-Chapter One-

A lot had changed since he lost his wife. A woman whom he loved dearly and had given him a beautiful daughter who looks so much like her. She was the one that could make him opened up himself to. The one he had fought for, risking his relationship with his parents and almost breaking his friendship with his best friend. He had disobeyed his father’s wish and married her. He knew he had disappointed his parents as well as broken his best friend’s heart, but he did that in the name of love.

It’s been hard for him since then, trying to persuade them to accept his marriage but they were too hurt to learn the fact that she was their daughter in law. It was until the news of her pregnancy he earned his parents’ acceptance. He was so happy he thought his life was at easy when he got his parents’ blessing. Seeing the bright smile of his wife and a bundle full of happiness in her arms made him forget someone who he had hurt most. Maybe it was karma he had happiness above his friend’s sadness that earned him lost his wife.

It was a clouded day when his wife died of an accident and he found himself standing on his wife’s ground. At that time, he wished to die but his daughter had reached her little arms at him, demanding to be held, that he found the strength that life must goes on.

“This is new document you’ve asked, sir.”

A deep voice distracted his thought. He looked up at his personal assistant who was sliding the document onto his desk. He nodded and said thank you as the other man bowed slightly before he took a leave.

It was what Jung Yunho had been working towards since he first became the president of South Korea. Forty-eight months had gone since he no longer has a wife, a year that he had to accept a very vital position he got from winning over his rivals.

Since deciding to dabbling in politics and announced as a candidate a year ago, various opinion polls favor his victory, since in his speech, he promised to rescue the economy, bringing together people who are still divided and achieve national unity. And after ten years of embracing liberalism, South Korea tempted to be more conservative, especially in terms of its relationship with North Korea.

And as the result, he won with 20 percent difference in votes from his rivals.

All those years, although he’d not successfully get all of the Aristocrats’s hearts, but at least, he had got the society’s hearts and approval. He was competent, honest, intelligent, and not to mention, good looking. He wanted to be one of the very few greats who attribute success to the rest, like his father had already been one. He was always reminding by his father’s word “You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself. Leaders do not command excellence, they build excellence. Excellence is “being all you can be” within the bounds of doing what is right for your people.” and he had, so far, been very pleased by how he managed his government.

He scanned the document, reading every words carefully. It was a new report from Admiral Jung, Chief of South Korea’s Naval. A frown created in his eyebrows further and further his mind took the content.

A torpedo was fired last night, which sank our warship, killing 46 sailors in the incident. We express "action alert" following the results of a multinational investigation that mention North Korea fired a missile that sank our Cheonan warships. But they (North Korea), which reacted quickly, declaring the results of the investigation was far-fetched and warned it would trigger a war. They also refused to be involved in the incident.

When he finished reading it, he threw the document harshly and sliding down in his chair. It was the worst accident happen during his reign.

And he knew. He knew that he was faced with a big problem, a very big one that his country was in a possibility of having a war.

"Appa!"

A cheerful voice passed his ear and he walked backward; almost falling when he felt someone jumped onto him and a pair of arms cycled around his neck but he successfully steady himself. He laughed lightly and held his daughter tightly in his arms, feeling glad he had come home. His daughter always made him thought of nothing but her, despite his throbbing headache thinking about the country, she has an ability to make him happy and he was thankful of that.

“Welcome home Appa.” Ji Yool pressed her lips against her father’s cheek and grinned widely.

“How is your day Ji Yoolie?” Yunho asked as he pulled her slightly so he could see her bright face. He placed his palm on Ji Yool’s forehead and sighed in relief when he felt his daughter’s heat was normal again. “Are you feeling better?”

“Un!” Ji Yool nodded. “I felt better after I had taken the medicine.”

“You had taken the medicine?” Yunho asked in surprise. He knew his daughter didn’t like medicine, especially tablet; since she would always throw up when she took one. She was always stubborn when she was sick, so much like him when he was a child as his mother had told him.

“You were so stubborn and refused to take one when I fed you yesterday.”

“It’s because Uncle Jaejoong came and baked me a cake.” Ji Yool told him eagerly.

It was then Yunho noticed another man’s presence. Jaejoong had been standing behind his daughter all along but Yunho was too caught up with Ji Yool that he hadn’t noticed the way Jaejoong stood up and looked at him.

Yunho stared at Jaejoong. He was surprise Jaejoong could make his daughter ate her medicine when he himself couldn’t make her do it. He knew Jaejoong loved children but this was Ji Yool. He thought after what had happened years ago, Jaejoong would hate him and worst, hate his daughter but he was wrong. Jaejoong and Ji Yool had been close ever since she was in her mother’s womb.

