before that happened. It would involve going back to the roadhouse and waiting for his brother to show up, Lucifer had heard that phone call and been quite amused with the way things had been going...but if Sam had been at Adam's house, then the elder brother probably had as well. He'd know how Adam had died.

"Yeah... yeah it'll do." Looking around, Adam didn't know where he was, but it wasn't Windom, it was much too warm to be Windom, and right now, that was good. Letting out a shaky breath, he closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm the ...chaos that was rampaging through his mind. "Thank you." He finally manages, giving Lucifer a half hearted smile that came nowhere near reaching his eyes.

He held on to Lucifer's arm, keeping himself upright and steady, somewhat glad to have Lucifer so close. He was still angry, though more so upset at the moment. If he wasn't careful, the rage was sure to grow as time went on. But on the other hand, having someone with him, even if he couldn't be one hundred percent sure where exactly that other person stood with regards to everything, it was still better than being alone. At least it seemed that way right now. Being with Lucifer was more likely than not going to turn out to be a huge mistake, but he didn't exactly have a whole lot of choice in the matter, even if he didn't really want Lucifer around. Right now it was a bit of both wanting him and not, he just wasn't sure which he was feeling more of.

Lucifer shrugged the thanks off, though he might have smiled a little, it was gone quickly enough that he seemed to just be his usual passive self. He looked down at Adam holding onto his arm, a strange look crossing over his face. It made him feel useful, which was a reminder of a very old sensation...he hadn't been useful in a very long time.

Lucifer was always alone, or he had been...he may have been the only angel for miles around, but he felt less so in Adam's company. Similar things had happened to them both, minor differences for race and life span...pithy things really. "You need to eat, sometime you know." Part of the reason that the changing reality had effected him so could have been lack of food.

Thinking about it for a moment, Adam eventually nodded his head with a slight shrug. "Yeah I guess so. I haven't eaten in... well who knows." With everything going on, Adam really hadn't had much time to think about much of anything, never... mind food. But as time went on, he realized that he was starving. He had been for a while probably, and he wasn't going to be able to stay on his feet much longer if he didn't eat something. He was already unsteady enough as it was.

"Maybe we could get some breakfast or something?" Adam didn't really feel like eating, but he didn't want to end up passing out either. He didn't know if Angels had to eat, but he figured probably not.

"You haven't eaten since you woke up in a field." Lucifer easily reassured the human. Like it was almost second nature. He was quiet as he walked around the other human beings and they didn't even really seem to notice him. He didn't know what humans ate for breakfast, though it wouldn't be hard to think up should he try...but he might have a slightly better idea. "No more Grace today I think you might've had enough? What would you like, we'll figure out where it's at."

Adam stuck close to Lucifer as they moved through the crowed, amazed and resentful of the fact that in the matter of a day, his entire life had been shattered into a million pieces, and yet the rest of the world seemed to just carry on as though nothing had even happened. It didn't seem fair to him, that was for sure. "I don't know. Maybe some eggs, or some bacon or something. Just food is fine." He wasn't sure if he was even going to be able to eat at all, or how he was going to be able to eat, but he might as well try. Anything he was able to get into his system at this point would be good. Maybe then he wouldn't feel so tired and worn out. But then again, that probably wasn't the diner. "There's probably a diner or something close by. There usually are." He suggests. Lucifer didn't seem all that sure where he was going or what he was doing. It struck Adam as funny, since Lucifer had been so self-assured up until now. But he appreciated the effort. Lucifer didn't have to care in the least. But at least he seemed to be trying.

He'd be amazed how little the world outside of his small group of friends and his small family had even been effected by his death. Lucifer thought it showed how there were too many human beings and they needed to be thinned and they cared so little for one another, but he doubted that Adam would see it that way. The Devil nodded. He didn't like being so close to all of these people, in cities made by man. He preferred the sky, the trees. Windom had been a small enough town that there was still so much Sky left.

After walking for a while, they finally ended up finding a small diner, and Lucifer actually sighed once they got out of the press of people and into the much less crowded diner and sat down. He looked much less at ease than usual. Considering he was about as close to a large smiting as he'd been in a while and had to struggle to maintain his temper and his power? The waitress came by and dropped off menu's, waters, and silverware...Lucifer wrapped his hand around the glass and it started to cool...more ice crystals forming in it as he watched.

Adam flipped through the menu absently, watching the ice form in Lucifer's glass. It was fascinating, but something was definitely off. Up until now, Lucifer had seemed calm and collected, but not anymore. Adam could see what looked a lot like rage boiling just underneath the surface; and it made him nervous, not only for himself, but for a whole lot of the people in the city surrounding them. "Lucifer, what's wrong?" Adam didn't bother beating around the bush, asking if something was wrong, but got right to the point instead. He knew that it was.

Getting right to the point was the only way to work with Lucifer besides that. Just being around him for the short period of time that he had been, Adam had learned that much already. That, and asking him now might just save a lot of pain and a lot of lives a bit later on. He had a feeling that he hadn't seen the full extent of Lucifer's powers to date, but he doubted that he wanted to either.

