The creek

On days like this, I remember why we bought this little house. The north branch of Peachtree Creek runs through our backyard, and our property line in back goes to the middle of the creek. Sometimes, blue herons visit. A pair of great horned owls, several species of hawk and a deer or two have also been known to stop by.

When we get some rain -- and we're getting a lot right now -- it gets very high and fast and noisy. It's a biggish creek, maybe 25 feet across, and our backyard slopes down far enough that we aren't required to have flood insurance.

Our neighborhood consists of brick ranches and split-levels, most of which were built in the early sixties. We are within hearing distance of an interstate and a commuter airport, and the public schools that serve the area have bad reputations.

Our house badly needs its hardwood floors redone. We have just over 1,100 square feet in which to conduct our lives. There is a small leak in the roof which we are trying to forget.

But on days like this, the creek calls to me in a voice I can't ignore. It reminds me why I'm here.

creek, domesticity, animals, rain, nature
