My "Nashville" 1x14 Recap

Feb 28, 2013 05:44

Apologies if any lyrics are wrong.

At the mall, Juliette is spending her money with her mom, Emily and Bo. Emily suggests buying Deacon a birthday gift. Jolene suggests a party. Juliette insults everyone in the vicinity and then runs with the idea.

Rayna, quite rightly, comes over to Teddy’s office to guilt trip him about sleeping with Peggy. Then tells him to keep Peggy away from the kids. He agrees. I don’t believe his lying self but it’s sort of satisfying.

At Scarlett’s house, she suggests doing legal things to Jason. He talks about his enemies. Then he and Gunnar put on dorky hats. Apparently, this is necessary to explain how they used to bag groceries.

Rayna shows up at Tandy’s house to tell her that Teddy is divorcing her to be with Peggy. Then she says she doesn’t want to talk to her. Yeah, Rayna because you go all the way to someone’s house not to interact with them. Tandy won’t take no for an answer and decides to run errands with Rayna.

At Juliette’s place, the party planning is going well. Juliette busts out some Deacon knowledge by knowing that he hates parties and has a niece named Scarlett. Yet, she doesn’t know his age? Jolene’s addiction counselor comes in for a family session. Juliette puts it off. I know this shows she’s not ready to deal with things but on the other hand, I would love to see what kind of schemes Juliette could cook up for Scarlett. Here is a picture of the counselor:

At the supermarket, Tandy wonders if Rayna has started banging Deacon yet. Rayna is putting that off until the girls are okay. Given their divorce is in the tabloids, I think the girls are the opposite of okay.

At Scarlett’s place, she’s cleaning her way through writer’s block (the way she cleaned through her rape attempt and her breakup). She and Gunnar happen upon Jason’s gun. Gunnar leaves to confront his brother after taking the bullets out of the gun. Scarlett seems to be under the impression that one of them is going to kill the other but doesn’t follow him. That’s great dedication.

At the store, tabloids have published stories about Rayna and Teddy’s divorce, implying that both were cheating. Everyone in the store looks at Rayna (though none approaches her). Rayna leaves with the kids while Tandy buys the groceries and all the tabloids.

At Rayna’s house, Maddie won’t believe that her mom is not having affairs. After Deacon makes contact, Rayna decides to explain things to him. Yes, that will convince Maddie that you’re not sleeping with him.

Tandy: “Wow, Deacon texts now?”

At a bridge, Jason tells Gunnar he needs the gun in case someone tries to murder him. Gunnar throws the gun in the lake. Jason decides to make the situation better by roughly shaking him and insisting that his little brother owes him. No wonder he needs a gun. He certainly can’t talk his way out of trouble.

At Scarlett’s house, Juliette rolls up in her car while Scarlett is outside. After Emily instructs Scarlett not to be afraid of Juliette, Juliette gets Scarlett to agree to get Deacon to his surprise party. Scarlett and Gunnar will even get to perform. Scarlett is adorably charmed as Juliette’s car speeds away without another word. Deacon’s favorite movie is “Old Yeller” and he watches it on VHS on his birthday. More angst is just what that man needs. And again, how old is he?

At a diner, Coleman is being a sponsor to Deacon. Deacon is hurt about finding out about the divorce like everyone else. He’s also hurt by the lack of “Old Yeller” appreciation. Is there nothing you don’t angst about, sir?

At Rayna’s place, a publicist wants to know about all the dudes that Rayna is banging. Then she forbids Rayna from going to Deacon’s birthday party that Bucky just told her about. Then she called Rayna madam. I’m pretty sure when the scene ended, Rayna just up and killed the lady.

