a ficlet for beacon_hills got out of hand, so it's under the cut with a little graphic

For the crack pairings challenge (I'd say unusual in this case! certainly pretty rare!)

I have a 500 x 500 graphic of Marin Morrell and Kali (Emissary/Alpha, I dig it, and BEAUTIFUL ladies)

And a little what if...

Pairing: Boyd/Kira
AU of course (boo!)
1256 words (all mistakes are mine!)

Untitled Boyd/Kira

A comic book store is a weird place to have an epiphany. Nonetheless, that's where it hits Boyd: he has healed, at least a little bit.

For years he refused to even walk near this shop, it was too painful. Erica loved it, and could walk through the alleys several times a week, touching figurines with the tip of a long nail. Her smile would be even sharper than claws when she'd catch the nerdy clerks and clients staring at her hair, her miniskirt, her everything. Boyd understood it, the need to be seen. After all, it's a lot of what had pushed him to ask for the bite, too.

Boyd was never jealous of the attention Erica would get here and elsewhere. After all, she always made a point to publicly claim him, in the end. He'd share her spotlight, offer a smirk of his own, and would take her home.

For a long time, Boyd avoided everything that reminded him or Erica. It hurt too much. They were so new, with the potential of so much more, when she was stolen from him. After her death, he withdrew from any interactions that weren't friendship and family. His focus was on helping Derek, Isaac and Scott the best he could to keep the pack safe. His heart wasn't his to give anymore, or so he thought.

As cliché as it sounds, time has dulled the pain. It also refocused the joys, and Boyd sometimes mourns the fact that Erica's smile is now out of focus in his mind. She's nostalgia instead of a kick in the gut these days. All around him, life moved on. They survived the Alpha pack, the Nogistsune, werejaguar!Kate and the Benefactor and so on and so forth.

Couples formed inside the pack and then broke, before being rearranged in new configurations. Scott is with Lydia, now, as improbable as it would have sounded in sophomore year. Allison is with Isaac still, and Malia ended up with Liam. Derek and Stiles have been circling each other for years, but are too stubborn to give in. Incredibly, they all still get along and are happy for the others. Must be magic.

Boyd felt content being single, with an occasional anonymous hook-up when the need for skin got too strong. Never, in the last five years, did he long for the intimacy of a romantic relationship. Up until now, it seems, because here in the comic book store Erica loved so much, he feels his heart swell. It's all for Kira, who is going through the used comics bin as if it's a treasure chest. Her face lights up when she finds a title she was looking for. She immediately turns to him, clutching the comic to her chest, and mouths an enthusiastic 'yes!'. Boyd feels his disused heart speed up and can't help but grin in return, giving her a thumb up.

Kira is a beautiful woman, hasn't changed much since they've met. He wonders if she'll live to be nine hundred years old like her mother, or if having a human father has changed the odds. If there is someone who would deserve to live that long, it's Kira. She's the pack's darling, how could she not be, caring for everyone and with such a nice bubbly personality. Scott and her broke up amicably when they left for different colleges, but now she's back, for the summer and maybe more.

Boyd really, really hopes it's for more.

She deposits her bounty on the counter and goes back into the bin, almost folded in two to reach the comics at the bottom. Boyd is a bit distracted by her nice ass, though he can't help but notice another girl who is moving sideways along the counter. She's throwing glances at Kira and the comic, and wow, she plans on taking it, it's so obvious. Using a hint of supernatural speed, Boyd leaves the column he was leaning and slams his hand hard on the cover of the comic. The girl's fingertip were almost touching it and she jumps back, blue eyes wide. They get even wider when she sees just who stopped her little robbery.

"It's hers and you know it," he says, even quieter than normal. He knows it scares the bejesus of people more than if he'd yell.

Kira, who also startled when he hit the counter, has no idea what is going on.

"Wait, what?"

The wannabe-thief has an uneasy smile. "Sorry, I was sure it was there for sale."

"Yeah, right," Boyd says, giving a tight smile. The lie is confirmed in hear heartbeat.

He picks up the comic and pointedly gives it to Kira. She takes a look at it and beams some more.

"I'm so happy, I didn't have this one!" she says, smiling at the other girl. "I love Deadpool."

Disarmed by her candor, the girl nods and starts walking backward.

"Yes, it's great. Enjoy."

She throws a last look at Boyd and she's gone, hurrying to turn the corner to go in another alley.

"She tried to steal it from you," Boyd tells Kira.

That makes her gape, which is adorable. "Really? Oh."

She then smiles at him, wide and happy. "Thanks, I really want this one."

"I can see that," he says, smiling back. "Did you find something else?"

Kira looks at the bin, pouts a little.

"No, nothing as interesting. Though I still have to go through a little stack in the back. Am I taking too long?" she asks, looking worried. "We can go if you want. I'll be happy with that one."

Boyd shrugs. "I don't mind, take your time."

He really, really doesn’t. In this particular comic store, too. It's indeed an epiphany day.

"Aww, thanks, you're the best!" Kira says, spontaneously throwing her arms around his neck to give him a smacking kiss on the cheek.

By reflex Boyd circles her waist with his arm. He holds her close for a moment that turns into two when he freezes at how perfectly she fits against him. Kira blinks, her smile dimming and Boyd thinks he royally fucked up. But then Kira's grin widens again, huge this time. There's no mistaking the appearance of joy and arousal in her scent, and that throws Boyd for a very pleasant loop. Nonetheless he lets her go, tries to find his voice back.

"It's nothing," he says.

What he means is that he'd do way more than that for her. That making her happy, if he had that chance, would make him a better person.

There is understanding in Kira's eyes, like there often is. Once more Boyd wonders if kitsunes can do a little mind reading - or mood reading.

"Can you hold it for me? While I go through the last ones?" she asks, giving him the comic.

"Sure," Boyd says. "I'll keep it safe."

She smiles once more, all knowing.

"I know."

She turns to the bin, but then spins right around again, going on her tippy toes to give him a light kiss on the lips. The contact leaves him tingling, light headed even.

"Thank you," she says, and he thinks he can see a light blush on her cheeks. Her heart is definitely racing to match his own.

"My pleasure," he replies. Since she was the brave one, he bends down to kiss her lightly too. "Anytime."

He's pretty sure they have matching goofy smiles, now, and he's fine with that.

Boyd's convinced that Erica would approve, too.
