Congrats to Stephen Amell a.k.a. Green Arrow on his recent marriage.
We open on a firefighter putting out a fire. Sounds normal but then some other firefighter lights him up with some fluid (plus fire of course) until he burns up. I feel like this will end up on someone’s annual performance review.
At the lair, Ollie is doing the mandatory shirtless workout except he’s not so great at it anymore because he’s having stressful flashbacks of the Dark Archer. This is especially horrible for him given flashbacks are his favorite hobby. He still looks great (and scarred). Diggle comes in and wants to get back to the little brown book. Ollie isn’t feeling it because a) he’s not performing so well right now and b) Walter is dead probably. Ollie has been looking for him and can’t find him. So, Ollie just not finding someone is grounds for death? Why do we even have Felicity?
Back on the island, we see a repeat of that flashback where Ollie’s Mentor got captured.
At CNRI, Laurel and her BFF Jo are talking about what a great day Jo is having when Laurel’s dad and a firefighter swing by. It turns out Jo’s brother Danny is the guy who got burned in the opening. That’s a rough way to open up your character, girl. Laurel comforts her.
At Ollie’s place, Ollie goes to Momma Moira and offers her some Big Belly Burger and family time. It may have worked in the past but this feels like a bigger obstacle, Ollie.
Downstairs, Ollie tries to update his movie knowledge. Thea tells a sweet story about how Walter helped Momma Moira through a rough time by putting the mack on. Thea hopes Walter ran out on the family and neglected to talk to them again rather than considering he might really be dead. Ollie plays along and then listens to a news lady talking about the awesome green arrow vigilante to make himself feel better.
At Laurel’s place, Laurel comes home to Tommy who wants a drawer in her apartment. Laurel’s response: LOL. Her crushing his heart is interrupted by Jo. Jo’s brother was doused in turpentine (which was not in the building) and burned hotter than the whole burning building. It’s a very sloppy murder and Laurel is forced to take notice.
Laurel reports this to her dad who can do nothing because the Fire Marshall handles these things. Why was Quentin even there when her friend found out then? Anyway, some tech guy happens by with the vigilante phone and Laurel promptly swipes it and calls Arrow. It’s a good thing Quentin decided to leave it hanging out on his desk. Make it a little hard for her, dude!
Arrow goes to see Laurel who immediately starts drilling him (and not in the fun way). She finally gets around to mentioning her friend’s case. She’s also pretty insensitive to him when he makes it quite obvious she hurt his feelings. Were this anyone other than Ollie that case would not get done.
At the lair, Ollie tells Diggle about the case. Diggle agrees to look into it but is surprised when Ollie suggests giving the info to the police. Diggle apparently wants Ollie back on the horse so he can tell him to slow down. This is the least sense Diggle has ever made but he just joined the shirtless club so we’ll look past it. Ollie is saved by hearing noise from upstairs.
Upstairs, Tommy has gotten the contractor to up his progress. He also suggested throwing a firehouse fundraiser there at the building. Ollie loves the idea. He loves a good scoop.
At CNRI, Laurel tries to convince Jo to take a sick day and even better reminds her that Laurel is not a role model. You got that right. Then Detective Lance shows up and yells at Laurel a ton for stealing evidence. Maybe you shouldn’t have just left it on your desk then?
At Ollie’s house, Ollie comes home and finds Momma Moira, Thea and a guy getting yelled at by Momma Moira. After he leaves, Momma Moira says she’s supposed to be the new head of Queen Consolidated in Walter’s absence but she doesn’t want to. Ollie encourages to do it but he doesn’t ask with a Big Belly Burger so she says no. Diggle pulls him away to let him know the same truck was found at the deaths of two separate firefighters. He wants Ollie to gear up. Ollie is resistant but Diggle lets him know people might die if he says no. Ollie uses a flashback to make him feel better.
Back on the island, after Ollie got away from the guys who got his mentor, he tried to build a fire. It just led his enemies to him and he had to go into hiding again. Poor Still- Getting- Traumatized- Ollie.