He blinked a few times and looked at Adam, the ice crystals melted and he sighed slightly. "I don't...have the best control over my temper all the time. You may have noticed yesterday." He trailed his eyes to where the marks from Lucifer's hand pressing down on his shoulder still marred Adam's pretty white flesh. He didn't say anymore, just looked out the window and gestured with his chin at the people walking by. "They don't know what gifts they've been given...what they mar with their worship of themselves. They don't even believe..." His jaw tightened and he made a fist tight enough his knuckles went white.

"Yeah I remember very well." Adam glances down at Lucifer's fist, wondering what kind of pressure it took to make his knuckles white like that. Probably enough to crush a few bones. Adam was still aware of the bruises on his body, and the ...ache every time he shifted his arm. And he doubted that those were a result of even a fraction of Lucifer's power. If Lucifer was going to lose it, Adam didn't want them do be around other people when he did.

"We can leave you know. If you don't want to be here." Uncertainly, Adam reaches out, placing a hand over Lucifer's fist. With regards to people, Adam couldn't really say much. He couldn't exactly blame them for not believing. In fact, until very, very recently, he had been one of them. When you couldn't see, it was hard to understand. In fact, it was pretty hard to grasp even when it was sitting right in front of you.

"You need to eat, Adam. I'll be fine. We'll leave afterward. I will calm down." He loosened his hand from it's fist, laying it flat under Adam's, watching Adam's hand move as he moved his hand. He swallowed once, nodding more to himself than to anyone else. He eventually flipped his hand over and curled the very tips of his fingers up so that they brushed gently along the inside of Adam's wrist, which Lucifer focused nearly exclusively on when the waitress came to take their order. Lucifer barely paid the woman any mind. She was meaningless, walking abortion...Adam was warm. He could feel the woman's forced ignoring of their hands touching. He felt like turning her brain into mush. A slight tension in Lucifer's shoulders and the way he kept glancing down at her pad and pen as she waited for their orders...Lucifer knew he read 'get her away or I will' very clearly.

Adam was very aware of Lucifer's fingers stroking the inside of his wrist, and he was also all to aware of the disapproving look that the waitress was giving them. He saw Lucifer tense up, and was glad that he hadn't caught sight of her face yet, though he probably knew exactly what she was thinking anyway. "Yeah, um, I'll just have some scrambled eggs, side of bacon, and some toast." Glancing quickly at Lucifer, he flicks his eyes back to the waitress. "Nothing for him. Thanks." He dismisses her quickly, giving her a disapproving look of his own, relieved when she walked away. He didn't like the look that she had given him, but he didn't want to see her killed over it either. Something he was sure that Lucifer would have no qualms in doing. She might have been ignorant, but she hardly deserved to die over it. He just hoped for her sake that she knocked off the dirty looks by the time she came back, or he didn't think there was going to be much he could do for her.

"Thank you. You just saved her life..." Was all he said about the matter, still tracing the veins on the underside of Adam's wrist idly. Lucifer definitely was not a 'people' angel. Nor was he looking like he was likely to become one in Adam's lifetime. He also was partially debating not letting Adam use the hand that Lucifer was entertaining himself with while he ate. The Devil didn't want Adam to move his hand...it was perfectly fine where it was, no matter that it would make eating slightly awkward for the human. He was mildly curious as to why Adam thought the woman deserved to live, but it didn't seem to be polite conversation while they waited for his food. Perhaps he would ask later. He was content with their silence for now.

Adam nods his head slowly, but says nothing more. He had figured about as much, and so he didn't want to linger on the topic for very long, just in case Lucifer changed his mind. He was apt to do that at any point. It was hard not lingering... on it, since it was all he could really think about. He didn't doubt the fact that Lucifer might have killed their waitress, and that weighed heavily on him. He didn't know if he was going to be able to curve Lucifer's anger, or get people out of the way fast enough everytime that someone did something to irritate the Angel. He could certainly try. But it begged the question, that if Adam kept interfering, how long was his own life going to last? Either way, Adam was just glad that their waitress was alright, for now at least.

"I doubt that you will do anything to incite my rage enough that I will actually go through with my fit of temper." He smirked a little, the human's mouth would get him into trouble no doubt, but Lucifer wasn't going to kill him for it. That would take away something much too valuable for both bargaining and company. Lucifer enjoyed Adam's company...best not to dwell on that little bit of knowledge...because angels and crises like that? Not a good mix. Angel's weren't made to 'question' their beliefs, whatever they happened to be, they were usually pretty 'unchanging' and it was a big deal when they did. So Lucifer brushed that aside and paid it little mind.

