If there was one thing that drove Sherlock Holmes absolutely crazy, it was not being able to know something.
"At least let me see the box," he practically whined, fussing through the stacks of papers as if Watson could've hid it there, and forgotten about it, and somehow not realized. He'd already searched both of their bedrooms with the same kind of alarming disregard for the bounds of personal property, with no results. He had, however, found Watson's missing cufflink, for which he was reluctantly grateful. (It had been in Holmes's closet. He wasn't quite sure what to make of that.)
"Absolutely not," Watson replied, watching him from the doorway with one hand in his dressing-gown pocket and another curled around a cup of tea. "And searching won't help."
"I'm beginning to suspect you didn't me anything a'tall," Holmes muttered under his breath.
Watson snorted, and casually eyed Holmes's backside as he bent to excavate under the desk. "Don't be silly. I've a very good present for you, but as I've said, you are not allowed to see it until you open it on Christmas morning."
"But that's thirty-two and a half hours from now!"
Watson calculated slowly, frowning. "It is not. Midnight on Christmas Eve does not count."
Holmes shot to his feet, whirling to point at his friend in accusation. "That is not fair. You can't very well expect me to sleep on Christmas Eve!"
"I," and he moved forward now, to cup Holmes's cheek with his free hand. "Expect you to be very busy on Christmas Eve, my dear."
Ah, there. Holmes's eyes brightened, and he looked vitally interested in this line of conversation. "Do you?"
"Yes." He smiled absolutely angelically, and continued right on without a change in tone at all. "Mary and I are hosting a small Christmas party, that I've taken the liberty of inviting you. Everyone wishes to congratulate you on your success, after all."
Holmes sputtered in indignation, and Watson pulled away, the smile lingering on his lips. A flawless victory.
Now if only he could actually figure out what present to get him, before Holmes realized how badly he was bluffing.