“I secretly put the tablet inside her cake.” Jaejoong’s deep yet soft voice brought him back to the earth. “She didn’t notice it until I told her once she’s finished.”

Yunho nodded and smiled. “Thank you. Let’s go inside.”

They made their way to the living room. Jaejoong watched as Yunho walked to the cushion and leaned down. And Ji Yool jumped, landing on the soft cushion.

“I think it’s time for me to go.” Jaejoong said as he grabbed his coat.

“Why don’t you eat dinner with us?” Ji Yool suggested. She clearly didn’t want Jaejoong to leave so early. She likes Jaejoong’s presence. He was gentle, always giving her a feeling of a mother she has never got since she was four.

“But I-“

“Yes. Would you like to eat dinner with us?” Yunho asked with his deep voice as he looked at Jaejoong. It was his way of thank you, he thought, because the other man had accompanied his daughter.

Jaejoong opened his mouth to say something but the words never let out. He felt butterfly in his stomach. The way Yunho asked him with that voice, making Jaejoong smiled and nodded happily.

That night, their dinner was full of joy. Ji Yool’s voice was the loudest as she likes to talk about her school and everything. It was full of laughter when she made a joke and Jaejoong face-palmed himself when she told them that Junsu was the one who teaches her that joke. A younger brother of him who always makes joke about anything and he called it Junsu’s Gag, a foreigner words he learned when he was in Japan.

The clock showed 9 pm when Yunho tucked Ji Yool to the bed. He tugged her blanket to cover her small body and kissed the little girl on the nose before walking silently to the door and smiled when he saw Jaejoong leaning against the door frame, one hand holding the door ajar.

“Is she asleep now?”

“Yes.” Yunho countered as he pulled the doorknob and decided to leave it ajar, just in case Ji Yool woke up and found that he was not there.

“I have to go.” Jaejoong said as he looked down to his watch.

“Wanna have a cup of coffee before you leave?”

Jaejoong seemed to pounder for a while before he nodded and Yunho smiled warmly. It was their daily habits whenever Jaejoong came to visit.

They weren’t as close as before but the two of them now taking the time to spend time together whenever Yunho wasn’t busy with his job. This seemed please Jaejoong to no end, making Yunho felt less guilty, as the auburn haired man had long since been looking for the perfect way to spend time with him.

“You threw a snow ball to me!” Yunho said laughing. “But there was a stone inside it. It really hurt.” He touched his chest with his hand, mocking a hurt expression in his face as he remembered the moment when they were children and played a snowball in the yard of his house.

“I intentionally threw it to you! I knew there was a stone.” Jaejoong confessed and chuckled, one hand went to his mouth to cover it up.

“No wonder.” Yunho said and they busted out laughing.

After calmed down, Jaejoong’s throat felt dry so he stirred his coffee and brought it near his lips, taking a sip while looking at Yunho’s smiling face. It was such a pleasant thing. He was glad Yunho was smiling again after he had tried to bring Yunho’s old self back.

“Do you remember?” Jaejoong suddenly said and when Yunho raised his eyebrows at him, he continued. “When we’re a child, we cut our fingers and exchanged blood.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes. Don’t you remember? You said we will always be together.” Jaejoong smiled at him but when Yunho furrowed his brows and looked at him in puzzlement, his smiled slowly fade away. “You don’t remember?”

Yunho laughed uneasily. “We have so many memories together so, um....”

Jaejoong suddenly felt a pang in his heart but he tried not to show that feeling. He didn’t want their moment was ruined by it. He smiled sadly and whispered so softly he thought Yunho wouldn’t hear it. “As long as one of us remembers it…”

Yunho wanted to slap his head hearing Jaejoong’s whispered and bang his forehead into the wall seeing Jaejoong’s sulk. “Hey! Don’t be sulking.” he reached Jaejoong’s face and pinched the auburn man’s cheek, trying to lighten up the other’s mood. “Chubby.” He said playfully.

“Am not!” Jaejoong protested as he slapped Yunho’s hand away softly but Yunho’s hand always coming to his face, pinching both of his cheeks lightly. Jaejoong pulled his hand and this time, he pinched the president’s cheek, making Yunho yelped and tightened his pinch on Jaejoong’s cheek. And in the instant, Yunho once again had successfully soothed his pain away as they both were laughing at their own childish acts.

