"Hello, Lauren," he replied, smiling politely before listening as she explained her situation.
Of course, when her eyes bugged out of her head and she fished through her robe to find the elusive pack of chewing game. He couldn't help but laugh at her triumph, and watched curiously as she offered him a piece.
Hm. He wasn't one to have sweets during the school day (mostly because the thought of chewing something while inhaling potions fumes made him a bit worried), but he figured there couldn't be any harm in it right now. He wouldn't be over a steamy cauldron for at least another hour and a half! "I believe I would, thank you," he replied, grabbing one and unwrapping it carefully. "Though I'm not sure anything can compare to classic bubble gum."
What could he say? He was traditional!
Reply
Lauren was glad that he decided to partake in the sweet, as she thought everyone should chew bubble gum on a daily basis. Why? Lauren had a theory that chewing bubble gum made a person happier. Of course there was no rhyme or reason for that thinking so she wouldn't be getting into a debate about it anytime soon, but the theory was still there.
She pondered this classic bubble gum comment as she continued to chew, idly blowing a small bubble before replying, "The classic is just that -- classic! It'll never get old, that's for sure. And it would probably be my second favorite flavor. But I like this because it freshens your breath and makes your mouth feel clean." Shrug.
Okay. Enough talk about gum, as she was getting bored with that conversation!
"Anyway, how are you? Did ya have a good summer? I know it was a hard couple months without me in your life, but it's nice to see you're still alive!" Lauren winked, giggling almost to herself. Good grief, it had only taken her a mere minute or two to start flirting. She was such a hopeless cause.

She would be concerned with that, wouldn't she? Frederick shook his head and gave a chuckle, then straightened a bit as she teased him.
Certainly wasn't a modest one, was she? He had her pegged that far not too long ago, and it was slightly nice to see that she hadn't changed all that much.
Affecting a wounded, pouting expression, he nodded sadly. "It was awful," he replied, sighing dramatically. "But thank goodness I'm back here in the castle, where you aren't too far away." He broke the facade and laughed again before turning toward his destination and gesturing for her to walk with him.
He could use a helping hand, if she wasn't heading somewhere important... or, you know, if she was willing to miss a less-than-thrilling class.

Seriously. If she had known what direction his thoughts were running, Lauren may have actually been embarrassed!! So for reputation's sake, it was good she couldn't read minds.
Lauren was so pleased that he was comfortable and able to play along with the act. Even if it wasn't really flirting(as she wasn't sure he would consider it that) and more of playful conversation. It was still fun, and lifted her spirits. Besides, it was one of those things -- she wanted to see just how far she could push it before she went to far. Just how far would this Professor York go, she wondered.
At his gesture, she nodded and walked beside him, choosing then that missing the next class was well worth it if she got to figure out more about Frederick.
"Yep. It is a blessing, isn't it?" Lauren let out a dreamy sigh, "Now you won't have to pine. Well, actually, you will have to pine, as the whole professor/student thing isn't allowed, but you'll still get to see me almost every day! So that's got to be some sort of consolation, yeah?"

He rather liked these chance meetings with Lauren. He was a friendly guy, even when he was feeling less-than-good. He always preferred to put on a happy face and keep those negative things bottled up inside. Yet.. not many people liked to interact with him. He had a tendency to seem unapproachable, he supposed, just because he wasn't a go-getter type.
But those that took the chance usually were pleased by what they found within him.
"What class have you got now, anyway?" he asked, lifting a brow in her direction. He wouldn't have her missing anything important just to help him out, anyway. He was still a professor, after all!
"If it's nothing too major, I was hoping you wouldn't mind helping out with some filing?"
Oh, it sounded so lame. But yes, he was filing. Filing! He'd found in his first year not so long ago that the previous Potions Master had not been terribly keen on organization. It had finally gotten the best of Frederick.

Her grin was insanely cheeky as she winked, her laughter bubbling up inside her again. Some might think it so utterly wrong to be talking to ones professor in this manner... but to Lauren, it just came natural.
In her mind, the Professor wasn't unapproachable at all! No, in fact, he was more so. She could tell he wasn't the type to go out of his way to interact with people. He seemed rather shy at times and... well, those types were forever catching her interest. She wasn't going to be afraid of a little bit of timidity. Besides, Frederick seemed to handle himself very well with Lauren -- she wondered why he didn't act this way with others.
"Oh, pfft," She waved her hand to dismiss the matter, "Don't you worry your pretty little head about it," Another wink, "It's nothing that I can't make up for by stealing someones notes!" Read as: Tori has no idea what class Lauren has, because she is too lazy to look it up, kthnx. "Besides, I'd love to help. I have some wicked secretarial skills, after all."