"Thank you for not killing her." As much as he knew that he shouldn't dwell on it too much, Adam had to say it. He definitely didn't particularly like their waitress after the look that she had given him, but he didn't want to see her die for it. He hoped that she would smarten up by the time she came back out, which was bound to be any second now really, though it was not an event that he was looking forward to, as hungry as he was, and as much as he wanted his food.
He drummed his fingers against Lucifer's palm nervously, hating how Lucifer seemed able to sit there so calm. But then again, he didn't care if the woman died or not. That kind of disregard for life made Adam uneasy at best, downright terrified at worst.

Lucifer nodded, sighing as the woman came back with the food, placing it down and when Lucifer turned and smiled politely at her, she scurried off pretty quick, leaving Adam to his food. "There...that's...much nicer." Lucifer hadn't actually done anything to the woman, but when there was something that powerful that really looked at you, soul and all? It was unnerving to most humans. They hid themselves from one another...angels saw them for what they really were. Adam had stood up under Lucifer's gaze and even bit back...but then again, what did Adam have to hide from Lucifer? He was normal, and hadn't done anything to mar that lovely innocent soul, not even sleeping with the Devil had managed to corrupt him yet. It was...interesting. He glanced down at their hands and pursed his lips for a moment, gently pulling his hand out from under Adam's, placing it quietly back with it's fellow on his side of the table, freeing Adam to eat easily.

Adam watched the woman run off back into the kitchen. He supposed having her scared was better than having her dead. Scared he could live with, dead, he didn’t think so. He was a little disappointed when Lucifer let his hand go, he liked the contact between them, but he said nothing. Having his hand free was going to make it a hell of a lot easier to eat in any case. Picking up his fork, Adam speared a piece of egg and pushed it into his mouth. He had to resist the urge to moan as the food touched his lips. He hadn’t realized how long it had been since he had honestly eaten real food. It had definitely been way too long. He had to force himself to eat slowly, because suddenly he was ravenous as he realized just how hungry he really was.

Lucifer watched this process with a bit of interest, he had yet to pay much attention to the actual process of eating. He didn't need to eat, but the ways that humans tried to get around their weaknesses did amuse him so. As he watched, he traced symbols into the condensation on the glass of water that he wasn't drinking. Sure it would make his vessel feel better, but when did he care? He didn't like that he burned up Nick's insides nearly literally, but there wasn't much to be done about it for the moment...Sam Winchester was hidden and reluctant at the moment. He would come around. He grinned as he watched Adam's obvious enjoyment at the food, nearly laughing. It made his entire face look different, Lucifer wasn't created dour and serious...once upon a time he didn't even know how to be sad. He learned. "Is that really that good?" He asked, still grinning in amusement.

“Mhmm” Adam nods, chewing on the eggs that were in his mouth. He honestly couldn’t remember the last time that anything had tasted this good. But when you hadn’t eaten in well... probably over a year or so, things tended to taste better than you remembered. He knew that Lucifer didn’t eat, but he figured that was a result of choosing not to, and not because he was actually incapable. So, spearing another piece of egg, Adam holds it out, with a question written on his face. “Do you want to try it?” He asks. He knew he probably looked a little too interested in his food at the moment, but it was giving his body nourishment and strength that he hadn’t felt in a long time. Already he was feeling better than he had since waking up in a field in the middle of Duluth. Plus, it was just comforting, something that he was used to. Sitting in a diner eating breakfast. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was Lucifer sitting across from him, it would almost have been normal.

"Hmmm..." Lucifer tilted his head slightly off to one side as he debated with himself, before leaning forward and taking the small bit of egg in his mouth, chewing hesitantly. He shook his head after he'd swallowed it, but he was still looking slightly entertained about the whole thing. He snickered slightly under his breath and glanced at a table a few down from them and gestured for Adam to look, a very intense talk between a mother and a small child. "Don't stare, yes I know that's gross...but we don't talk about things like that in public." Lucifer repeated since Adam probably wouldn't be able to hear the conversation. "Humans....." He let the thought trail off, slightly shaking his head from side to side with another slightly dry chuckle. "How did you end up being the one I can stand?" His voice was calm, and still held that good humor.

“Because I’m just that awesome” Adam jokes, picking up a piece of his bacon and biting into it, chewing thoughtfully. “In all seriousness though, everyone is different Lucifer. Not everyone sees things the same. People are going to have different views and different opinions. It can’t be helped. I don’t agree with them all, and sometimes people downright piss me off, but that’s the way people are. It’s how we were made. You shouldn’t be so surprised that you actually like one of us. I think you would find that a lot of people really aren’t that bad you know.”
Glancing over at the other table again, Adam stopped talking. Lucifer was actually in a good mood, or seemed to be, and he was well on the way to ruining that. Smooth, Adam. He thought to himself, biting off the last of his toast.

"Mmm, yes of course, that's why...because you're just so...mouthy." He smirked ignoring the whole thing about human beings being different, because they really weren't so different on the whole, little things differed, but most things didn't. "Most people may not be in your eyes, but I can see what they hide, Adam...it's not a pleasant sight most of the time." Lucifer put his hand back out and curled a finger indicating he wanted Adam's hand back now that he thought a human's eating could be handled with one hand. "Please?"