The next day, Yunho woke up a bit early than usual. He’s been thinking about the solution of his problem, making him couldn’t sleep well. He sighed and took the time to call his advisor, asking him to come to his office. He planned to call him yesterday but Jaejoong’s presence had made him forget about it. He thought about Jaejoong. The other man had changed, he had matured. He wasn’t the shy and fragile boy anymore. He had turned into a strong but yet warm man. Thinking about it reminds him of their memory together since childhood. They had been so close, always sleeping together and all. Jaejoong seemed to look up at him and somehow it made him feel proud of himself. But everything had changed since he married.

He let out a deep sighed. He headed to the bathroom and took a long shower since he wasn’t in such a hurry. He made himself presentable before he went to his daughter’s room and woke her up. Once she opened her eyes, she kissed his cheek, giggling all the way to the bathroom. She was happy because she finally could go to school again after being absent for two days due to her illness.

They went to the kitchen and were greeted with a mount of food. Apparently, the chief had made them their favourite foods. They ate breakfast before he dropped his daughter to school.

“Don’t be a naughty girl okay Ji Yoolie?” Yunho said as he caressed her hair. “Be a good girl that Appa proud of.”

“Un!” Ji Yool nodded as she grinned. She then kissed Yunho’s cheek before a driver opened the car door for her and she hopped off the car.

Yunho waved at her as he watched three bodyguards following his daughter behind. He was a bit sad that Ji Yool couldn’t have a normal life, like any kid would have, but his occupation had make her different from her other friends. She has bodyguard following her wherever she go but she never once complained about it since she knew it was for her safety. She sometimes was too mature for her age, and Yunho didn’t know if he should be thankful for that or not.

A soft knock from the window woke him up from his trance and realized he had arrived at Cheong Wa Dae. He quickly got off the car when one of his bodyguards opened the door from him. He headed to his office, occasionally nodding and smiling when his employees greeted him.

He wasn’t a cruel president. He was a kind heart. He respected not only to his family but his servants too. On many occasions, he mingled with them, not a slight disgust shown in his eyes. That was why all the servants respected him too.

He walked into his room and was greeted with a mount of documents line up on his desk.

It was times like this when he hated being a president, when he was faced with such a mount of paperwork and difficult decision, knowing that he could end up alienating half of his people and his family’s wealthy by making the wrong choice, the wrong project. It was when these sorts of things happened that he most wanted to go back to the old time when he still had a chance to be a dancer, a job he had always dream of, even if he knew doing such a thing would be a betrayal to his parents, not that he hadn’t done that before. He just didn’t want to be faced with something such as this, or at least, not now when he just being a president not for too long.

And he was suddenly faced with a warning of a war.

What should he do?

What should he say to his people that there would be a war? When he had promised to make a better relationship with the North. When he had promised to make a world with no war.
And he felt he was slowly but surely couldn’t keep those promises.

He’d been agonizing over those thoughts all day, sitting in the high backed chair behind his desk in his office, flipping through the stacks of paperwork that always made his eyes hurt. He’d spent the last few days lost in his thoughts, attempting to think of something he could say to his people, advisor, and aristocrats, only he hadn’t come up with a single words.

Yunho had tried to calm things down, keeping their lines of communication open in the hopes that they could eventually work something out. But it seemed hopeless and if he were any less stubborn he would have given up by now. The only thing stopping him from giving in was the thought of the future of his country.

Looking up from the document he’d been scanning though for the last few minutes, after reading the same paragraph at least ten times, Yunho took notice of the ringing tone of his office phone. He picked it up and placed it in between his ear and his shoulder.

“Yes? What is it?”

“I’m sorry sir, if I’m disturbing you, but there are Mr. Shim and Mr. Park wish to meet you.” His assistant voice could be heard on the other line.

“Oh yes. Let them in.”

The president put the phone back to its place and turned his gaze to the door.

“What is it?” Yunho asked as soon as a group of people entered his room. He looked at them who have serious looks upon their faces.

He raised his eyebrows. It was pretty normal for Yoochun and Changmin to be in here with him, because he had called them. They were his advisor and lawyers so he needed their assistance upon the country’s material, often asking them for their honest opinions before signing certain papers. His parents’ and Junsu’s presence, however, were not common, especially if his father had already retired. And he got a feeling that whatever they had to say was not going to be good.

And he was right.

“Yunho,” his father began, not a slight nervousness he showed as he spoke to his only son. “We have been thinking and we’ve come to the solution that it’s the right time to discuss your marriage to Jaejoong.”

Yunho’s heart sank instantly.
