it's getting harder and harder to breathe

I was invited, but you never would have guessed it. Dick was off somewhere trying to score with a freshman and the Beav was probably already throwing up an hour into this whole thing (none of us ever expected him to hold his liquor well). Yeah, I was invited to this whole bash - the one Dick called the total blowout before things totally sucked ass ( Read more... )

"I just meant, you know the whole of the school that isn't classified as one of the elite, one of the 'blessed', they want to be. Or the vast majority of them, anyway." I explained, laughing softly at his joke. He knew well enough that the public perception of his life was a giant mess for the most part after everything that had happened since Christmas. I wasn't sure anyone specifically envied him at the moment. Maybe having all the money to him self, not being responsible for any one or to anyone, in that giant mansion... that I could see. But the whole package based on all the rumors? Maybe not.

"Do you see me complaining?" I challenged at his smile. "You look good in what you're already wearing. Besides? You so don't have hips enough to pull that off anyway." I added, teasingly.

"I think you hit the nail on the head as to my logic, Logan." I smiled to him. "Some things just taste better mixed. Like, say Root Beer with a about a third a glass of orange soda?" I said as I set about alternating the Orange and the Root Beer in the cup before topping it off with a good sized dollop of Cream Soda. The cup was far too big to logically be carried with one hand, but the point is sugar high, right?

"Well, if I knew I wouldn't have to ask." I pointed out, "I was curious about where you stood on the mixing slushie flavours is all." I smiled, "But just to get these out of the way: Chocolate - Reeses Peanut Butter cups, non-chocolate - Pixie sticks, Pink, sentimental and silly but a cardigan Lizzie got me like five years ago for my birthday, I'm actually pretty fond of Jazz but I'll listen to pretty much anything short of heavy metal or hip-hop without complaint. And even though you didn't mention: Album - Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan, Book - Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts, author - Jane Austen, Movie - Wizard of Oz, TV show - Gilmore Girls. You?" I asked with a curious smile.

Okay, so there have been more than a few moments here where we're blatantly flirting with each other. And then there was the questioning about favourites.

Had I missed some key sign that this had switched from just hanging out to something else? I don't think so, but I wasn't exactly paying attention either.

I nodded towards her, agreeing. We were the blessed - if blessed meant being continually knocked down by everyone around us who might just have it in for us having money and/or quote unquote fame of any sort. If blessed meant that I had to continue my life with the way that it headed, I did not want to be blessed in any way. I know there's something that's going on with Meg, beyond school and everything, but I don't know how to pin point it. She just hides away from it - her own defense is her smile.

"You know, had you not started with that I looked good in what I was wearing I probably would have never though these hips would be good enough for you," I teased towards her at her statement. "I lack being socially accepted by my peers so," I sighed in mock wistfulness.

"But to your whole mix? Mmmhm, one of my personal favorites is the Cherry flavor and the Coca Cola." She'd already pre-discovered in possibly one of her early mixing stages they joy of Root Beer mixed with orange soda. I poured over top of my half filled cup of Root Beer slushie some Black Cherry flavoring.

"Well, obviously you know I'm not opposed to mixing slushies. I'm not horribly against any sort of liquid sugar and I don't think it's blasphemous to put banana flavor in with grape, though I'm not to big on grape flavoring to begin with," I replied. She had answered all my questions and then some in one shot and I couldn't help but smile before I returned with my own answers. "Chocolate - Snickers. Non-chocolate - Nerds. Orange, though I favor Green and Red too. Um, I don't have a favorite piece of clothing, though I'm kind of fond of this jacket you're wearing except I'm starting to like it better on you. Rock, mostly rock. Stuff like The Stills and Ben Lee. Album - Abby Road, however geeky that might make me. Book - House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. No real preference of an author. Movie - Fight Club and I like the TV show Alias."

"Think that answers some of your questions?" I asked with a curve of a smile. I knew what this one. It was blatant flirting with one another. The jokes and even the awkward pauses? It was all part of something bigger.

I took out a few bills to pay for our slushies before we headed to walk towards the beach.

"Like your mix?" I asked, taking a sip of my own.

"Right, because I actually care who or what our mindless, self-involved, hypocritical peers deem as acceptible?" I rolled my eyes playfully. If I actually cared I wouldn't have spoken to Veronica at all last year, never mind considered her a friend. I'm not sure where we stand at the moment, but it wasn't exactly a primary concern of mine right now either. We could figure that out later. Hopefully without Duncan being fused to her at the hip.

And even without all that, I figured the fact that I was with him now despite all the rumors swirling kind of proved that I didn't care who thought what about how I chose to spend my time. I was having fun with Logan, and that was the whole point.

"Though I think I should ask what the lack of hips to properly wear hip-huggers has to do with your hips being good enough for me." I pointed out with a smirk.

