My "Nashville" 1x09 Recap

Jan 10, 2013 01:53

Apologize if I got the lyrics wrong. I did my best.

We open with Rayna recording her part in “Wrong Song” with Bucky, Liam and Glenn. She seems pretty well set with her side of the song but Juliette is her usual unprofessional self. In other words, she’s absent.

We cut to a limo where Sean and Juliette just had sex, post wedding. Sean wants to tell their families about the wedding but Juliette would rather run off to record with Rayna. This would normally be an omen but Sean just had sex for the first time so he’s on cloud 9. He magically wasn’t a bad lay either which should keep Juliette from seeing it for the time being.

Scarlett and Avery are trying to write songs at work since apparently they need three more ASAP. Except Gunnar isn’t really into it. Scarlett and Gunnar exchange words and Scarlett is off with a drive by insult from Hailey. The happiest place on Earth, this place is not.

Avery and Domino are at some swanky party. Avery mentions he wants to play one last gig with his band and tell them in person that they are fired. Domino wants Avery to be a dick and be a servant. Turning someone into a horrible person to prove you have power always works well for everyone, see: Cora/Regina on OUAT.

Juliette is so late for recording that Liam leaves. Apparently, he would’ve waited for a real rocker but Juliette ain’t it. Rayna could not care less which is great. She knows they are touring together and will be gone on Sunday.

Deacon: “You want me to jump around and make faces?”

At a Revel Kings concert, Deacon is apparently having trouble being hardcore on stage. Give the guy a break. All he’s had to do was look longingly across the stage for twenty years. A woman named Carmen Gonzalez is there to interview them and based on the kiss she lays on Deacon, they have some history.

Juliette finally shows up at the studio and announces she was busy getting married. Glenn is annoyed as heck but she did get a prenup. Rayna stops smirking long enough to kick the guys out of the room. Rayna congratulates Juliette and after they trade a few barbs, Rayna makes it clear she wants the tour to start on Sunday.

Juliette comes home to find Sean told his parents who are understandably pissed. Momma B (standing for Bear, Bitch and Butler) swings into damage control mode. She wants a church wedding with close family and friends before the elopement is leaked. Juliette seems a little shaken and tries to get out of it by mentioning her tour on Sunday. The wedding is set for Saturday.

At Rayna’s house, Rayna lays the tour out for Teddy as if all is well. Teddy is irked but that’s nothing compared to when Rayna stutters out that she’s taking the girls for five months. Things get threatening fast which is undercut by Teddy kind of slowly walking out the door. It feels like he works so hard to be interesting and just has trouble getting there.

Juliette shows a little growth by asking for the first time in her whole career if a dress is too flashy for her to wear. Sean gets annoyed when he realizes he won’t see her for two months. Juliette sends her assistant and Glenn out. When Sean wants to talk things out like a normal person, Juliette avoids it by making out with him (like she avoids all problems). She tells him they can sext and sends him on his merry way. She does have a point about them not being like normal couples but even he notices she doesn’t want to talk to him about anything ever.

Teddy is in his campaign office feeling sad. Tandy comes in and tries to make him feel better about losing one friend and driving another to suicide. Teddy is not comforted obviously and mentions Rayna’s plans to leave him to go on tour with the kids. Tandy is horrified because she is an awful sister I guess.

Carmen blows off the lead members of the band to flirt with Deacon and interview him. She wants to know why he never settled down and there’s some mention of a Vince somebody. It’s a nice history building moment. Very “the Jenna thing.”

Deacon: “Me and happy. We don’t get along too good.”

At the studio, Liam tells Rayna touring will kill her career. Oh, is that how it works? He does make a good point when he mentions how much effort she put into doing an album with him and now she’s not doing it to go on tour. Rayna somehow pacifies him by explaining that she does want to do an album with him once she’s finished running away from all her loved ones.

Avery meets up with his friends. He told them he was getting a record deal but forgot to mention they are not a part of it until now. One of his friends almost attacks him but doesn’t. Given they have all been friends for so long, it’s surprising no one knows he a douche.

Juliette stops texting at a church long enough to give out some sad wedding details. Sean’s sister will be one of her bridesmaids along with her assistant, Emily. Glenn will walk her down the aisle. She hasn’t told her mother about it. Juliette seems happy to have wormed her way into Sean’s family. Momma B is quick to make her hate that decision. Oh family.

Avery swings by Scarlett’s place. She does a good job telling him off at first. However, he puts her face in proximity with his face and they end up getting it on. Scarlett makes such bad decisions when dudes get close to her face.

At a photoshoot, Deacon is already getting flack from his bandmates for stealing their thunder. He hears from Carmen about the Juliette/Rayna tour and instantly is all about it. Looks like Liam is not the only one who wanted to be in a Juliette/Rayna sandwich.

