I'm pretty sure all the hotels closest by the convention center are sold out except the luxury suite types. I started looking in September and The Keating was pretty much the only Gaslamp hotel that had cheaper rooms (my limit was $250/night before tax), and this is with AAA or the Kiwi rate. When I finally called to make reservations a few weeks ago, Keating was sold out except the most expensive suites. Most of the Gaslamp hotels are going to be around $300-400/night (plus the dreaded parking fee!) at the cheapest. Hotel Day or whatever it's called will probably have better rates, but I don't know how much better, and that depends on how quick you are.
Like ihateclooney said, any hotel with a stop from the SDCC free shuttle will be good. I've been told the downtown area is sketchy, unless walking by homeless people at night doesn't faze you. It's probably nothing super dangerous, but I'm a petite female who'll be by herself and I don't want to take any chances.
I ended up with Holiday Inn on the Bay - a little more expensive than other options, but it seems the most convenient, in case the shuttle doesn't stop there next year. I know the trolley runs late until midnight-ish on 'regular' days, so even if you want to hang out in Hard Rock, you won't be stuck there.
Anyway, take all this with a grain of salt. I haven't been to downtown SD before (it's all what I've heard from friends and read online), so if any SD native points out an error, sorry.

HOLY GOD they're all sold out already?! I was just looking at hotels in early September, and I couldn't even book rooms at most of them yet! Aaaaaaaaagh even if they weren't filled to capacity, I don't really have enough financial freedom to dish out $400 a night for four nights. If only... :[
I think I'll stick to relying on the shuttle service then... it sounds pretty good. I don't mind sketchiness so much haha living in Chicago for my entire life has trained me well. :P Plus, my boyfriend and a friend may or may not be accompanying me, so there is always safety in numbers.
It's stressing me out that all of this is so far in the future, because I'm DEFINITELY not someone who plans things out so far in advance. xD Haha.
Thank you so much for the advice, bb! That was very helpful. :]
