my writing in 2014

Jan 03, 2015 18:08

I decided to do like last year, so a list of all of my 2014 fics, for archival purposes (I STILL need to eventually recode my LJ/DW master fic list to incorporate 2013 and probably 2012, jeez…) and then a writing meme

My fics published on AO3 in 2014:

Suddenly you're standing still, Stiles/Derek, ~7 700 words, NC-17, ( A long time ago, Stiles promised his mom that he'd never cross the Hale property lines. He has kept his word even if there hasn't been a Hale in Beacon Hills for years, not since the fire. But suddenly Scott gets turned into a werewolf, Derek Hale is back, and Stiles has to share his biggest secret. (AU set in S1+ where Stiles is a born werefox)) , made for twreversebang, from art by solarbaby614

Always hitting it off, , Stiles/Derek, ~4 500 words, NC-17, ( Stiles has been on Derek's mind a lot since this years' Beacon Hills High contingent arrived in town to start college. For sure the obscene gesture Stiles makes while talking with Scott, implying he jerks off a lot, doesn't help that situation one bit. (College AU, see notes for details)), written for my beacon_hills Big Bang

Sweet Home Beacon Hills, Stiles/Derek, ~22 700 words, NC-17, AU, ( Stiles left Derek, the pack and Beacon Hills behind when he moved to Boston six years ago and never looked back. Until his girlfriend Kelly proposes to him, that is. It forces Stiles to go back to Beacon Hills in order to sort out his past, but he soon realizes that life and feelings are more complicated than that.), written for reel_wolves, and based on the movie "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002)

An exercise in self-discipline, Stiles/Derek, ~16 000 words, NC-17, (Roughly translated, the five Tenets of Taekwondo are courtesy, integrity, patience, self-discipline, and invincibility. Derek, who is a senior Taekwondo instructor in the family business, starts having trouble upholding several of those when Sheriff Stilinski and his jailbait son, who hits on him at every occasion, register for classes.), written for beacon_hills/
trope_bingo

Cut my feelings to the bone, SGA, John/Rodney, ~14 200 words, PG-13, (They're back in Pegasus, once again intrepid space explorers, and John couldn't be happier (the hopeless pining after Rodney is fine, he's used to it). Unfortunately there's a catch: Atlantis starts acting up.), made for hyx_sydin through sga_santa

that last one is dated as January 1st 2015 on AO3, but it was originally published on LJ @ sga_santa, in two parts: here (1) and here (2) so I am counting it in 2014

According to the AO3 stat counter, right now, for those 5 fics published in 2014:

Kudos: 2 851
Comment Threads: 78
Bookmarks: 864
Word Count: 64 996
Hits: 46 859

I'm surprised that with about half the output in words/fic, the rest of the stats are roughly similar to 2013…

Other ficlets written for Beacon Hills (total: 4 435 words)

Two untitled ficlets, where we had to do crossovers with characters from Teen Wolf meeting a character portrayed by the same actor in another shows, 754 words total, Gen, (Derek Hale from Teen Wolf meets Michael Sullivan Junior from Road to Perdition, and Melissa from Teen Wolf meets Donna Robbins from Chicago Fire ), written for beacon_hills

An untitled crack ficlet, Keeping the surprise! The reveal of the pairing is half the fun ;), 495 words total, Gen, (A tale of forbidden love), written for beacon_hills

Fill for the superhero challenge, Danny Mahealani, 791 words, Gen, (what if Danny had a superpower? Indirect meta ;) ), made for beacon_hills

Untitled Cora fic (Before the vault), 2 395 words, Gen (we had to write a short story for a missing scene or a filler scene - something that happened off screen - and I chose to write about Cora, before Derek finds her in the vault), made for beacon_hills

That done, here are the questions/answers for the meme on said writing

The End Of The Year writing meme

Total number of fics: 5 on AO3 (and 5 other ficlets/drabbles)

Total word count: 69 431 published words… which surprises me since it's 190 a day, and I wrote almost nothing at all for 6 months! I did write a minimum of 300 words a day starting September 1st, but not all of it is out there. I have 3 stories almost finished that are in the WIP folder where 1 is ready to edit and I should send to beta (almost 16K total for the 3), and another I'm working on right now that had 4,3K words on December 31st. so I wrote more than it seems, which is good :)

