It was safe to say that Frederick wasn't the only one who was becoming more endearing by the second; he was quite fond of Lauren, even if it was only the second time that they had spoken out of class. Granted, it wasn't hard for him to talk to someone once they had approached him and gotten him to open up a little, but it just felt different with her.

He didn't feel like he needed to impress her like he did with his colleagues. It was a relaxing sort of feeling, being oneself and not worrying with small, insignificant things. Definitely nice.

"Oh?" he asked, laughing lightly as he reached his office and murmured to wards to unlock the door. One of the first things he wanted to do was to move the private stores from inside the room and perhaps keep them in a safe place within his classroom; it was pain to constantly ward his office. "It's a good thing that's not the case," he added, smiling as he pushed open the door and held it for her so that she could enter first.

"Or else I'd have never suggested you go into Potions, as well." His smile grew a bit teasing, and he knew he'd tiptoed back onto dangerous ground. Was this how they would be, working together? Slowly making their way onto the battlefield, inching forward with flirtatious comments, until at last one of them (likely him) threw up a flag of surrender before running back to the ranks and starting all over? It could get rather exhausting.

"And there's a lot you can do with Potions," he continued, gesturing excitedly. "Hospital work, general brewing, Ministry positions under the Experimental Charms committee... Teaching!" he added, beaming. "Of, if you'd like to consider the potential for wasting one's face, you could go into cosmetic potions."

((omg, they are INSANELY CUTE!! *dies*))

She thought it was quite different with him as well. One couldn't find many professors like this. Professor York, in her mind at least, seemed to be a rare gem. He was so... down to earth. Or at least from what she could tell. He seemed much more laid back than the others, as most of her other teachers seemed to be walking around with a constant stick up their arses. Oh yeah, she thought it.

So this was why Frederick was so very endearing. A refreshing wind, while those who taught her other classes were all stifling.

If she thought seriously about it, he would be the only reason that she would ever consider going into a field of Potions. Not because she had hidden motives and wanted to get closer to him(thought that might be a teensy little part of it, but shhhh!). No. But because he seemed like the type of role model that she could genuinely get along with and learn from. He was an amazing teacher. He was probably a big factor into why she was good at the subject in the first place!!!

Though, for the time being, Lauren was going to keep all this to herself.

"Well, I'm glad we can agree on that," She grinned, wondering how long she would be able to handle this on again/off again game they seemed to have going.

Her grin grew wider as she watched how passionate he got about it, "It does sound interesting. Honestly, I haven't thought about it much. I know that's horrible of me, since I'm in seventh year and all but..." She shrugged, not knowing how to explain herself, "I guess I always had loftier dreams of becoming a singer or something, that I never took the time to think realistically. This Experimental Charms thing sounds intriguing though..." Sounded dangerous(something she loved), was what she really meant. If it was experimenting? One could never know what the outcome would be!

((fhdsjkfhdal THEY ARE. WTF. *shakes fist at themmmm*))

The on-again/off-again thing was rather frustrating. Frederick wished that he could either be daringly flirtatious or else stern and stoic, rejecting any sort of improper behaviour. Unfortunately, he found himself stuck in the middle.

And he was pretty sure that it was only because of her.

After all, if it had been a colleague that he wasn't remotely attracted to, he could have played this game all day and never once become bothered by it. And if it were any other student, who seemed to genuinely have something for him, he'd have no problems letting her (or him...) know that he wasn't going to have inappropriate conversations with her.

So this was confusing. And he was going back and forth between those two reactions, constantly.

He gestured to a large, comfy-looking chair behind his desk before moving around to pick up a stack of filing folders. "Well, there's nothing wrong with dreams. It's all about balancing a career with dreams. There's no rule that says an Auror can't be an artist, a Potions Master can't be a writer, a teacher can't be a photographer... You can always sing, no matter what you do."

Then, having thought about it, he looked to her with a quirky expression. "Wait. You sing?"

Yes. Let's just go blaming Lauren for this whole thing.

Only not!! She was perfectly innocent in all of this, thanks. It was his choice whether to flirt or not. If he was finding it so frustrating, he needed to go ahead and pick which one it was going to be! Though at the moment, she didn't so much care which way it was... she just wanted him to decide.

Okay. That was a lie, she really hoped that he decided to stick with the flirtation, as it was too much fun.

