WoW is fading into the background.
I feel bad for mocking it. DC Universe Online is actually a great game so far. I'm having as much, if not more, fun playing it than I did City of Villains when I started. I suppose it's due to its beatem up, button mashing nature. CoV was a fair deal of mashing, but not like this. This is L-Mouse 6 times for your attack chain. Right mouse for secondary (ranged attacks) and holding L mouse for guard breaking/interrupting and various degrees of holding L mouse, tap L mouse, hold R mouse and tap R mouse for your fighting. Also 1-8 on your number row for more specials. It's challenging but not crazy hard (At level 7 anyway, you'll 'die' if you don't take it easy.). It's fun and different. The attack animations for all power sets fit nicely and few look out of place. It is a beatem up MMO. That is to say a beatem up with depth.
It definitely has its lacking spots. (Not enough customization for a comic book game. Least of the 'big 3' City of XXXX, Champions and this.) Up close in the character customization the textures aren't very crisp as you'll see on the screenshots below. (This is probably due to it coming out on PS3 as well. While I don't think it's a port. I also don't think it's in any danger of giving my 2 - 1GB GeForce GTX 460s in SLI a real workout. Not inside of building anyways. Not that his matters as you're never zoomed in on your character unless you're fucking with their gear.) I won't go into great depth, because comic book games are a niche and I only know 1 other person that likes that niche. (Josstanz/Nekir) I do need to point out the small groups in this game very much appeal to my anti social ass. A group is 4 people. When you hit player cap at 30, which doesn't take long at all, I'm told. For tiered gear (like WoW) you can do it three ways. T1 drops from Duos and 4 man groups. T2 drops from 8 man groups. That's it. Duos are story lines that are just really make you work for it (difficulty) 4 & 8 mans are WoW type raids with some trash then boss then trash then boss. (Or so I've read.) There's also Heroic modes of the raids. Talk about small scale. It'll be quite awhile before I find out anything about that in person. Nekir just got the game and hasn't downloaded it yet. So..yea...weeks or so, but I do look forward to duoing and God help me doing (and it feels wrong to say this, given the small scale) 4 mans.
They have 'the holy trinity' in here. Tanks, heals and DPS. But their own version of dual spec means that only in raids do you go into the roles. When soloing/dailys/teaming up for missions etc you can be your 'original' self and do all the damage you want with your supplementary spec helping you along. Come raid time, if you're 1 of the 2 heal supplementary...it's much less DPS, much more healing. (Same with tanking and 'crowd control' supplements.)
Suffice to say I'll be playing WoW a lot less and this a lot more.
The screenshots below will be my 3 characters. 1 a 'control' supplementary, with Staff primary, Anastasia. 1 a 'tank' supp with Brawling primary, Marchosias (I get to spell is name correctly in this game. sias instead of the alternate cias) and 1 with 'heal' supp and Hand Blast/Sorcery primary, Xinivrae.
Xinivrae (from City of Villains [she was also made in that crapper Champions Online] is Marc's wife. Not that they allow a bio in this game.)
Marchosias (He's pretty much my 'main dude' for comic book games. Renegade demon brawler/brute/smart Hulk type of guy) The game won't let me 'demon' him out like they did in Champions or CoV so I just went with his more composed human form.
and the first character I'm leveling up. My 'hero' The other two are villains. I'm not a huge fan of DC comics. I know the casts and most of their shit and I even read their stuff. (Primarily Batman and his gang) So it's no surprise to me that I made a black leather clad roof scrambling martial arts fighter. (Though, she uses a Staff instead of the martial arts set.)
Yea, yea. Tight leather big 1/2 exposed boobs 'cool looking kick ass chick' nothing I haven't done before. If anything DC knows all about huge knockers and leather. >.> She's just...a new member to the club. <.< He motions with the Staff are fantastic, though. I always did like Shu in Dynasty Warriors. (Hurray if you get the reference.)
That's it for this blurb. Lots more to talk about, but as I say...this is a game with a niche.