"Which basically makes Cherry Coke, which they do sell... not exactly original there." I laughed softly. "But, no, clearly, no opposition to the mixing thing here." I added with a smile when he said I obviously knew he wasn't opposed to the mixing of slushie varieties. "As far as Banana and Grape goes...any fake banana flavour never actually tastes like banana, so as I rule I avoid. Is there any mix line you won't cross?" I questioned.

"Yeah, it does." I nodded when he asked if it answered my questions, my cheeks feeling slightly hot from the comment about me and his jacket. This had definitely transitioned to slightly more than just hanging out, but it didn't feel quite dateish either. It was a weird kind of limbo between the two. "And liking the Beatles is not geeky. They're classic now, Lennon and McCartney considered some of the best songwriters in popular music. Liking them just means you have an appreciation for good music."

"You know you didn't have to pay, right?" I questioned as we walked towards the beach. "And yes, I like my mix. But this is really not the first time I've done this combo. It's been tested before." I smiled. "You?"

No, Meg wasn't about to deny those around her because they didn't fit a certain profile she wanted. It wasn't in her to deny others like some did to her. It crossed my mind that she could even be too forgiving. I had stopped speaking to others for less than what she'd gone through - or what I knew she went through. Hell, I'd done a lot more than that for less.

As it's been already pointed out this evening, she wouldn't be here talking and walking - drinking slushies with me - if she even cared about any one else's opinion of me. It was still refreshing. A stranger, almost, who just didn't need to know the details and hold them against you.

"Though I think I should ask what the lack of hips to properly wear hip-huggers has to do with your hips being good enough for me."

She smirks and a return a slow smile towards here. "And here I thought that one was obvious," I replied to her, not holding back on a flirtatious tone that took over my voice. "As for the whole mixing lines? I prefer to think there are no lines at all, just consistent new discoveries whether good or not so much. I'll try anything once," I laughed softly.

Her cheeks were already flushing pink from some comment I made about her in my jacket (obviously not the cold weather, though she could possibly get away with making that an excuse for rosy cheeks). I noticed and moved on without any need to embarrass her further.

"See, the Beatles? It's mainstream. You get people who listen to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and they think they can see through it all," I clucked my tongue against the roof of my mouth in distaste. "Other than that..." I shrugged.

I knew I didn't have to pay for her drink, but it could have possibly just been force of habit - anything. It didn't seem like that big of a deal. I leaned across towards her to take a sip from her slushie straw, letting the mix settle in my mouth for a moment before I answered with a small grin towards her. "Yeah, I like your mix too."

I wasn't even sure how to respond to his 'obvious' comment coupled with that tone, so I just decided for the moment to skip past it, "You're braver than most, I'll give you that." Nearly everybody I knew thought I was a little weird for mixing flavours all the time, but Logan sounded like he would very easily give me a run for my money when it came to flavour combinations.

"It doesn't really matter what you're dealing with, you'll get the know-it-all posers, Logan." I pointed out, laughing softly at his complaint that the Beatles were mainstream now, "Besides, give anything like, 40 years, it'll be pretty close to mainstream by that time, don't you think?" Seemed perfectly logical to me. I'm sure there are people who are really into independent music that must just cringe every time something gets used on a TV show or a car commercial. "Give it enough time and everything is eventually mainstream."

"I should've seen that coming, right?" I asked in disbelief as he took a sip of my slushie. "Glad you like, but I was actually asking if you liked yours." I said, smiling and shaking my head.

"You're definitely one of a kind, aren't you?" I questioned, after taking another sip of my drink.

"I'm curious, not brave," I corrected her. I didn't see how trying new flavors elevated me to a brave status. Just as listening to Abby Road didn't elevate people to see through walls or discover the formula for world peace.

I knew what she had asked. I had just chosen to give my own twist to her words. "Yep," I agreed with her that she should have seen it coming that I would have tried her slushie mix. It would have happened sooner or later, but she had just given me the perfect opening.

I took a sip of my own slushie and nodded towards her. Of course I liked my own mix, it had been expressed that Cherry Coke wasn't exactly a new flavor or even original. I held my cup out for her to try herself. "If it makes you feel even with me," I teased her lightly.

She comments about how one of a kind I am and I'm pretty sure that's true. I don't think about it much either way, but I'm pretty sure that there aren't that many guys who get accused of murder and have lives like mine. The question, regardless, makes me smile again, which is something that she hasn't failed in managing.

"I'm special, just like everyone else," I tell her. "Along with that, I'm not a know-it-all poser. All part of my package."

"And the difference when it comes to food is...?" I questioned when he said he was curious, not brave. "I mean, the wrong combination and it could taste like vomit or something." I teased.

"Okay..." I laughed, "Should I be more careful about how I phrase things around you or would that just be no fun at all?" I smirked as I took a sip of his slushie. Of course it would be much less fun for him if I didn't just walk right into moments like that but why give him an automatic free pass to do whatever? "So, what would you have mixed with the Cherry Coke if that had already been an option?" I asked curiously.