Apparently, there was only so much Frederick could take before his cheeks turned a shade pinker and he found that little tickle in his throat unbearable. So he coughed a little, diverted his eyes, and put on a somewhat weak and forced smile. She'd likely know from their previous encounter that it was his silent way of saying, 'I believe that's enough.'
It wasn't that he didn't enjoy her company, or that he didn't find her quite pretty. The opposite, really. He found her to be someone who was alarmingly interesting and fun to chat with, and thus the joking seemed only half-joking to him. Her cool phrasing of being his in a few months made that very male and rather lonely part of him perk up a bit. Which was ridiculous!
Thus, it was enough. No more joking for now.
"I'm sure you do," he replied, grinning a bit more easily now. "I hear all the best secretaries swear by their chewing gum, you know. Something about ... proving one can multi-task?" He laughed a little, then shook his head. "After all, we know that you can talk, walk, and be outstandingly charming all the while popping and chewing on your Sweet Mint gum."

Was she embarrassed? Not in the least. Was she feeling guilty? Hell no! Seeing that flush on his face was far worth the trouble. Lauren would even go to detention for it, as sad as that may be to admit, but she would! It was that sick pleasure she got in making people uncomfortable... it just made them that much more endearing in her eyes, seriously.
Frederick was cute when he blushed. Hehehe.
Though, if she knew that he only thought of it as half-joking and that... well... there were other factors in the matter, she might not have teased or joked so much. But who knows, so much could happen in a few months, there was no telling where they would be once the end of the school year rolled around!!
Ah, but now he was the one teasing her. That was a nice change of things. And aww, he thought she was charming!! She would tuck that away to think on later, thanks. Lauren laughed, shaking her head slightly as she smiled over at him, "You are correct, sir. I am quite the multi-tasker. I could--" She cut herself off, realizing that what she was going to say would probably boarder on the inappropriate, so she changed direction, covering up smoothly"I mean, if you need help more often? We could consider this a test run. If you like what you see, then... I could become your new secretary!"

On the other hand, he would have also been frustrated. It was merely a toss up as to which way his emotions would have led him.
At her offer to become his new secretary, he laughed heartily and stuck his hands down deep into his pockets. "Is that so?" he asked, looking to her with a glance as if to size her up. "I suppose every soon-to-be-well-known Potions Master needs an assistant, hm?" He grinned easily, then contemplated something more serious about that statement... She was actually good at Potions. Rather good, if he were to be honest with himself.
"Depending on what you'd like to go into..." he trailed off, shrugging lightly as he looked back to their path so that he could watch where he was walking as he took the first step down toward the dungeons. "It could be a good start for anyone wanting to go into Potions."

That had been assistant work. Kinda.
Though she knew that things that Frederick would be having her do would be different. Still, she was intrigued and hoped that all those multi-tasking skills really paid off!! It was a shame they didn't have computers here... as she was quite the brilliant typer and would have volunteered to type anything out for him. Oh well!
"Yep! And I can even sit on your desk with my little nail filer, while popping my gum in hopes to distract you from your work. It will be fabulous!"
Lauren's brow quirked at his last statement. Go into Potions? Hmm. Truthfully, she hadn't exactly thought about that. Sure, she loved potions, but enough to go into a career field? Though this might be the time to be a little serious, she just couldn't have any of that. Her expression was one of mock confusion as she pointed toward her cheek, "You think I'm going to waste this beautiful face on Potions? Ha!" She smiled, letting him know she was still joking.

It was too perfect; someone surely had already beat that storyline to death.
Though he wouldn't deny the image in his head was providing quite a bit of amusement. He enjoyed chatting with her, and having her around while he was working would surely make his work more enjoyable. It only made sense, right? Right. So he was determined to usher her in as some sort of lovely assistant (minus sequins), so that he would both finish this task more quickly, and enjoy doing it.
He was about to say something, when her statement about wasting her beautiful face on potions caught him by surprise. His first reaction was a wide-eyed expression akin to 'I didn't suggest that, don't take it the wrong way! Not only ugly people are in potions!' but as he realized she was joking he let out a bark of a laugh instead.
"Why didn't I think of that?" he cried, tossing a hand up as he rounded another corner, the dungeons dark and harder to navigate than the bright, happy Hogwarts halls above. "Silly me, I'd forgotten that only the beastly and truly hideous enjoy hiding behind their cauldrons."
He glanced back over his shoulder, giving her a playful wink.

Oh, she knew he would never dare make a move or do something that wasn't allowed. But she on the other hand? Well. Let's just say Lauren didn't exactly have self control when it came to the opposite sex. Though that wasn't a secret, it was quite the common knowledge. Heh.
Still. The idea of being someones sexy secretary had it's appeal. She was now thinking up all the cute, secretarial outfits she could wear... ha! Oh, Frederich was in for the time of his life, if he let her help out.
Lauren, of course, could not contain her laughter at his expression. It was yet another priceless thing! He looked so stunned by her saying she wouldn't waste her beautiful face... but she was glad he caught on and was able to laugh along.
She let out a contented sigh as she tried to catch her breath from all the laughing, following him and perhaps holding back a secret smile for when he wasn't looking. He had winked at her. How cute was that? He was getting more endearing by the second. She was beginning to wish they'd hung out more throughout her years at Hogwarts. But now, if she helped him, they'd be able to make up for lost time.
"If that is the case, then you shouldn't be in this field either!" She complimented, but because she wasn't sure how he would take it, she kept on going, "But seriously, I might be interested. I mean... I love Potions, but what all could I do career wise with it?"

