I hope this works. Apologies if the LJ cut fails, it's been a pain today.

Title- Small Surprises
Cgaracters- Arrow clan
Summary- Christmas ficlet
Rated G

Roy's grin is like the room, bright and happy. His eyes sparkle like the tinsel and decorations that adorn the tree. The joy on Lian's face is almost enough to ease the nervous flutter that tickles low in his stomach, warning him that all might not be as it appears...

But then Ollie reaches for his surprise, carefully pulling the fragile parcel from behind the mounds of other gifts that sit under the tree, and to Roy's relief the package is small...well, smallish. The redhead feels himself relax just a little, the box, although a little bigger then a hat-box, certainly doesn't look as though it can hide anything bigger than an average sized stuffed toy inside of it- it seems as though Ollie listened to him for once. He sighs happily as he watches his father hold the gift out to the dark-haired angel who's warm brown eyes widen with glee as the package is placed gently on the floor in front of her.

Lian takes a tentative step forward and drops to her knees, running tiny fingers over the carefully tied green and red bow that adorns the present. The little girl jumps when the box moves. She stares at it warily when it jerks and shakes, and then she gasps in surprise, as she hears a low whine, and lets out a high pitched, excited squeal when she realizes just what is hidden under the Christmas wrapping and ribbon. She launches herself forward and peers through the air holes in the side and then screams in sheer childish delight when she realizes her Christmas request from Grand'pa has been granted. "Thank you Gran'pa. Thank you thank you thank you!" she chirrupts enthusiastically.

The bow is torn off and tossed aside and the box ripped open, and....

Roy gasps. His mouth drops open in shock, and then he slams it shut and glares at his father even as his little girl bounces around the room with a black and tan bundle of energy yapping at her heels.

Roy decides killing Ollie in front of Lian would be a bad idea, but he can indulge himself by thinking about it. He's already imagining using his mentor for target practice- tying him up and using the really sharp arrows, when Ollie notices the look and raises his hands questioningly. "What?" the bearded archer mouths over the happy noises that reverberate through the room.

Without waiting for his son to answer, Ollie goes back to grinning at his granddaughters excitement, silently congratulating himself for getting it right this year. Last years Sea Monkeys didn't get this much of a reaction. The puppy is definitely a winner.

Roy clears his throat and catches his fathers eye once more. "We agreed." he mouths back, glaring at the older archer "Small!" He adds a growl of disapproval for emphasis.

"It is small." Ollie say's out loud, looking at his son as though he's fifty cents short of a dollar.

Roy pets Lian on the head as she grabs his legs and runs around them, then she shoots off around the Christmas tree before she barrels down the hallway, laughing hysterically - puppy in hot pursuit.

"It's a German Shepherd, Ollie. It's not gonna stay small." Roy grumbles when she's out of earshot.

Ollie rolls his eyes. "Just be grateful I didn't get her the first thing she asked for."

Roy doesn't look `grateful', just rather annoyed. "Yeah? And what could be worse than a great hulking German Shepherd running around my apartment?"

"A pony." Ollie says with surety as he strokes his beard thoughtfully. "I heard about these miniature ones...Not much bigger than the dog will be when it's grown actually, but I couldn't find a ranch that had any for sale." The archer sighs, then grins as an idea forms. "Maybe next year..."

Roy chokes and his eyebrows climb upward. He opens his mouth to speak...then shuts it. He's not sure if Ollie's jokeing or not, and for once he's lost for words.

Mia bursts out laughing. "You should see your face." she chuckles, her own gifts sit unopened - forgotten for a moment as she watches the `Ollie and Roy` show with interest.

Roy turns the glare towards her.

"I did explain that it might not be that that easy to house train a pony." Connor interjects helpfully. "I also suggested that a Pekinese or the little Pug dog that was at the pet store would have been a better choice, but dad insisted he buy this one." And he has no idea why Roy shoots him a glare as well, he is on his brothers side after all.

"Oh, boyo..." Dinah say's, stepping in to wrap her arms around Roy's waist. She can't help smiling at the childish giggles and playful puppy yaps that echo down the hall. "She's so happy. Isn't that all that really matters?" She smiles warmly up at the young man and most certainly doesn't mention her part in encouraging Ollie to give this particular gift.

Ollie gives his son a boisterous slap on the back. "Of course it's all that matters!" He states, taking a cautious step back as the read head turns to look at him- eyes narrowed with promise of payback. And then he grins, ignoring the warning that is hidden within the gaze. He has nothing to fear, after all, he knows his son well. The boy will come around; he always does when its something that makes his little girl happy. "Merry Christmas, son." Ollie says with good-natured humor. "If you think the puppy is a good gift, just wait till you see what I got for you!"

Roy isn't at all sure he wants to see what seasonal treasure Ollie has picked out for him, but when Lian rushes up to him and, enthusiastically thrusts a wriggling ball of fur towards him declaring this the "bestest Christmas ever!" , he can't help but allow a small grin to tweak at his lips. He reaches down and ruffles the puppies thick, downy fur, staring contemplatively at him for a moment before grinning broadly and looking at his daughter. "I know just the name for him. We should call him `OJ' " he declares.

Ollie's choked "Oh no you don't!" is drowned out by Lian's squeal of "Yaay! C'mon OJ, lets go play!"

Roy's smile is genuine this time. Lian is happy and Ollie will wince every time she calls the dogs name. It is indeed a Merry Christmas!

**For those who have never read "Archers Quest" Roy makes fun of Ollie's full name by declaring "Ladies and Gentleman, I'd like to welcome you to the reading of the last will and testament of Oliver Jonas Queen. Or as I like to call him, OJ Queen. C'mon....I challenge someone to get a better name. OJ Queen, with a name like that you're in the wrong line of work."

Apparently the teasing over those initials is an ongoing joke Roy and Ollie have shared over the years. (or rather, Roy has shared and Ollie has endured )
