polar explorer's hut

Sep 12, 2010 23:08

My new big miniature project is a polar explorer's hut.  The structure is modeled roughly on Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds in Antarctica, but it's going to take inspiration from lots of other huts and explorers and expeditions.  The hut and its contents, that is.  A while ago I made some miniature Primus stoves, the first items for this project.  ( Read more... )

You know "Cape Evans" is more singable? ;)

Ignore my bias; "Cape Royds" it is, and it looks SO LOVELY. You've captured the exact tint of wood that's been freeze-dried by a century of Antarctic chill. Really can't wait to see more of this!

You're right, Cape Evans is more singable - but it's almost twice the size! I've been having a hard enough time with a Cape Royds hut plopped on the floor in my little living room. Don't let those photos fool you, with all that clear wooden floor. I had to move all my furniture out of the way so the clutter and mess wouldn't show up in the pictures.

Anyway. I decided to do Cape Royds because it was smaller, mostly. Cape Evans would have been big enough for me to sleep in it. (Maybe I'll have a Cape Evans coffin when I die.)

Thank you! :D That freeze dried defibrated scoria-blasted look is really hard to achieve!

A Cape Evans coffin would certainly puzzle the archaeologists ...

You have a beautiful floor, BTW. I have a little bit of floor envy.

I would be sure to bury myself with an explanatory note.

I like my floor too! I really need to vacuum it (I'm too lazy to sweep) because somehow I keep constantly getting saw dust and little wood shavings on it. I wonder why? So you can still see a lot of little bits that I didn't photo-edit out.

Oh my gosh, gorgeus as always :D
Ever thought of putting them on display?

I was looking at the miniature in Häme Castle, with it's shiny acrylic paintjob and lack of detail and thought you could have made it so much better...

Thank you so much! I wouldn't mind putting them on display, but I don't know where. So they're just on display in my own house.
