Gai was attacked by things he couldn't identify. He's down in the Wilderness with injuries, healing well, but he won't be journaling.
I've seen a couple of the enemies. They're human in shape, but not human. One isn't too much for your average fighter. They tend to be slow, like they're injured. In packs, they can get overwhelming.
Now we know what those weapons are for. Use them wisely. The Wilderness is safe if you don't want to stand and fight. Hold onto your journals and pens in case you require help. Guard should be prepared to assist anyone in need.
Let's hope those weapons don't disappear before this threat is gone.
