This bath building on the southern side of the square was originally a MIKVAH, i.e. a Jewish building for ritual ablution. It is one of the oldest stone buildings in Czernowittz, which was constructed as early as in the middle of the 18th century. It is considered an architectural monument, that's why it cannot be demolished.

Ah, well, I didn't know that. In its present condition it is impossible to say that it dates back to 18th century. It looks rather like a soviet barrack from GULAG :)
