I don't know how many of you have wandered over to the
Drexel Homepage lately, but you might want to check out
this little link. It links to a
page listing the school's various accolades. Now I'm not going sit here and ask Drexel to be modest about their achievements in the world of private universities, the reality is that the increased exposure adds more value to our diplomas and scholarly credentials. Word on the street is that Drexel is in line to be a Tier 2 (currently Tier 3) school by 2005-2006. I was also pleased to read about
our 'wireless' achievements in PC Magazine. Ultimately, I think notoriety like this combined with co-op will be of considerable value when it comes time to enter the job market…
...that being said, I'm inclined to wonder whether some of these “great things” happening at Drexel seem a bit embellished. Like Donovan McNabb's press to performance ratio, Drexel somehow maintains a gleaming reputation within the circles of higher education, as a school that delves out a considerable amount of merit and need based financial aid to its students. I have yet to meet ANYONE who is particularly satisfied with the apparent educational affordability granted to them by the University's Financial Aid Dept. Frankly I think we should all be going to school for FREE before any more
Segway HT's are purchased (didn't they get recalled *laughs*).
..There is also some clever and somewhat misleading wording being employed here. My compliments to the marketing department, or I'm sorry - they call that University Relations (a bit more gentile I suppose - marketing dept. w/ a soul). It’s kinduv like when a movie reviewer says that watching a particular film was “like being trapped in a small room slowly being filled with mustard gas”, and the televised promo merely quotes them as saying “A GAS!”. This is layered on pretty thick in the bit about IST (my major).
Sound off with your assessment of the value and/or accuracy of
Drexel's list of achievements. -
