BACKGROUND: The WUTAI Corporation was originally a wealthy, thriving business based in Tokyo, Japan. Run by Godo Kisaragi, it specialised in weapons development and the replication or study of mystical artifacts. This unfortunately put it at a serious disadvantage in an americanised world market when compared with the larger companies overseas, and it began to struggle to keep up with the demands of the growing economy. To make matters worse during the height of this stressful situation, Godo’s wife died of a terminal illness, leaving him to look after their young daughter alone. Obviously, being a Japanese CEO, he had absolutely no idea how to look after a small child. Yuffie was already running wild by the time a rival corporation began luring WUTAI’s scientists and researchers away, and just before her eighth birthday, Godo capitulated and agreed to a humiliating merger. Even though she had no real interest in running the company, Yuffie was disgusted by this and resolved to ‘restore the honour of WUTAI’ on her own. This was in no way helped by her obsession with cheesy ninja films.

Of course, to her young mind this could be accomplished by stealing the inventions and patents of other companies, which she set about with a will. Such a will, in fact, that it is sometimes in doubt whether she's just using the company as an excuse. Regardless of motive, with the help of an oddly helpful civil servant, she was able to obtain the details of a large number of heroes and other crime-fighters. Sending out hundreds of fake distress e-mails, she eventually managed to attract the attention of Wolverine of the X-Men. Not that he wanted to help; he’d just rapidly gotten tired of her spamming his communicator. She followed him around as he did what he does best around the city, snatching up anything that looked promising when she thought he wasn't looking. A week or so later, he left Japan again. And refused to take her along. Outraged for approximately five days, Yuffie quickly returned to her self-appointed crusade and forgot all about it.

When she turned sixteen, she immediately applied for her own passport and visa - once again calling in some favours with the criminal element she had inevitably encountered over the past eight years - and flew to America. To her father's extreme relief, and the vague horror of everyone who'd ever met her. Fortunately for everyone but her, she arrived in New York and managed to target two ex-X-Men immediately. Must be some kind of Blessed With Suck sense, considering her track record. Anyway, these two - Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart - were decidedly more difficult to target, and after being brushed off, Yuffie resolved to follow them. And so she did: all the way to the Institute. Being Yuffie, she's entirely convinced that they have to have a vault full of amazing things, and she is determined to obtain it for herself. To this end, she shamelessly enrolled as a student.

Her time at the Xavier Institute taught Yuffie a great deal. Not only did she realise there were others with abilities like hers, but she met and befriended any number of other students in her various misdeeds. One of the strongest bonds she developed was with a young man called Itachi, whose dark, silent demeanour made him an easy and irresistable target for Yuffie the moment she discovered him in the cells below the mansion. After the curfew of the school was put into effect more strenuously than usual, she formed the reaction group 'Curfew Club' with the help of Alfred Jones. Its aim: spending one night a week irritating every member of staff sent to retrieve the packs of students flouting curfew in increasingly ridiculous locations. Other friends included the shapeshifting teacher Leon, who seemed unduly wary of her for a reason he never explained, and Rinoa Heartilly, a girl who became her partner-in-crime when it came to bothering the aforementioned shapeshifter. She had a brief and entertaining relationship with Axel Pyres, but their mutual selfishness and lack of anything resembling personal loyalty meant that one of them would inevitably leave at some point. After following him to the Brotherhood of Mutants when the opportunity presented itself, Yuffie lasted all of two weeks before the wanderlust hit her again (as well as her notorious seasickness) and she jumped ship (literally) the moment they were granted shore leave at Boston Harbor.

Now a large bag of supplies and a garish purple cape richer, Yuffie had several options open to her. She could have returned to the Xavier Institute and resumed her studies, or she could have gone home to the Wutai Corporation with her spoils. She took the third option: she was arrested for petty theft a day after her departure and after eleven escapes and recaptures over the course of a week cumulating in her being apprehended in the strong-room of a large bank branch dressed in a cat-eared poncho for no readily apparent reason, the Boston police turned her over to an unlucky SHIELD agent who happened to be in the area on another assignment.

