(SPN) Podfic newbie.

Obligatory explainy blurb.
podfic is a new wonder to me; aside from countess7 recording --that he will [ listen] a few months ago, i'd never been introduced to it or sought it out before this week. but then i had two more of my stories recorded, and then requests to record a couple more, and i loved what i was hearing, and went, HOLD ON A SECOND. WHAT IS THIS.

so i asked, last weekend, and got a lot of great jumping off points for where to start with podfic in general, as well as in the spn world.

thanks to the following for all the great information in this post: countess7, chemm80, pennyplainknits, kasmodia, micalaux, wendy, tanpopo03, and dodificus.

this isn't by any means in-depth or what-all; i mean to use it as a reference for myself, something i can add to and keep track of. it's simply a compilation of where i started, which directions i took. i hope if there are those out there who've not been introduced to podfic [KOFF, nola_rue, KOFF], that this might be an easy way for you to begin.

i'm also interested in giving credit where credit is due: podficcing is awesome, and the girls who do it are truly doing it because they enjoy it. i appreciate all their hard work, and i want them to know!

also. please comment with any recs/self-recs [don't be afraid!], important stuff i've left out, guidance, other posts like this, etc. i aim to become obsessed.

> Wide-lens: spn podfic resources.
the newbie guide:
in 2008, general_jinjur (who gives the immense audiofic archive life) wrote a guide to podfic for newbieguide. it's a very simple post explaining what podficcing is, where it came from, the software typically used, and a list of podfic community links over several fandoms. nice, easy, general blurb to get you going.

[for funsies, there is also the spn newbie guide.]

for the fellow geeks: read more about podcasting on wikipedia.

the audiofic archive:
earlier, i mentioned the audiofic archive. this is a massive multi-fandom effort headed up by general_jinjur to create a comprehensive source for podfic. currently, cybel has the formidable task logging spn / spn rpf recordings.

if you spend any amount of time thinking about the organization this must take, you will boggle. if you do not boggle, i am confused.

recordings are logged both as mp3 files and as m4b audiobook files; audiobooks are fun multimedia projects - recordings with art that get logged in your itunes under the "book" tab. the only reason i do not download them is because my roommate and i share itunes folders, and i would rather her not find my spn-gay-erotic-audiofic so easily o_O

there are functions by which to search the audiofic archive by reader, author, pairing, recording length, etc. [go nuts!] but start with our fandom tags, which are logged with most recent additions on top:

audiofic: spn archive
audiofic: spn rpf archive

spn communities:
there are several spn communities either with podfic as a satellite focus, or as the main topic of discussion:

amplificathon || multifandom scene for podfic; runs the amplification, podbang [coming in december!], and ampli[rec]athon challenges yearly [see tag list].
spn_audio_novel || spn longfic recordings that get a slow, chapter-by-chapter reveal
podficpool || open multifandom search community, as well as themed rec posts
spn_gen_podfics || open community for posting gen recordings
motelwincest || open community for posting wincest recordings
podslash || multifandom community to request, create, & share slash recordings
spn_multimedia || dedicated to more elusive forms of fanart [i.e., podfics, zines]
spnfic_podcast || EVP: SPN Fic Podcast [13 editions, recorded & posted july 2006 - august 2007]
podfic_tips || info & advice comm for recording on your own!

spn podfic tags:
there are also plenty of users and rec communities with podfic tags that are super-fun to dig around in:

asking around, i got several of the same names more than once, so i'd very much like to throw them down here as a group of highly creative, motivated, and overall wonderful ladies who contribute some truly incredible stuff to our fandom.

> Micro: favorite recordings so far.
again, i re-iterate: i have not listened to nearly enough for this to be in any way all-inclusive! i've focused on one-shots or multi-parts with files around 45 minutes in length or less, due to my commute time. i've also found that quality is - obviously - an important factor, and have put off listening to a few in favor of a cleaner recording.

you are also about to learn, if you follow in my footsteps and listen to these, that i love accents XD and additionally, that pairing/whatever is of no importance to me when it comes to recordings. it has so much more to do with 1) great writing, and 2) a distinctive reading style! awesome awesome omfg these were all so GOOD.

here are the ones that have sucked me in:

> Pimping out the readers who've recorded me.
thanks (again again) for the time and effort these ladies have put into recording my writing -- ultimately, it has introduced me to a host of fanwork i would've never otherwise come to know.

countess7: listen to where i go [ text] & --that he will [ text].

chemm80: listen to let us in! [ text].

painted_pain: listen to under harvest moon [ text] & come pick me up [ text].

> And most importantly?
feedback your readers. it's art, it's creativity, it's interpretation. it's their perspective and emotions. it's their love and time and effort. the audiofic archive leaves links on all download pages to feedback both the writers and the readers -- thank them, because they deserve it!

and because it makes our fandom go round.

> Kay, that was fun. Now -- rec me!

recs: podfic, spn, podfic love
