The waiting game

May 19, 2006 13:01

Have you noticed that modern commerce has turned into a total waiting game? What is this, 1952? Are manufacturers completely incapable of anticipating the demand for their products? Don't they spend millions of dollars every year on consumer research to determine how many people will want to buy the next must-have product, not to mention advertising those products through countless sources, stirring up a desire for whatever useful thing we need in our lives NOW, then telling us: Sure, no problem...that'll be ready in five months. Is everything now Made-To-Order and, if so, why is the quality so shoddy?

Maybe it's just because I'm furnishing a house that I'm noticing these things. Or perhaps it's because we sold everything we owned in New York and came to Portland with virtually nothing. Regardless, it's getting a little old. At first I didn't mind, but now that the credit card bills are rolling in for products that I don't even have in my hands, I can't help but be annoyed.