As he gestured, she took the liberty of bouncing on over to the chair and plopping down to make herself comfortable. She let out a sigh, smiling as she watched and listened to him. He did have a point there. Her dream was always to do something with music, but it wasn't necessarily realistic. Her mother had warned her countless times how difficult it was to break into the industry. Her best bet would be to get a proper job to stabilize her and then go from there to reach her goals.

Lauren laughed at his expression, nodding her head enthusiastically to confirm, "Yes. I do. I play the guitar too... and I'm working on the piano and some other instruments but... yep! Wow, you're learning so much about me already and we're just getting started!" Giggle.

He didn't know why this came as such a surprise. There was an awful lot that he didn't know about most of his students, so why did this shock him? He supposed that part of it was Lauren's appearance -- while a very lovely girl, she just came off as the type to be interested in fashion and beauty, not music. It was a pleasant surprise.

"Wow," he replied, shaking his head and continuing to shuffle through the filing folders he'd started to organize on the desk. "I didn't know that, actually." He gave her a small smile, then handed her a stack of the files.

"These aren't really organized at all," he warned, picking up a file and shaking it lightly as he explained what they'd be doing. "What I need first is for them all to be separated into school years, starting with everything from 2005 and 2006 and working backwards... Then we'll worry about getting them all sorted out by classes, then alphabetical by student." He nodded once, feeling accomplished already. He had a plan, at least!

Feeling the need to add something in there, he hesitated with his stack. "I write," he offered, nodding as he shrugged and moved across the desk to take a seat. "Just... since you shared something. Thought I'd share back."

Uhhh. Lame much?

"Not many do," She shrugged, for once being humble and not acting all conceited like she was known to do. Lauren actually had a good amount of humility, she just chose to hide it behind her confidence. "It's not something I like to brag too much about." Adding almost as an after thought.

The girl would have burst out laughing if she had known his thoughts. Had he seriously taken her for one of those fashion and beauty freaks? Not to say that she didn't like any of that -- Lauren made sure her appearance was always presentable. She had a quirky and fun kind of style that was a little different from the main stream fashion. She prided herself in being original and unique, at least with little details.

Though, she would have taken him thinking such things as a compliment. And hopefully he wasn't disappointed in this new development of her being more into music than outward appearances.

Lauren listened intently as he listed off what he would like her to do. She nodded where it was appropriately, showing that she understood. Well. It certainly didn't sound like the most exciting work, but still she was happy to lend a hand where she could! And who knows, maybe she would end up learning a few things from him. Maybe he'd even learn a few things from her.

"Perfect! I can totally do that," And rather than waiting any longer, she set to work.

Her eyes lifted from her stack, her head cocking to the side as he shared. There was a fond little smirk on her face before she replied, "I figured. I mean, I assumed. Since you... said something about how a Potions Master could write... so what do you write? Can I ask that?" She didn't think it was lame at all, thanks.

Right. Duh. Of course she'd figured that out from what he'd said earlier! He honestly didn't even realize he'd worded things as such, it had just rolled out so naturally. Wasn't he just an awkward old fuddy duddy?

"Ah, well, nothing big," he replied, giving her a crinkly-eyed smile. "Mostly little things. Observations and the like." He shrugged it off, not going into detail about what he wrote. It wasn't really anything interesting, merely the fact that he wrote was what he'd made a point out of.

Sharing! All that stuff. It was the least he could do since she'd offered her help and also told him a little more about herself.

"Here, I've got a ton from oh-four," he added as an afterthought, plopping a large stack of his files onto the desk. That would make a decent start, at least. And it was always a comfort to get away from personal subjects and back to basics, for some reason.

He supposed it was just the sort of person he was.

He really needed to stop thinking so badly of himself -- or at least that's what she would have told him, if she could read minds!! Shame she couldn't, as Lauren thought it would make their whole situation a lot easier.

Ah, but Lauren was just far too intrigued by this point. Did he think he could get away with that little amount? Pfft. She found it very interesting for some reason. Maybe because writing had always fascinated her, even if she wasn't into reading much. Was that weird? It sounded quite contradictory in her mind, but she ran with it. Plus she liked to write songs, so... perhaps she was a writer herself.

"That sounds wonderful, Professor," She encouraged with a bright smile, "I'd love to see some of your work sometime..."

Lauren then eyed the new stack he'd placed in front of her, her eyes rounding slightly, "Looks like we're gonna be here for awhile, hey?" She could tell he didn't so much want to keep talking about himself so... she didn't say anything else. Give the girl some credit, please. She knew when to control herself sometimes.

All he could say to her response was a weak "Maybe."

