I like to think of the BNP result like this: Only one voter in 20 is sufficiently racist that they'd vote for a party whose only policy is to "send them back where they came from"

89% turnout? Up 32% since 2001? Blimey. Someone's rocked the shit out of that vote. As contrast, EU elections are compulsory in Belgium - you get fined if you don't vote - and they only get about 92% turnout. So 89% is pretty damn good, really.

the turnout in Hillsborough is fantastic! especially when compared to the likes of sheffield central (who didn't even manage 40%)

The BNP result was very disturbing, but at least they lost their deposit.

My cynical side can't help thinking that an 89% turnout suggests something dodgy happened with postal voting.

It is a maths problem, they had the total number of constituents wrong.

Hmm, Brightside results are interesting:

BNP got 6.2% of the vote, however turnout was only 36.9%

Guess a lot of people thought it wasn't worth voting against Blunkett.
