Usually they use the records on the PC itself. If it really makes you nervous, I'd recommend using something like Stealthier for Firefox.

The IP tracking is interesting, because they need help from the ISPs. There is good reason to believe that they're compromised some of the larger ones, and are tracking quite a few people, but that's still unbelievable amounts of data to store, sift through, and analyze.

And all of this does little to stop stuff like The REAL 9/11 videos, or other things that are critical of our government, elected officials, or policies.

You also have to look at what's going on with the print media. How many people do you think currently have control over the newspapers? I'm going to guess it's somewhere around a dozen or less. That's scary.

How many people have blogs, web sites, etc? Tens of millions. Much more likely the truth is going to get out. Take a look at some of the grass roots sites for various things, or sites like Wikileaks, or Drudge Report, or Groklaw. They're making the information that a LOT of people in power would like to have suppressed generally available. I haven't heard anything about government pressure, surveillance, or death threats. I'd say we're doing very well, probably better than the 50s and 60s.
