I've been trying really hard not to think about it too much over the weekend, but the following events made it quite impossible:
I met a guy at a colleague's housewarming party who hails from South Carolina. We traded stories of our affection for Athens, Charleston, the Smoky Mountains, and the South in general. After I said, "honestly, people don't give the South enough credit", he gave me a high five.
A friend who has just returned from a month's vacation back home in the US, sat down and said, "I think I want to move back home." "China is great, but home is home."
I finally was able to catch up with my friend, Harita from UGA. We've been playing Gchat-tag for months. Talking to her made me think of those wonderful dinners at Allie's and of course, that crazy Six Flags adventure we had with her, Evan, Allie and Adi during my last semester in school.
And then of course, Evan's back home for his cousin, Amelia's wedding, and also for Thanksgiving. "I wish I was there" is an understatement of how I actually feel. I've also been wanting to visit my nieces. They are growing up way too fast. Michelle is going to lose her chubbiness soon if she's going to follow her sister's footsteps. She can already say "papa mama" at less than 5 months' old!
So yes, I'm filling my time with movies, dinners and errands. But it takes a lot of conscious effort to stop myself from thinking, "I wish I was there."
The infamous "headstack". Taken at Six Flags in the Spring of 2007. Clockwise from top left: Evan, me, Adi, Harita, Allie.