At another fire, Arrow does some gymnastics in his entrance with enough time to see another firefighter die. The murdering firefighter has a firefly tattoo on his scarred hand and was kind enough to let Ollie live, even if it was just to see his dramatic exit. See, there are advantages to becoming a pathetic fighter: pity. Fun fact: Firefly was a comic book villain who was a pyromaniac. I think this show offers a spin.
Back on the island, instead of waiting for a man with a gun to find him, Ollie attacked the man with the gun. Things did not go his way and he ended up falling in a lake. As you already know, he survived. The other guy did not fare as well.
At the lair, Arrow calls Laurel and lets her know everything including everyone at a particular fire station has that firefly tattoo. It’s at her discretion and she lies to Tommy about it. That’s healthy for a relationship. After a mini-scuffle with Diggle, we find out that Ollie is physically fine (yeah he is) but the dark archer has given him a case of the yips. Instead of dealing with that, he leaves. Again, healthy.
At the firehouse, Ollie is there checking the guest list for the event. He runs into Laurel who says she won’t give Tommy a drawer unless she thinks he’s gonna put a ring on it someday. This method has clearly worked so well for you in the past. Laurel tries interrogating the fire chief. Three of eight firefighters have died in the last six weeks. One, Garfield Linz, died two years ago in the Nordel building. Tons of people died including one of the firefighters because of a substandard building. Ollie is there for part of this talk. He lets Laurel walk down the street and then takes her call as Arrow to let her know he is going to handle it. There’s our guy!
Back on the island, the guy Ollie was fighting died on the rocks. Victory!
At Ollie’s place, Thea gives Momma Moira a speech about getting off her butt and acting like a parent. Because it’s Thea, this speech is mean and also ironic because she hates when Ollie acts like a parent.
At the lair, Diggle apologizes for their confusing argument. Ollie admits that now he’s scared to go out there because all his friends and family would miss him if he was gone. Diggle thinks this could be a powerful motivator. Ollie radically changes the subject by saying he thinks dead Garfield Linz is the killer.
Tommy: “You know, ironically, if we get any more people in here we’re going to violate the fire code.”
At Queen Industries (this is what we’ll call the top of Ollie’s lair until he names his club), the fundraiser is in full swing. Laurel meets up with Tommy who is of course cool about the drawer thing because he’s dreamy like that. Ollie brings Laurel over to the fire chief and interrogates the guy even though he let Laurel think he had no idea what she was talking about earlier. Anyway, Garfield was in the Nordel building and his team stayed outside instead of helping him out. Seconds after Ollie brings everyone up to speed about this, Garfield shows up and torches the place, giving Ollie and Laurel and everyone but the chief a chance to run. Everyone runs. Laurel and Tommy meet up and fret over Ollie staying behind but do nothing about it. Green Arrow stops Garfield from getting revenge but doesn’t stop him from killing himself. He is sad because he tried to give the guy a second chance. I am fond of that habit of his. I’m less fond of the murder.
The same reporter who was talking up the Green Arrow earlier, calls him a hero. Also, at Ollie’s place, Momma Moira has decided to become chairman after Thea’s pep talk. Thea has a problem with this. Anyone feel like she’s just a complainer?
At CNRI, Jo is going on leave. Was this whole plotline just writing Jo off the show temporarily? She gives Laurel her brother’s badge to give to Green Arrow as a thank you. She appreciates him. She passes by Detective Lance on her way out and he says something nice. He also apologizes to Laurel and lets her keep the phone. Laurel was going to let her dad keep it at one point, so does that mean she was planning on pocketing Danny’s medal? I would love to see a Laurel = kleptomaniac story.
At the police station, a conversation between Detective Lance and the tech guy reveals Detective Lance bugged the phone to listen to his daughter’s conversations with Green Arrow. So, he faked being mad and fake apologized to make this happen? Feels like a little too much effort. He and Laurel do love their family arguments though.
Back on the island, Ollie traded clothes with the dead soldier and sort of buried him under some leaves. Then he took his supplies including keys, a map and some other stuff. It was then Ollie learned the many profits of murder.
Diggle finds Ollie in the lair. In some good news, the fire did not spread downstairs. In better news Ollie is back in the game!
Tell me your thoughts if you have any.
