Will You Trade Your Dreams for His?

I had two people in one day ask me what my 'dream' is. And as I began trying to explain to each of them, I realized I didn't really know. I used to have definite passions, a sense of direction, and many fantastical visions of the future.

Where did they all escape to?

So that night I prayed that God would restore my dreams and fill me with his ( Read more... )

Receive this as a VERY LIGHT response. I had occasion this past week to look up a reference in "Alice Through the looking glass" and there is a little exchange between Alice and the Queen. To one of the queen's "impossible" statements Alice says "There's no use trying, one ca'n't believe impossible things'. And the queen says: I dare say you haven't had much practice" "When I was your age , I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible thing before breakfast."
Which is only to say, do not dismiss your dreams and fantasies too quickly. Rather be prepared to "Give up your small ambitions." Your dreams and fantasies may be used of God just as the queen "practiced" believing impossible things. Dream Big, and imagine all kinds of scenarios, but allow God to build on them and take you in directions you can't imagine. The seed thought or the heart of your dreams is what the Lord is using for you to learn what it is that is your passion. Find out the common theme in your dreams. Is it serving a particular type of people, or doing a particular type of work, etc. etc.? Then when you recognise what is "common" in these dreams, explore where HIS leading will take you. I certainly wouldn't counsel you to "hold on to fantasies" (or dreams) if God is telling you to stop dreaming. But perhaps you are "misreading" his direction, and it is not the "dream" he wants you to "give up" but the idea of how it must come to fulfilment. The day by day is the secret, and over a period of time, Your dream and His guidance may bring it to pass but in a way you may not recognize.

Thanks; that was helpful.

I know that when my delight is in the Lord, he will give me the desires of my heart.