Being taken on-board the Helicarrier went about as well as the Brotherhood submarine did, and Yuffie spent several days in a cell being violently ill and complaining to anyone and anything that moved that she was having her human rights violated. Three days in, she mentioned Itachi's name during a stream of expletives, and was immediately taken for questioning due to the 'sensitive nature of that information'. A few hours later, and she'd managed to convince her questioners that she was a protegee of their ex-agent.

At this point, her series' editor was removed from the project, and it was picked up by another team entirely with a new artist and series subtitle. Thus she found herself a junior agent of SHIELD (level 1), with a small group of new acquaintances and a new outfit. Due to reader demand, nothing was retconned. This has led to some slight continuity snarling with the main series, but the new editor is determined to continue with the new direction no matter the confusion.

/puts the fourth wall back in place

As a junior agent of SHIELD (level 1), Yuffie has been passed from team to team until ending up in New York, living with a veteran agent of SHIELD who also happens to be a large marmelade cat. She sees nothing odd about this, and has taken up running a small, somewhat criminal-oriented pawn shop as a cover for their more espionagey activities.

PERSONALITY: Obnoxious, brash, melodramatic, not to be trusted. Yuffie has been tricking people and committing minor crimes since she was eight; whilst she is undoubtedly childish and immature, she can and will lie, cheat and steal to get what she wants. And want she wants is generally your stuff. She is a serial kleptomaniac, and self-centred to boot. Her plots are more often than not ruined by her impatience or lack of anything resembling tact; although able to plan ahead to some degree, she thinks up elaborate plots and then promptly spoils them with an ill-timed outburst in the same breath. Luckily she’s also pretty darned inventive, so even if a plan is spoiled she can salvage the operation, even if that just means yelling abuse and stealing the target’s wallet instead of their entire fortune. She can settle.

Lacking any kind of raw physical strength and being fairly clumsy, neither Yuffie nor anyone else is entirely sure why she trained as a ninja. She’s actually good at it, when she’s concentrating or she’s not standing on high things making absurd proclamations. She collects odd gadgetry, and although she’s the heir to her father’s corporation she has very little interest in actually learning how to run a business or make her own technology, more than content to just take the ones other people have invented. DESPITE THIS LONG LIST OF CHARACTER DEFECTS! Yuffie can grow attached to people she spends a lot of time around, and even shows affection in her own odd little ways. Generally this is offset by her demanding too much of a relationship in the early stages and alienating the friend in question. She can be incredibly enthusiastic and cheerful, and gestures and dances around enough that standing at least a metre away at all times is just common sense. As she makes friends easily and twists and manipulates situations in a fairly eccentric manner, she thus adapts best to new situations by making them work for her. If you’ve gained her respect - or have something she wants - she is a strong and lively ally.

And finally, she suffers from intense travel-sickness and avoids transport whenever physically possible.

In the time between arriving at the Institute and being recruited into SHIELD, she has gained a vague sense of A Duty To Fight Evil and has become perhaps slightly more responsible. She's still pretty awful, though.

APPEARANCE: Yuffie is, firstly, very short. She's only five-foot-two despite being sixteen, and scrawny besides. Her hair is the typical Japanese black, short and slightly layered. Her sense of fashion is somewhat eclectic in that she doesn't seem to have any kind of system; rather she looks like she crashed into a clothing shop and fell out the other side wearing whatever she'd been able to grab whilst flailing wildly. Also short shorts. Since joining SHIELD, she hasn't changed her clothing choices at all, beyond the addition of sewing the SHIELD badge to anything within reach.

POWERS: She has Marvel-brand NINJA TRAINING, so obviously she can run up walls and perform ridiculous acrobatics, because learning to fight in Japan means you have no spine and a dexterity rating a cat would envy. She is pretty darned good at stealth, as long as there's no one around she wants to show off to, because in that case she is louder than a dinosaur exploding in a kitchen. Her actual mutant power is short-range teleportation - basically 'shunpo' or 'flash steps' - allowing her to reach anywhere else within her sight without having to actually move. (With a range of about five metres, though she's been known to reach up to fifteen during an adrenaline rush) So basically she can reach anywhere she can see, but she's stopped by, say, walls. Or locked doors, which is why she's working on her lockpicking. She is able to use her ability in mid-air to extend the range of a normal jump, but cannot use the ability if restrained by ropes or the grip of another person. Basically she can 'skip' actually taking the steps or making the movement, hence her codename.
