((IT TOOK FOREVER TO DECIDE WHO TO PUT IN.))

Frederick was on his way to class, as well; only with the next hour being studentless, he was hoping to get caught up on some paperwork which had piled up on him a bit in the past few days since school had started again. Tuesdays were his favorite days (aside from the weekend, obviously), as he had fewer classes. Catch-Up Day, he called it.

To himself, anyway. If he'd said that aloud to anyone else, they would have surely thought him a dork.

He rounded the corner just in time to see one of the Gryffindors -- very familiar, she was -- lifting her fist and cursing the heavens. He couldn't stop the grin that came to his face as he drew closer and lifted his brows curiously.

"Arch-nemesis at it again?" he asked, finding her reaction so comical that he couldn't help himself. And then he realized why she looked so familiar. It was that same cheeky monkey that had him nearly rolling with laughter in the professor's lounge last year!

"Professor York!" Lauren smiled, laughing slightly because he'd caught her cursing, as well as finding his reaction amusing. They hadn't exactly talked yet, since school just started, but she would never forget that time in the lounge they'd spent together. It was a priceless memory.

She shook her head at his question before shrugging, "Actually it's not an arch-nemesis, though I have plenty of those and I'm sure they'll start plotting schemes of evil against me soon. For now it's just the fact that I can't find my chewing gum!" Now she frowned, her lips forming a pout, "I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of addicted to the stuff. I always carry it with me and to--" Lauren cut herself off, her eyes increasing in size as a thought struck her ( ... )

It was a good thing that Frederick taught a core class. Had he been the professor of Muggle Studies, or Runes, or something else in which he didn't have the opportunity to learn students names from early on, he'd have not known how to address her. He was awful with names ( ... )

He better remember her name!!! Lauren made a point to make sure people remembered her name, and if her very own Professor of Potions couldn't do it -- a class which she was dearly fond of(fond of both the content and the teacher) -- then that would just be kind of sad and she would have had to make more of an effort. But anyway, he did know her name, so she wasn't even thinking about that ( ... )

Being a professor, he was well aware of those students he had to keep an eye on when it came to sneaking about and snogging in dark corners. Lauren's name was near the top of that list, so her comment about the gum making her mouth feel clean made him snort lightly.

She would be concerned with that, wouldn't she? Frederick shook his head and gave a chuckle, then straightened a bit as she teased him.

Certainly wasn't a modest one, was she? He had her pegged that far not too long ago, and it was slightly nice to see that she hadn't changed all that much.

Affecting a wounded, pouting expression, he nodded sadly. "It was awful," he replied, sighing dramatically. "But thank goodness I'm back here in the castle, where you aren't too far away." He broke the facade and laughed again before turning toward his destination and gesturing for her to walk with him.

He could use a helping hand, if she wasn't heading somewhere important... or, you know, if she was willing to miss a less-than-thrilling class.

Hey now, that wasn't the only reason she liked that flavor!! True. It helped when she happened upon a random snog and didn't have time to brush her teeth -- chewing some after every meal was a kind of a little obsessive compulsive habit she had. But again, that wasn't the only reason. It was just a tasty flavor of sweetness and minty freshness!

Seriously. If she had known what direction his thoughts were running, Lauren may have actually been embarrassed!! So for reputation's sake, it was good she couldn't read minds ( ... )

"May be harder, actually," he teased, giving her a lopsided grin. "Having you so close and yet so so far away..." He clutched his chest as if he were in physical pain from the awfulness of the situation, then cracked up once more.

He rather liked these chance meetings with Lauren. He was a friendly guy, even when he was feeling less-than-good. He always preferred to put on a happy face and keep those negative things bottled up inside. Yet.. not many people liked to interact with him. He had a tendency to seem unapproachable, he supposed, just because he wasn't a go-getter type.

But those that took the chance usually were pleased by what they found within him.

"What class have you got now, anyway?" he asked, lifting a brow in her direction. He wouldn't have her missing anything important just to help him out, anyway. He was still a professor, after all!

"If it's nothing too major, I was hoping you wouldn't mind helping out with some filing?"

Oh, it sounded so lame. But yes, he was filing. Filing! He'd found in his first ( ... )

Lauren couldn't help but throw her head back and laugh as she walked. Oh man, this was rich. "Well, I suppose that's true... though it must make you feel increasingly better to know that this is my last year in school. Only a few more months, Frederick," Yes, she used his first name, as that would only add to the act, "And then I'm all yours."

Her grin was insanely cheeky as she winked, her laughter bubbling up inside her again. Some might think it so utterly wrong to be talking to ones professor in this manner... but to Lauren, it just came natural.

In her mind, the Professor wasn't unapproachable at all! No, in fact, he was more so. She could tell he wasn't the type to go out of his way to interact with people. He seemed rather shy at times and... well, those types were forever catching her interest. She wasn't going to be afraid of a little bit of timidity. Besides, Frederick seemed to handle himself very well with Lauren -- she wondered why he didn't act this way with others ( ... )

And then the flirting turned awkward once more.