At Juliette’s place, she sings the song, “We Are Water” by Patty Griffin. The lyrics are as follows:

My friend, my friend, you are traveling
So many secrets are unraveling
Some other picture's coming into view
I seen the water washing over you
And the water's speaking now, it speaks your name
I hear it talking to me
Sometimes when it rains
Telling me a story of joy or pain
But I've got no regrets baby, I've got no shame
'Cause we are water
We flow and flow
I feel you pouring through
Every inch of my soul and
I really must tell you this
Baby, before you go
We are water
We flow and flow
I am a river baby,
I've got plenty of time
I don't know where I'm going
I'm just following the lines
There's just no telling where this river will flow
I got no choice in the matter, baby,
I just go where it goes
I'm making my bed tonight
Right under this cloud
Sometimes the lightening's so frightening
Sometimes the thunder's so loud
Still, I know this tide is always kissing my heels
Sometimes I think I'm drowning in all these things that I feel
And we are water
We flow and flow
I feel you pouring through
Every inch of my soul and
I really must tell you this
Baby, before you go
We are water
We are water
We are water
We flow and flow
Out on the beach today, I did not find
One single footstep that we left behind
So I went swimming in the deep blue sea
And I could feel that water all around me
'Cause we are water
We flow and flow
I feel you pouring through
Every inch of my soul and
I really must tell you this
Baby, before you go
We are water, we are water
We are water, we are water
We are water, we are water
We are water
We flow and flow
We flow and flow

Juliette is interrupted by the addiction counselor creeping in and telling her to get involved in her mom’s life and invite her to parties. Emily breaks the tension by revealing Rayna’s divorce, making Juliette hopeful that Rayna won’t show. This kind of thing would distract her from having a junky and a creeper in her house.

At his office, Teddy the idiot promises he will not be away from Peggy. I know I shouldn’t blame him since Rayna is doing the same thing but Deacon and Liam are actually her coworkers.

At Maddie and Daphne’s ballet class, a woman named Jane approaches Tandy and Rayna to be all in on the gossip. Tandy and Rayna gossip about her the second she leaves which I kind of love. Maddie is still giving Rayna the cold shoulder but there’s no time to think about that because paparazzi have stormed all over them. Remember the one guy paparazzi from when Juliette was in the club? Priceless.

At a music store, Avery is buying a $25,000 guitar. Yeah, he’s gonna blow through that 100K quick. The person selling it to him happens to compliment him on being a sellout as it has made him money. Watty White comes in. After Avery reminds Watty who he is, he immediately asks for advice about Domino. Watty is vague.

At Rayna’s place, she writes a song and plans to lay low until the scandal is over. I guess it’s a good thing this came during her six week break. Tandy offers to pick up the girls and change Rayna’s phone number. What are sister’s for? Seriously, people with sisters might be getting a rip off if this is what they’re actually for.

At Deacon’s house, he’s already watching “Old Yeller” with popcorn. Scarlett comes by and earns my eternal love by handing him a cupcake, then taking it back, tearing the bottom of it off and placing it on the top like a cupcake sandwich. She then lures him to the Bluebird by reminding him that he never saw her perform before. I can’t even appreciate how good she is at lying (and how scary that is) because I just love that cupcake thing too much.

At home, Rayna finds that Teddy has done a press conference denying both he and Rayna ever cheated. He also announces that Peggy will be his financial advisor. He’s only been a politician for like five minutes and he’s already in a high profile affair. Lamar comes by and apologizes. He thought giving Teddy something to do would fix the marriage and advises Rayna to fight and forget everyone else.

So, Deacon’s party at The Bluebird Cafe. Here’s some of the real life music stars in attendance: Pam Tillis, Kate York, Vince Gill, Dan Auerbach, and Kip Moore. Also, the real bartender from the real Bluebird. Jason tried to contact Gunnar eventually but Gunnar was unreceptive. Fair enough honestly. The whole place is packed. Everyone is sending Deacon love. Gunnar and Scarlett perform and wow everyone including Juliette. Avery is on the outside looking in at all he’s missing. The Bluebird was Deacon’s first open mic.

At Rayna’s place, Rayna gets Watty to come over and listen to her new song. I’m sure this required a whole scene.

At Teddy’s office, Teddy has found his balls all of a sudden and refuses to bow to Lamar. All Lamar does is make cracks about his failed marriage and not doing much about the fact that he no longer has political favors.