"Believe it or not, everybody's unique in their own way, Logan." I insisted to him when he says he's special just like everyone else. No such thing. Couldn't help but notice the intitial comment had gotten a smile out of him though. Maybe with the way things had gone for him lately he'd started to buy into what everybody was saying to a point? I really hoped not. At least he was smiling. "But I'm glad you're not a know-it-all poser. 'Cause yeah, if I wanted to hang out with a bunch of those, I'd probably still be at the party, right?"

I was sure that a moment ago she knew that I was flirting with her, so either she's not particularly interested and trying to let me down in some soft Meg Manning way or she's just embarrassed. Somehow, that smirk on her face leads me to believe that I should both be making a first move along with continuing to flirt with her - maybe not exactly in that order though.

"It's doubtful. Food requires bravery, or alternatively stupidity, when it comes to things like arsenic, not slushie mixes," I told her. "As far as if Cherry Coke was an option, I might try it with a little Cream Soda tonight. Sweet tooth," I replied as if it was completely self explanatory.

"And I'm not sure about this whole being careful about how you phrase things around me. It sounds like too much work and a severe lack of fun for the both of us." I pass by her comments completely on everyone being unique in there own way. It was what I meant and nothing more. "So, I don't see you doubting coming out with me yet," I said, a small smile gracing my face.

"Fine, then." I laughed at his arsenic comment, "And like you have to somehow justify the sweet tooth thing to me... we remember the contents of my slushie being alternating layers of rootbeer and orange topped by cream soda, right?" Yeah, I wasn't exactly going to fault him for having a thing for sweets when I was clearly addicted to them too. "Or my favourite candy being pixie sticks?"

The amount of sugar I ingest there should be more jokes about hyper cheerleaders directed towards me than there are, really. I'm a pretty big believer in indulging the sugar cravings.

"Yeah, I can so see your point there... and it would probably completely disrupt the flow of conversation if I were to stop and figure out all the ways you might distort my words before every thing I said." I agreed with a smile. "And no, I'm having a good time, Logan. Don't I look it?"

I was really enjoying getting to know Logan better. It wasn't exactly how I'd expected tonight to go, but I wasn't complaining. It had already been established we weren't exactly hurting anyone by flirting and enjoying each other's company.

"At least you didn't pour pixie sticks into your slushie," I point out teasingly to her with a grin. "Which I'm actually almost guessing that you've done before." But then again who hadn't? It was like pouring pixie sticks, pop rocks or sugar cubes into soda and then checking out it dissolving or bubbling up. It was something those unafraid of diabetes did, or just kids who have too much time on their hands and too much curiosity in their heads.

"You do look a lot happier than just being back at that party with a lousy drunk slobbering all over you. I wonder why," I teased again, baiting her in for maybe more good remarks or flirting. If I said I didn't appreciate the attention I'd be lying.

It was less alone than it was before. There was company and for even five minutes it wasn't about who dumped us or what was the latest gossip when it came to our lives. Murder and suicide was so passe, didn't they get that? Even for it, there were people out there who believed what ever they had heard.

"No, I'm liking this too," I reassured her.

"I have, yeah." I nodded, "Don't really think I need to be that hyper... and I haven't done it for a long time." I told him. "But honestly? When I was younger, I'd dump pretty much anything in my soda just to see what happened. M&Ms were a big favourite there if the glass was clear. Especially if the soda itself was clear."

I wasn't sure why I was telling Logan all this random stuff. I mean, it wasn't as if I ever talked about it anymore. It was stuff I'd done in like, middle school.

"Gee, I wonder." I reply sarcastically, rolling my eyes playfully, "Drunk guys drooling all over me like hyperactive puppies or fun conversation and yummy slushies with a guy who seems to appreciate the fact that I'm more than just good at filling out the dress I'm wearing? That's a tough call, Logan, really." I smirked.

I was almost wishing I'd gotten to know Logan better before now. He was good company, that's for sure. I didn't feel like he was expecting me to be anyone but who I was, or like I had to make excuses for things around him. I was actually more relaxed right now than I had been in a really long time.

It was kind of weird. Nice weird, but weird.

"I'm glad." I smiled brightly to him when he said he was enjoying himself too.

"Well, who can resist chocolate and soda all in one?" I offer with a small grin towards her. No one needs to go into some sugar shock just because of some need to have more candy than either of us could possibly handle. I'm sure this huge slushie we both have in our hands are sweet enough to last us for at least the week, if not longer.

She looks almost amused at the conversation. It's not like we're revealing anything incriminating, just something that neither of us really bothered talking about or even needed to. I can't remember the last time I've talked about nothing that meant something with someone.

"Well, I do appreciate the fact that you're good at filling out your dress, but I just appreciate you and your sugar love a little more. If all I cared about was getting laid or anything else that could fall under that category, I'm pretty sure that I would have been hitting on you a lot earlier this evening," I pointed out. "Maybe even making some move to take away your virtue," I teased lightly.

No, I think I care a little more than to just throw away someone in some little flame that I won't even remember in the morning.