Apparently, there was only so much Frederick could take before his cheeks turned a shade pinker and he found that little tickle in his throat unbearable. So he coughed a little, diverted his eyes, and put on a somewhat weak and forced smile. She'd likely know from their previous encounter that it was his silent way of saying, 'I believe that's enough.'

It wasn't that he didn't enjoy her company, or that he didn't find her quite pretty. The opposite, really. He found her to be someone who was alarmingly interesting and fun to chat with, and thus the joking seemed only half-joking to him. Her cool phrasing of being his in a few months made that very male and rather lonely part of him perk up a bit. Which was ridiculous! Thus, it was enough. No more joking for now ( ... )

And that would be the line. Hmm. Good to know! Lauren mentally took note of this, now knowing just how far he would allow things to go.

Was she embarrassed? Not in the least. Was she feeling guilty? Hell no! Seeing that flush on his face was far worth the trouble. Lauren would even go to detention for it, as sad as that may be to admit, but she would! It was that sick pleasure she got in making people uncomfortable... it just made them that much more endearing in her eyes, seriously.

Frederick was cute when he blushed. Hehehe.

Though, if she knew that he only thought of it as half-joking and that... well... there were other factors in the matter, she might not have teased or joked so much. But who knows, so much could happen in a few months, there was no telling where they would be once the end of the school year rolled around!!

Ah, but now he was the one teasing her. That was a nice change of things. And aww, he thought she was charming!! She would tuck that away to think on later, thanks. Lauren laughed, shaking her head ( ... )

If he had known that she wasn't deterred by his embarrassment, or that she'd made a mental note of that boundary that couldn't be crossed, he'd have been conflicted. On one hand, he'd have liked to know that she wouldn't just be offended at his dropping the flirtations and feel like she wasn't giving up on teasing him, so to speak.

On the other hand, he would have also been frustrated. It was merely a toss up as to which way his emotions would have led him.

At her offer to become his new secretary, he laughed heartily and stuck his hands down deep into his pockets. "Is that so?" he asked, looking to her with a glance as if to size her up. "I suppose every soon-to-be-well-known Potions Master needs an assistant, hm?" He grinned easily, then contemplated something more serious about that statement... She was actually good at Potions. Rather good, if he were to be honest with himself ( ... )

She watched him from the corner of her eye, wondering what his reaction would be to her secretary comment. Truth be told, Lauren was completely one hundred percent sincere in the matter. She'd oddly always wanted to try her hand at being someones assistant. Office work was fun to her, as weird as that was since it could sometimes be boring. But she kind of grew up with it, as her mom sometimes helped her sort things out with her fan base and such, as well as planning a few gigs and making things were in order ( ... )

Well, then. That sounded like the perfect makings of a brilliant Muggle sitcom, didn't it? The serious professor, and his younger, beautiful assistant who was both a comedic delight and a frustrating distraction.

It was too perfect; someone surely had already beat that storyline to death.

Though he wouldn't deny the image in his head was providing quite a bit of amusement. He enjoyed chatting with her, and having her around while he was working would surely make his work more enjoyable. It only made sense, right? Right. So he was determined to usher her in as some sort of lovely assistant (minus sequins), so that he would both finish this task more quickly, and enjoy doing it ( ... )

Ah, yes. It was all true, sadly. Lauren could just picture it now! She was sure she'd seen at least a dozen or so movies and/or television shows where the plot was just that -- a professor and a young student, their worlds colliding in a scandalous affair of sorts. The inappropriate nature of such things was always the appeal, wasn't it? This blonde knew that if she was going to be spending more time with her Potions Professor -- time alone, I might add -- that she would need to be very careful and watch her step ( ... )

It was safe to say that Frederick wasn't the only one who was becoming more endearing by the second; he was quite fond of Lauren, even if it was only the second time that they had spoken out of class. Granted, it wasn't hard for him to talk to someone once they had approached him and gotten him to open up a little, but it just felt different with her ( ... )

((omg, they are INSANELY CUTE!! *dies*))

She thought it was quite different with him as well. One couldn't find many professors like this. Professor York, in her mind at least, seemed to be a rare gem. He was so... down to earth. Or at least from what she could tell. He seemed much more laid back than the others, as most of her other teachers seemed to be walking around with a constant stick up their arses. Oh yeah, she thought it.

So this was why Frederick was so very endearing. A refreshing wind, while those who taught her other classes were all stifling.

If she thought seriously about it, he would be the only reason that she would ever consider going into a field of Potions. Not because she had hidden motives and wanted to get closer to him(thought that might be a teensy little part of it, but shhhh!). No. But because he seemed like the type of role model that she could genuinely get along with and learn from. He was an amazing teacher. He was probably a big factor into why she was good at the subject in the first place ( ... )