He didn't feel like he needed to impress her like he did with his colleagues. It was a relaxing sort of feeling, being oneself and not worrying with small, insignificant things. Definitely nice.
"Oh?" he asked, laughing lightly as he reached his office and murmured to wards to unlock the door. One of the first things he wanted to do was to move the private stores from inside the room and perhaps keep them in a safe place within his classroom; it was pain to constantly ward his office. "It's a good thing that's not the case," he added, smiling as he pushed open the door and held it for her so that she could enter first.
"Or else I'd have never suggested you go into Potions, as well." His smile grew a bit teasing, and he knew he'd tiptoed back onto dangerous ground. Was this how they would be, working together? Slowly making their way onto the battlefield, inching forward with flirtatious comments, until at last one of them (likely him) threw up a flag of surrender before running back to the ranks and starting all over? It could get rather exhausting.
"And there's a lot you can do with Potions," he continued, gesturing excitedly. "Hospital work, general brewing, Ministry positions under the Experimental Charms committee... Teaching!" he added, beaming. "Of, if you'd like to consider the potential for wasting one's face, you could go into cosmetic potions."

She thought it was quite different with him as well. One couldn't find many professors like this. Professor York, in her mind at least, seemed to be a rare gem. He was so... down to earth. Or at least from what she could tell. He seemed much more laid back than the others, as most of her other teachers seemed to be walking around with a constant stick up their arses. Oh yeah, she thought it.
So this was why Frederick was so very endearing. A refreshing wind, while those who taught her other classes were all stifling.
If she thought seriously about it, he would be the only reason that she would ever consider going into a field of Potions. Not because she had hidden motives and wanted to get closer to him(thought that might be a teensy little part of it, but shhhh!). No. But because he seemed like the type of role model that she could genuinely get along with and learn from. He was an amazing teacher. He was probably a big factor into why she was good at the subject in the first place!!!
Though, for the time being, Lauren was going to keep all this to herself.
"Well, I'm glad we can agree on that," She grinned, wondering how long she would be able to handle this on again/off again game they seemed to have going.
Her grin grew wider as she watched how passionate he got about it, "It does sound interesting. Honestly, I haven't thought about it much. I know that's horrible of me, since I'm in seventh year and all but..." She shrugged, not knowing how to explain herself, "I guess I always had loftier dreams of becoming a singer or something, that I never took the time to think realistically. This Experimental Charms thing sounds intriguing though..." Sounded dangerous(something she loved), was what she really meant. If it was experimenting? One could never know what the outcome would be!

The on-again/off-again thing was rather frustrating. Frederick wished that he could either be daringly flirtatious or else stern and stoic, rejecting any sort of improper behaviour. Unfortunately, he found himself stuck in the middle.
And he was pretty sure that it was only because of her.
After all, if it had been a colleague that he wasn't remotely attracted to, he could have played this game all day and never once become bothered by it. And if it were any other student, who seemed to genuinely have something for him, he'd have no problems letting her (or him...) know that he wasn't going to have inappropriate conversations with her.
So this was confusing. And he was going back and forth between those two reactions, constantly.
He gestured to a large, comfy-looking chair behind his desk before moving around to pick up a stack of filing folders. "Well, there's nothing wrong with dreams. It's all about balancing a career with dreams. There's no rule that says an Auror can't be an artist, a Potions Master can't be a writer, a teacher can't be a photographer... You can always sing, no matter what you do."
Then, having thought about it, he looked to her with a quirky expression. "Wait. You sing?"

Only not!! She was perfectly innocent in all of this, thanks. It was his choice whether to flirt or not. If he was finding it so frustrating, he needed to go ahead and pick which one it was going to be! Though at the moment, she didn't so much care which way it was... she just wanted him to decide.
Okay. That was a lie, she really hoped that he decided to stick with the flirtation, as it was too much fun.
As he gestured, she took the liberty of bouncing on over to the chair and plopping down to make herself comfortable. She let out a sigh, smiling as she watched and listened to him. He did have a point there. Her dream was always to do something with music, but it wasn't necessarily realistic. Her mother had warned her countless times how difficult it was to break into the industry. Her best bet would be to get a proper job to stabilize her and then go from there to reach her goals.
Lauren laughed at his expression, nodding her head enthusiastically to confirm, "Yes. I do. I play the guitar too... and I'm working on the piano and some other instruments but... yep! Wow, you're learning so much about me already and we're just getting started!" Giggle.