Back at the Bluebird, Watty walks Rayna through the paparazzi and everyone inside is kind to her except for Juliette who won’t let her sing. It’s crazy how she can be nice to everyone in a room but Rayna. There’s backstory, right? Gunnar gets found by the police. This is what happens when you don’t answer your brother calls. Brothers < sisters. Deacon thanks everyone for showing up but doesn’t want it to happen again. Someone hands everyone a glass of bubbly and you can bet Jolene drinks it. Cut to Jolene wasted. Juliette doesn’t want to be the one to take her home until Deacon tries to leave the party to do it. Juliette is disappointed not to sing at the Bluebird.

Peggy comes to have sex with Teddy in his office. All he had to do was have an affair and his life improved. Lucky him.

At the Bluebird, Rayna talks about all Deacon has done for her and how they go way back. She sings a song called, “Stronger Than Me,” with Watty White on guitar and Kate York and Pam Tillis singing backup. What an honor that must be for them. The lyrics are as follows:

Oh, here I go again
Walking the line killing time between my sins
Oh, why do I come here?
The ending is still the same
I’m bring back old tears
I act like I don’t know
Where this road will go
Pour me something stronger, pour me something straight
All these crooked voices, make them go away
I can barely stand up
I can hardly breathe
Pour me something stronger than me
Pour me something stronger than me
Sunrise hurts as much as you
You always come up when I don’t want you to
Oh, I can still hear you say
That you and I will both be off this way
These things that I run to
What I put my heart through
Pour me something stronger, pour me something straight
All these crooked voices, make them go away
I can barely stand up
I can hardly breathe
Pour me something stronger than me
Pour me something stronger than me
Pour me something stronger than me
Pour me something stronger
Pour me something dark.
Pour it up so high so I can’t feel my heart.
I can barely stand up.
I can hardly breathe.
Pour me something stronger than me.
Pour me something stronger than me.

During the song, Raycon stare at each other like they’re all alone in the room. It’s like “No One Will Ever Love You” but maybe more intense. Juliette puts her mom to bed. Jolene apologizes for ruining Juliette’s ninth birthday party. Elsewhere, Gunnar is brought to the morgue to identify his brother’s dead body. What enemies did Jason have? Did the clerk he robbed come and find him? To get serious, this is some heavy stuff. Gunnar really believed he was helping his brother by throwing his gun away. He really thought it was his right not to answer his call this time and to kick him out. However, if he made one choice differently, his brother might still be alive.

The addiction counselor comes over to Juliette’s place. He asks if Juliette wants to talk since Jolene is asleep. When Juliette was nine she was about to have her first birthday party at an ice cream parlor. Her mother blew the party money on drugs so Juliette again didn’t have a birthday party. Later that night, Juliette saw her mom asleep with a lit cigarette about to burn their home down. Juliette was about to leave her but saved her instead. She wished her mother died. The addiction counselor wants to help them. If he fails he can at least write a tell all book.

At the Bluebird Café, Rayna apologizes to Deacon for not telling him about the divorce. She wants to do right by him. He compliments her song. I guess he’s over the Liam thing, then?

At the guitar store, Avery returns the guitar. I guess to show he grew a brain? Or maybe he realized he’s not all that.

At Deacon’s house, Emily is there waiting for him with a gift from Juliette. Deacon thanks Emily for all her party planning. Juliette gave Deacon a dog as a gift.

At Teddy’s office, Coleman comes by and declares himself Team Rayna. You and the rest of the world, buddy. However, Teddy does get a bit more charming as the scene goes on. He apologizes for all he’s done and making the deal with the devil. He asks Coleman to be his deputy mayor. Coleman accepts. If Teddy had been this guy all along, maybe Rayna would not have left him. Oh sweet irony. Still, he’s a lying liar who lies and he bangs suicidal chicks in his office so…

At Scarlett’s place, Gunnar comes home. He’s been missing for a day. He tells Scarlett about his brother being beaten to death. He blames himself. Instead of Scarlett telling him to blame the criminals, she bangs him. To her credit, he probably prefers that. But their first time is grief sex?

Tell me your thoughts if you have any about the episode.
