thanks to the kindly zucherart, I was encouraged enough to download LJ Archive: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/ and managed to download all of my entries and comments quickly and easily.
I went ahead and did it because I didn't want one other thing to worry about, plus then I would scoff at myself for worrying in the first place and buying into group-think and panicky rumors. Easier this way.
