When Elizabeth was very young, she resigned herself to the fact that her entire life's journey was laid out before her. She would grow up. She would study all that was proper for a young girl to study. She would mind her manners and become a perfectly socially acceptable young woman, and she would catch the attention of a fine man. She would marry him, become his lady wife, bear him sons and perhaps a daughter or two, and she would raise those children to be proper young men and women and she would watch them grow up, find their own husbands and wives. Perhaps she would even live long enough to meet her grandchildren. And then, one way or another, she would die.
She resigned herself to that road, and she hated it every step of the way.
And then Will Turner, Jack Sparrow, Commodore Norrington, Captain Barbossa and the Black Pearl came into her perfectly ordered, perfectly boring life and turned it inside out, upside down and backwards. They brought into her life adventure, danger, pirates, ghosts and ghouls and disembodied hearts and mythical sea creatures. She found herself fighting for her life instead of listening to mindless tittering over the amount of lace to be ordered from London for her dresses. She garbed herself in a man's clothing. With Will as her teacher, she learned to use a man's sword. She became a sailor, a swashbuckler, and adventurer.
And a pirate.
Elizabeth Swann thought she knew exactly where her life was going, but now, nothing for her is certain.
She used to hate the proper lady staring at her from the other side of the mirror. But as much a she hated her, at least she knew her.
Now she stares at the warbling, shadowy reflection on the surface of the water, at the girl with a weather-beaten tri corner hat perched atop her stringy blonde hair...and she does not recognize the face as her own.

Both Sides Now"
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
