101° Fahrenheit (Alan/Mae/Nick, PG)

Alan/Mae/Nick . 600 words . written for flynn_boyant . PG . Mae is easily distracted; also it's hot.

Technically, they were on the hunt for some magical whosiwhatsit that Jamie had warned him about; Nick was walking ahead, eyes scanning the faces of those they passed, but even he had sweat pouring down the back of his neck.

Alan and Mae were walking a little further behind, close, but not touching - not that Alan didn't want to, really, but his shirt was sticking to his chest and it was simply too hot to contemplate touching.

Mae was holding her head up high. Alan watched her out of the corner of his eye, warmth and pride ballooning in his chest. She was so strong and brave, so dedicated, and any sane girl would have stayed behind with Jamie in their air-conditioned home and let the big bad boys do all the hard work.

But Mae wasn't any sort of sane, or rather, she was the perfect kind of insane.

Alan ducked his head to hide his smile.

"Hey, look!" he heard, and Mae grabbed the sleeve of his shirt - smiled over her shoulder, almost as bright as the scorching sun. "Come on!"

Alan had no idea what what going on. He did know that Mae was doing That Thing that she did where she ran ahead, then back to him when she remembered that he couldn't keep up, then ran ahead again, and it was very much like a puppydog but terribly endearing. "This way!"

"What the hell are you on about," Nick muttered, coming up on Alan's other side.

"Can't you see it? You're taller than I am!"

Admittedly, Alan hadn't even tried. He shaded his eyes, looked across the square - and finally realized what Mae was 'on about'.

There was a big fountain in the center of the square.

Nick saw it it, too - Alan could feel it, and felt it when his stance shifted from 'not-awkward third wheel' to 'protector'. "Go on," he said in Mae's direction. "We'll catch up."

Alan gave him a quick, tight smile, and they both watched as Mae grinned her thanks and took off, weaving in between the crowd.

Nick didn't touch him either, but Alan always felt stronger with Nick at his side.

They were almost there when Mae reappeared, bounding back. Alan had half-expected it, but it didn't mean he wasn't pleased, and he held out his hand without a word and she tucked her own into it, and when they stepped into the fountain, she helped him over like a gentleman would for a lady. Nick may or may not have grabbed his ass.

He shot Nick a dirty look, but it quickly melted from the sheer pleasure of the cold water, and Mae took off in a circuit to get as wet as humanly possible but she was back by the time Alan was under the main stream of it, the water pouring in a chilling river down his back and soaking him to the skin.

She was breathless and wet and beautiful; their hands met and he pulled her in close, pressed his lips to the demon's mark at her collarbone (because he could) and licked at the water there, collecting in the small hollow. She shivered and laughed, and behind them, Nick gave a quiet growl of something like pleasure.

They'd get kicked out of the fountain in no time, and after that, blending in would be a lot more difficult, but it was the small things that made this life worth living - worth fighting for.