After all, he'd never shown anyone his 'work,' as she'd put it. He'd have never called it that, as it simply wasn't work to him. It was a hobby, something he did in his spare time. And he also didn't think that it was very good, considering the fact that it was something he'd never actively pursued or learned very much behind the mechanics of it.

So.... 'Maybe' was really all he could give her, or anyone else.

He grimaced slightly as he realized just how big that stack was, especially now that he was dumping another file folder on top of it. "It does look grim, doesn't it?" he asked, chuckling lightly. "But you don't need to worry about it -- you'll have to head to class soon, and I'll have my own to teach." He flipped his wrist over, inspecting his watch to see what time it was.

Had nearly an hour already flown by?! Merlin.

((yikes! i'm sorry! i forgot to warn you that i was going to be out of town for a couple days. but i'm back!! ♥))

Maybe? Well. Maybe was better than a flat out no, so Lauren was quite pleased with that. She was also quite positive that with a little buttering up she could get him to show her some of his work. Though, she was also quite positive that she could get him to do anything if given the proper amount of time, so... perhaps her thinking wasn't all that realistic.

She didn't care if he was good or bad at writing, or even whether he considered it actual work or just fluff he liked to do when bored. Lauren was interested. And usually, once she set her mind on something, it was near impossible to get out. So her curiosity had definitely been peaked with this.

"Seriously! If I knew you had this much work to do, I would have made an excuse not to come and run down the hall in the other direction!" Lauren laughed, flashing one of her famous cheeky grins before amending, "Nah, but I'm not worried. I wouldn't have volunteered if I didn't want to help. So this lot? Piece of cake."

She bit her lip before turning back to the stack that she was working with... wondering why she felt a pang in her stomach at the realization that they'd soon have to part ways.

((It's all good!! I knew you were going away because of the eljay posts! ^_^))

Frederick couldn't help but let out a hearty chuckle as she feigned disgust at all the work they had to do. However, he couldn't contain the genuine smile at knowing that she was only joking, and that she'd be around to help him out with all of the dreadful filing.

She was definitely good company. He'd made a smart decision by making the point to chat with her back in the halls.

He sighed as he stood, having sorted through the stack he had grabbed in the beginning. It wasn't much, but it was definitely a start -- piles littered his desk, and soon they'd likely be so tall that they'd begin toppling over. He knew he'd need to make more space for them, so he moved around the desk to begin moving a few stacks of books around.

"Don't try and deny it," he said, pausing to groan as he shoved one stack of ancient-looking books with his foot, "I saw that fleeting look of desperation in your eyes back there. I'm sure if you'd had more time to decide and ponder to yourself, 'Now what will Professor York be wrangling me into doing today?' then you'd have definitely taken off."

He stood, grinning down at her before reaching out to ruffle her hair playfully. After all, he was pretty sure he'd have taken off, if he'd been her!

He just... ruffled her hair?!?

Lauren smiled, biting her lip in the process because she didn't know what else to do. A hair ruffle. A HAIR RUFFLE!! No. She wasn't turned off by it because it messed up her hair. That she could care less about. The part that she found problematic and disappointing was the fact that a hair ruffle was basically saying that he thought of her like a kid.

He was the adult. And she was the kid. Oh, how could she have forgotten so easily?

Why this was so disheartening, she wasn't quite sure. Of course she remembered and still believed that he saw more of her and respected her more as an individual than the other students... but she supposed she'd over estimated it a bit. She was still just a student to him, so she had to stop pretending.

"True. If I weren't such an impulsive person and had actually thought about it, I might have had to act as if I suddenly came down with food poisoning or something." She laughed, pushing whatever silly thoughts she was having to the back of her mind. There was no reason to get annoyed at his little action, as there was nothing going on here so... yeah. She was just over thinking things waaaay too much.

"But anyway, are you looking forward to this new school year?"

((...ROFLMAO POOR LAUREN))

A kiddish hair ruffle. It would look that way, wouldn't it?

Unfortunately, not being a man who knew how to really show affection in ways that were appropriate, Frederick had thought that a lighthearted hair ruffle would be the way to go. After all, it said, 'I like you, and I feel comfortable in your presence; here is a friendly gesture to show that!'

Had he actually contemplated the myriad of ways she could have taken it, he'd have never done it. Because while she was the younger of the two, he did not think of her as a child. Merlin knew he'd have never flirted so openly with her if he did.

