Character's Personality:
Phoenix Wright it that awkward, cute man that rides his bicycle to work every day. He’s as kind as someone can be, being one to believe that nobody is guilty until proven otherwise. He carries a strong sense of justice and tries his hardest to find the good in everybody. As a child, he felt the pressure of what it’s like to be accused of something and have nobody believe that you’re innocent when you are. After being helped out by another classmate, he made it his goal to help those who have nobody else on their side. Phoenix wanted to be that person that someone could rely on. There are times when he’s even willing to sacrifice his job to help. And these are just to complete strangers. To those who Phoenix has grown attached to, he’s willing to face his fears head on, get himself hurt, and do the stupidest of things in order to protect them. He’s definitely the “don’t hurt them, take me instead” kind of person. His life is simply unimportant when his friends are in danger.
As a lawyer, Phoenix is constantly in stressful situations and when things are looking gloom, he can really fall to pieces. Not that he’s one to give up easily, but there are times when he will go into a panic as any normal human would. Symptoms include stuttering, passing out, grabbing his head and commenting on how it’s all over, and doing idiotic things such as running across a flaming bridge. It depends on what’s going on, really. However, he is quick to pick himself up when he has someone cheering him on from the sidelines telling him that he can do it. When people believe in him, he’ll want to believe in himself.
Though often perceived as a mature person for warning his assistant to not do dumb things and being the most normal person compared to the weirdoes he runs into, Phoenix does have that childish side to him. He enjoys cracking puns and laughing at his own jokes that nobody else seems to find humorous. He especially likes using his last name ,“Wright”, in his jokes (he can’t stand it when others use it as the butt of their jokes though, especially when being called “Mr. Wrong“). If he feels like he’s being picked on, he’ll make little “why me” and “that’s not fair” comments in his head. There are times when he’ll say it loudly too. He’s quite sarcastic when he dealing with odd people, often poking fun at them in his head. Even to his close friends will he make remarks about them.
Phoenix has a natural talent for bluffing when he really needs too. He’ll say what he believes loudly and proudly though commenting to himself that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Again, this attaches to his wanting to give his innocent clients a not-guilty verdict. He’s stubborn and can really be perceived as a fool while he makes up little stories with his odd pieces of evidence. The fact that his tactics work show his amazing luck and true skill. He's also known for shouting very loudly in court. These words being: "OBJECTION", "HOLD IT", and "TAKE THAT".
Any special abilities or powers the character may have: Aside from his lucky streak and ability to bluff, Phoenix has an object called the Magatama, a spiritual trinket given to him by Maya Fey. If he so chooses, he can tell when someone is lying to him for the Magatama will allow him to see locked treasure chest like boxes wrapped in chains called psycho-locks. The more psycho-locks he sees, the more secrets the person is holding. By using evidence, he can break psycho-locks and eventually force the truth out. Tl;dr: He knows when you're lying.
Character History:
Phoenix’s history starts when he’s a young boy in the fourth grade. It is there where he’s accused of stealing someone else’s lunch money and the class declares him guilty. A scene in the game shows his much younger self crying until two classmates step forward to back him up. Miles Edgeworth, a boy that wishes to be a defense attorney when he grew up, comments that there’s no evidence to prove him guilty while Larry Butz simply agrees. The class steps down and the three boys become best friends. Not too long after, Miles moves and, of course, Phoenix is baffled by this and goes on to send his friend letters. He never gets a response, but he stays inspired from the boy who stood by his side.
During his time in college, Phoenix is a nerdy art student with a big pink sweater and a girlfriend, Dahlia, that secretly wants him dead. He’s accused of murdering a man named Doug Swallows, Dahlia’s ex-boyfriend, and is brought into a court room. His case is seemingly hopeless, but defense attorney Mia Fey clears his name and brings Phoenix the not guilty verdict while Dahlia is declared as the real criminal. Though he was going to law school on the side, Mia Fey half inspires him to get into the law career completely. The other half that made him do it was seeing his old friend Miles Edgeworth in the newspaper holding the title “Demon Prosecutor”.
His first case is a murder trial where he meets his other old friend, Larry Butz, again. Now Mia Fey’s pupil, she stands on the side to help him out. Being the hero of the game, he wins. For his second case, he needs to defend Maya Fey for the murder of her older sister, Mia. He also happens to up against prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. Phoenix would have probably fallen into a slump from the death of his friend and ‘teacher’ and finding that his childhood friend was now a persnickety jerk if it hadn’t been for the spunky Maya that became his assistant after he proved her innocent. A variety of events transpire with each new case Phoenix takes. He makes a variety of new friends including Maya’s younger cousin, Pearl, and an odd Detective named Dick Gumshoe. He makes a name for himself as a lucky rookie lawyer that beat the Demon Prosecutor and never loses. There’s quite an arrangement of odd people he goes to defend, one of them even being Miles.
After the case with Miles, Maya leaves to her village to train her psychic powers and Phoenix stops taking cases until Ema Skye comes along. It was after the case she helped him with that he fell into a depressive slump due to Edgeworth leaving what seemed to be a suicide note behind. Once again, he stopped taking cases until a man named Turner Grey beckoned him to go to Kurain, Maya’s home town. He starts taking up cases against after this with Maya and even Pearl at his side. Edgeworth, turning out to be alive, eventually comes back and helps Phoenix on a case surrounding a guilty client and Maya being kidnapped. After this, he goes on another spree of odd cases and runs into his ex-girlfriend’s ghost, her sister, and Mia’s former ‘teacher’ that was supposedly dead. Everything turns out well in the end though (for the most part, at least).
And seven years later…that’s a different story for this Phoenix.