Total number of fandoms: Technically it's 5, with one SGA story (my 1st in 3 years!) but the rest is overwhelmingly Teen Wolf including a small crossover with Road to Perdition and one with Chicago Fire. I say 5 because in the WIP there's a MCU Steve/Tony story… a sequel of an old fic in fact. But I'm stuck, so it's not out there :)

My favorite story of mine this year: Funny, I'll go with a ficlet that I never even published on AO3 (I'm not sure it feels complete?), being my Untitled Cora fic (Before the vault). I loved writing this Cora, I felt like I found a voice for her.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Totally my fault because I never published it out of my LJ, but I'd go with the above, my Untitled Cora fic (Before the vault). I'm not even sure 5 people read it. But even on AO3, I am not sure there would be a public for it. Totally fine, though. I liked it.

Most fun story: I made myself laugh with the idea of an untitled crack ficlet for Beacon_Hills. Writing it also unblocked me after longs months or writing nothing at all, and it felt good.

Most sexy story: It's been a pretty tame year in the PWP department, but after some consideration, I'd go with An exercise in self-discipline. It has a long and involved sex scene I like. And lots of teasing.

Story with the single sweetest moment: I had a very, very clear image of a sleeping wolf!Derek curled around an injured fox!Stiles in Suddenly you're standing still. Derek also brought him a squirrel. Very Disney. I'd go with that.

Most unintentionally *telling* story: I'm not sure any fic applies here? But if we take it as including real life experience in a fic, I wrote An exercise in self-discipline, particularly the scene with the ropes, thinking about my karate teacher when I was 12-14. I had such a crush on him.*daydreams*

Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I'm not sure that happened this year. But I did manage to write Cora a way I like in Untitled Cora fic (Before the vault). Oh and Erica in that one too.

Biggest disappointment: Hard to say… I wasn't disappointed in anything in particular. I wish I hadn't dropped the ball in a 6 months dry spell, and I should kick my own ass and finish those 3 stories that I have in the WIP folder, but that's about it.

Biggest surprise: I am speechless about the success of Suddenly you're standing still. I mean… it's in my opinion nothing special and it has over 1 300 kudos? I'm really happy it was well liked, though! People love fox!Stiles, that's my only explanation ;)

Hardest story to write: Can I cheat and say writing anything at all between April and September? Because that was not happening. Also I was nervous about writing SGA again, but it really helped when I got a request that was tailor-made for me. So maybe that story? But only because I worried about having the voices right and since at one point I had to outline the fic a second time because I felt I was getting lost meandering in it (I wanted a slow build in relation to a plot point). So Cut my feelings to the bone, but it was also easy to write in the way that SGA came back to me like putting on old slippers :)

Easiest story to write: Again I'd say the Untitled Cora fic (Before the vault). She just spoke to me. Unfortunately, at one point she stopped. So even though what is out there is probably what was the easiest to write all year, at the same time completing the story could have been put in the impossible column, and it explains why it's not on AO3. It could be a challenge for 2015, maybe?

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most: If I don't write for challenges, I don't write at all? That was pretty clear! I have proof in my WIP folder, because I only finish shit when I am obligated, it seems. It's a curse. As for what I like in my stories, once more I wrote a whole lot of pining, because that's how I roll. Also several AUs because apart from the SGA fic, none of it is canon-compliant. Quite a bit of banter. What fic demonstrate it the most? Well I don't know, most of them. I'll go with my Sweet Home Alabama inspired story, then, Sweet Home Beacon Hills, because I haven't used it in the meme yet and I liked it. It also gave me some of the most exuberant and enthusiastic responses ever (on tumblr and on twitter even!), but also people who criticized it for the ending (that I took from the movie itself! I know it's not realistic! Lol!)

Even if I didn't write for half the year, I'm pretty satisfied. I am happy I started the 300 words every day thing with a spreadsheet and everything in September, though I could do better with actually finishing stuff. Teen Wolf still has me, but dipping back in SGA was fun. Who knows, with the proper inspiration I could do it again! No new fandom grabbed me, but who knows what 2015 has in store!