"Mmm, no," he replied casually, leaning against the wall and studying a ridiculously old file in his hand. Frowning as he read the year (nineteen-eighty-four?!), he paused to toss it in the rubbish bin before giving her a cheeky smile. "Food poisoning's no good. I'd have just insisted on feeding you a potion."

With a squinty-eyed smile, he crouched once more to clean out the space he'd been working on while answering her question.

"I am! I'm determined -- as you see -- to get far more organized this year. To get things cleaned and put in their place, so that I can concentrate on making Potions a fun class. People around here are far too afraid of having fun with a cauldron." This thought made him frown, as he happened to adore potion brewing.

Times like these it would be lovely to simply be able to talk everything through. Lay it all out there. Throw it all on the table. COMMUNICATE. It would save a lot of trouble and possible heart ache.

But again, since nothing was happening between them -- they were just flirting innocently -- the lack of communication was expected. That, and it would probably be highly inappropriate for the two to have conversations leading into the serious arena. Especially if there were confessions of being attracted to one another.

Lauren, at this point, was half way done with the first stack he had given her. It took her a bit to get going, but once she got her file system going, she was able to increase her speed. She was hoping she could at least get two stacks done before needing to leave.

"Mmm," She hummed, looking up from her work, "You can feed me anytime." Her tone was... yeah, definitely not on the innocent side, and she herself wasn't exactly sure WHAT she was insinuating. Which was odd, because she generally knew what her double meanings meant. This time it just came out without her even thinking about it; the slow, sultry tone and all! So yes, she quickly caught herself and cleared her throat, "I mean... right. A potion. Of course."

For the first time in any of their encounters? She felt awkward. Woo!

She was glad they had this other subject to jump to, "Organization is key, I would say. Though I'm interested to see how you're planning on making it fun. Not that I don't find it fun, but other people? Aren't so easily convinced."

((haha. omg, i love them... *dies* and sorry, I am SO on crack right now, I don't even know what I'm writing half the time! haha))

((LOL teh crack makes everything excusable. CARRY ON!))

Heartache. Yeah, well, Frederick didn't exactly like to think in those terms, therefore the possibility of laying anything on the table (and no, he didn't just mean that as a double entendre...) didn't occur to him.

That was mostly because there wasn't anything to discuss. He'd continue to tell himself, right up to the point of watching some Auror slobber all over her. Why bother laying anything out in the open when there wasn't a reason? No reason to be jealous, should that happen.. No reason to care, no reason to come up with reasons... See, it only led to confusion.

He couldn't have heartache if there was nothing to be heartbroken about. It was the simplest way of handling things like this, right?

Of course, all of his non-reasoning was blown to tiny little bits when she made the comment about feeding her, and he couldn't help but cough rather abruptly. He'd been about to ask her to repeat herself (because surely he'd heard incorrectly), when she'd carried on. Well. Right then.

He blinked at her, somewhat wary, then grinned once more. "Of course," he repeated, before moving right along with what she'd happily jumped back to.

"Hmm, I have my ways. Nearly anything can be made fun, if you just go about it the right way. I'm thinking... music," he finished, giving her a careful gaze. "Any suggestions? Some good records we could put on while getting our brew on?"

sheisavixen November 20 2007, 07:37:17 UTC
Well, yeah! Of course there wasn't going to be any heart ache... right? Right! The more Lauren told herself that, the more she'd believe it. Because... he was her Professor. And just because they were spending more time together didn't meant that... well, it didn't mean that she had to jump to conclusions!

Which was really odd, because she wasn't normally the one who would over analyze a bit of flirting. Somehow, though, this was different to her. She tried not to think of it any differently than any of the other blokes she teased and acted coy around. But if she honestly took the time to think about it? She might realize that she felt a little different when she flirted with Frederick.

Good thing she didn't think about it, as that would merely FREAK HER OUT! A lot. Which would probably make her withdraw. So in the end, it was good that she had the capability of ignoring things like feelings and butterflies.

Lauren was so relieved when he didn't ask about her comment. Seriously, what did telling him he could feed her even MEAN?!? Seriously! That had possibly been one of the worst lines she had ever said, and not because it had some dirty meaning behind it, but because she still couldn't figure out why she'd let it slip out of her mouth.

"Music?" This was a subject that could perk her up and distract her from anything, "Oh, Professor, you really are brilliant! Music would be the perfect addition to class... though I might be a little bit biased. But we definitely have to have something funky. Music we can dance to. I bet you have some moves, yeah?" Giggle.
