Is it stupid, to feel so lonely when someone loves you so much?
But you can't control who you fall in love with. She knows that much. It doesn't make it any easier to say the words, to form them with her lips and have them returned, knowing that she means it and he means it but it isn't enough. He isn't enough for her.
She is enough for him, and she knows that. He would love her until the tides stopped coming in, and she would be beautiful and smart and perfect and everything he could ask for. But he isn't enough for her.
She wants... she doesn't know what she wants.
That's the cruelest thing. She would say, I want someone just for me. But she has that. She would say, I want someone who makes me feel alive, but he already does.
The truth is, maybe she'll never know why she isn't in love with him. Love doesn't make any logical sense, so it's out of her understanding. She's helpless against it. She's known its irrational sting and bite (from the boy who didn't love her but couldn't hurt her, in the end) and she's known for some time now that that isn't what she feels.
She loves Percy Jackson. She does. She cares about him, lives and breathes with him, loves making him happy and says as much, all the time. Love you, he says as they're going to sleep, curled up in separate bunks of the same bed. Love you too, she replies, and she means it. He knows. But she knows, too, that even though he'll send her flowers and she'll dress to kill for him - she isn't in love with him.
She's terrified that that first boy has broken her somehow, that she's no longer able to fall in love.
She's terrified that Percy will never know the difference. That he won't ever have the chance for a real relationship because he has her. Because she can't let go of him.
She's terrified that if he knows, he'll leave. And she needs him, pitifully. She needs him as more than a friend, but less than a lover. She needs him sewn into her heart like a thick, beautiful scar.
She's terrified that if she lets go, she will fall in love, and she'll have to remember what that means.