Juliette is somewhere rehearsing with her ethnically diverse band. She sings “Boys & Buses” from the pilot. Sean shows up and she kisses him. Then he drops the knowledge that he arranged for a meeting with them and her mom. Juliette is obviously startled but doesn’t want Sean to know she’s a liar who lies so she says she’ll meet with her mom alone first.

Scarlett and Avery had sex on the couch and all seems well to Avery. That is until Scarlett learns he threw his bandmates under the bus. She calls him selfish and hurtful and storms off. She did lose a bit of a power position walking away in nothing but a blanket. Clare Bowen who plays Scarlett tweeted about this. She says Scarlett is still learning and she was “blinded by love and great hair.” Hee!

Juliette actually does show up to meet her mother with coffee. She’s even nice long enough to brag about her “engagement.” When Jolene is not on drugs, she is damn near clairvoyant because she sees the marriage for what it is and tells Juliette to back out because it will not fix her. Juliette is not ready for this wisdom and storms off.

At the Bluebird, JT shows up so Scarlett can return some of his stuff. They joke about starting a band called Avery’s Exes when Scarlett decides she will sing with the band so they don’t have to cancel their last show. Very altruistic but I don’t think she’ll be crying black mascara tears if it bothers Avery and Gunnar tons.

At South Circle Music, Hailey comes in and true to TV formula starts pimping the supercouple Gunnar/Scarlett for a “business reason” when it’s how writers show the audience what pairing to root for.

Rayna shows up at the campaign office and closes the door, leaving her alone with Teddy and Lamar. In a surprisingly reveal, she tattles Lamar’s threat to Teddy who flips the hell out. It turns out that Teddy has always known Maddie is not his but he loves her like his own anyway and will rip Lamar apart if he hurts Maddie. Of course, Teddy is not at all threatening but A for effort.

Deacon has just finished a show with the Revel Kings and has finally pleased them. He even gets a night with Carmen for his troubles. The most interesting thing in this scene is that he has not signed with them and seems to be having some issues with it.

At The 5 Spot, Scarlett performs “Twist Of Barbwire” from a previous episode. Her voice seems a little odd but it could be the live performance element. The crowd loves her and JT offers her a permanent position as the lead singer. Scarlett is troubled but also pleased.

At Juliette’s place, she lies to Sean that everything went great with her mom. She wants to go an adventure again to avoid talking but Sean actually has a life and says no. She snuggles unhappily onto his chest and when he says “I love you,” she can only say “me too.” Aww, wedded bliss.

At a recording studio, Avery does not love what Domino is doing to his music but is playing along like he does like a good little puppy. JT sends him a video of Scarlett performing his songs and he is none too pleased. If he doesn’t like his own music, I doubt very much Avery will like Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” right now.

Deacon had sex with Carmen to avoid talking to her. He and Juliette have so much in common! Anyway, she brings up that Vince had a car accident 14 years ago and he and Deacon were drinking. Deacon responds to that claim with more sex. Classic Deacon/Juliette behavior.

At Rayna’s house, Teddy is going off to sleep in another room. Rayna and Teddy admit that they still do love each other but they haven’t been happy in a long time. The tour will give them time to figure things out. They will share the kids with Teddy having primary custody while she’s on the road. Teddy is happy with this and says he wants to work things out. Then he goes off to sleep on the couch or a guest room. Very sad. Did anyone get the feeling that Rayna was planning on saying she loved him but wasn’t in love with him? Just me? Okay.

Glenn in his tux greets Juliette in her wedding dress and tells her she looks beautiful and offers to ride to the church with her. It is almost proud papa and Juliette loves it but asks to ride alone for a grand entrance. Sean sends over a family heirloom for her to wear to the wedding. Juliette likes that even more. Good to know she still has the same priorities.

At South Circle Music, Scarlett comes back and sings with Gunnar as Hailey watches. They sing a song called, “Change Your Mind.” The lyrics are as follows:

When you wake up wanting me
And you can’t go back to sleep
Change your mind
When you wake up all alone
And you’re reaching for the phone
Change your mind
Keep on going ‘til you’re gone
Even when you think it’s wrong
When you look back in regret
A moment that you lapsed
Change your mind
Baby don’t come back this time
Don’t want to have to say goodbye
All over again
So, if you think there’s still a chance to make it right
And I’m the only one you want tonight
Change your mind
Change your mind
And the early morning hangs
When my kiss is all you crave
Let go
‘Cause I don’t want to do that dance
The push and pull
One last chance
When I already know
I know you’ll just promise me forever
And you’ll take it back
Just like that
Say that you can’t live without me
Then you’ll change your mind
Say baby don’t come back this time
Don’t want to have to say goodbye
All over again
So, if you think there’s still a chance to make it right
Change your mind
Change your mind
Change your mind

As they sing, Deacon obsesses and feels bad about himself while Carmen secretly watches in his hotel room. Rayna says bye to her family and boards a tour bus. Everyone waits at the church for Juliette who has pulled a runaway bride and gone on a plane, leaving the heirloom behind. Um, you’re already married, honey.

Tell me your thoughts if you have any.
