oahu: week one in kailua

Nov 27, 2009 23:46

the first week was all about spending time with family: cousin shortee, her boyfriend "gnc", and dear friend laura. we rented this house and it was just lovely (except for the cockroaches. gnc didn't like the geckos much but i didn't mind them). we beached, we barbecued, we pooled, and we shopped.

and i'll be completely honest. pre-baby, i took a photo-journalistic approach to our vacations. i documented everything in pictures. this time around, it was all about baby, you understand. so here you have it, a photo diary entry of the first week of our vacation.

kailua beach park
we chose the house because the beaches in the area were supposed to be lovely. and they were. kailua also happens to be the home town of president obama... touring his previous haunts ended up being a bit of an unintentional theme for us in our adventures. more on that later.

the house pool
after we tired of hanging out under the sun, we hung out at the house pool. zeph liked it much better than the ocean.

hanauma bay
i love hanauma bay. one of my favourite places in the world. the last time we were there, i swam out almost as far as the mouth of the ocean. but as i mentioned in my last entry, strong currents and jellyfish kept it from being very "swimmable." so we lounged under some palm trees and enjoyed being under the sun instead. 'twas lovely all the same.

lanikai beach
this beach was by far our favourite. off the beaten path, you can only get to it through residential passageways. the shitty part was that although the sand shimmered white and was of the softest powder underfoot, it got everywhere. and then the trade winds brought jellyfish into the water... so we decided to call it a morning earlier than we would've liked. but such a privilege it was to be there at the time.

i didn't take pictures of the shopping. but most of it was done at the aloha stadium swap meet and ala moana mall. 4 pairs of shoes, 1 bag, outfits for all, and 2 strollers later. that's right. i said 2 strollers.

and even though we got lost lost lost because of the crappy gps we happened to have with us, we had a fabulous time enjoying the sights, neighbourhoods, alleyways, and highways we encountered on the island. i, for one, dared to dream about a day when we might be fortunate enough not just to be mistaken for "kama'aina," but to consider ourselves true residents of hawaii.

mmmm, clearly i'm still dreaming, eh?
